MMO's people are quitting to play Darkfall -results

chryseschryses Member UncommonPosts: 1,453

Below is a poll I found on the Darkfall website asking which MMO's gamers are quitting to play Darkfall.  I found it interesting as I expected more from AoC and EVE.  The two obvious ones are WoW and WAR.  However I think one has to take into account the population difference as well.  e.g. 124 people from WoW is probably less of an issue than 137 leaving WAR.  Even though I am not a fan of WAR its a little worrying that the game has been out for 3 months and its leading the poll (for specific game).  EVE is still staying strong and is pretty resistant against all these major launches.

By the way don't flame too much because I just cut and pasted the numbers, I didn't run the poll or anything.

Game                                      Players    %

World of Warcraft                    124    18.18%

EVE Online                               40    5.87%

Age of Conan                             46    6.74%

Warhammer                             137    20.09%

Everquest 2                                10    1.47%

Lord of the Rings Online          9   1.32%

Final Fantasy XI                         3      0.44%

Other pay-to-play MMO           70    10.26%

Free-to-play MMO                    72    10.56%

A non-MMO game                   171   25.07%

After DF launches, the next poll should be:  Will you be going back to your old MMO?

Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.

Those same dumbasses who are leaving WAR are the ones who think games are perfect at launch. They're hype junkies and end up disappointing themselves. They should try DF for 3 months too, see how fast they get sick of it, then come back to WAR when it's more polished. That might appease them...

    These polls are funny though.

I have to agree with you on this one Bruticus.  I always say the test of a good MMO is 3 months and 6 months.  If they don't sort it by 6 months then its RIP like Tabula Rasa.

As an after thought I was thinking what these numbers would equate to if DF had 100k subs.

Gamers leaving if 100k subs are taken up.

    World of Warcraft 124 18.18%            = 18,800

    EVE Online 40 5.87%                           = 5,870

    Age of Conan 46 6.74%                       = 6,740

    Warhammer 137 20.09%                     = 20,090

    Everquest 2 10 1.47%                           = 1470

Lord of the Rings Online 9 1.32%      = 1320 (very impressive resistance)

    Final Fantasy XI 3 0.44%                      = 440

    Other pay-to-play MMO 70 10.26%

    Free-to-play MMO 72 10.56%

    A non-MMO game 171 25.07%

Now this is based on some poll on the DF website but its interesting numbers if the population goes this way.  I still have a lot to do in AoC and in a pretty active guild so if DF sucks at launch I am happy to wait and see what they have at 3 months.

If DF is a wild success like some believe I have a feeling it will destroy WAR. I don't think Mythic is worrying too much though.

I left WAR because it was boring, not because I thought it was unpolished. There is only so much I can take of mass zerg vs zerg RvR. There isn't anything else to do in WAR.

I'll try out Darkfall and if it's good, then I'll see how long it lasts. There should be enough to do to keep my interest.

I'm not playing any mmo right now because of darkfall, even though I'm still a bit sceptic, if its not coming oh well, I probably wait for Aion or play AoC, or see how chronicles of spellborn do at us/uk release.

Never quit a game you like to go play some other game, even if you think the other game might be better.  Often it will mean quitting a game for a game that you don't like as much.  Even if the other game is better, it will still be there when you're done with the first game (or if it isn't, then it would have shut down while you played it if you liked it and went to play it immediately), and more polished by then, too.  Only quit a game because you want to quit that particular game.

These polls are pretty uselles, because if game comes out in perfect condition (i think game was pretty finished 3 years ago by words of creators, just saw some quotes so dont know for sure) with everything promised it will be match for WoW or any other game or even overthrow them, so many many people will leave games they play now. And other possibility that it will be piece of crap, and most players wont even come close.

Another thing is digital download (so far i heard it is only option to get game), so lets say 10gigs of space for minimum, for many people it will takes days to download such thing. So in that time we will be able to read other people reviews and if it is failure we just wont bother to try. Also there is no preorder so players wont quit games they play now just to wait 1 month (my guess).

In my eye it will be Epic success or failure.

Blameing the consumer for not wanting a product?  You would do great in business!!!  If a unicorn vomitted on WAR it wouldn't be enough polish.  That game had all of the resources and the knowledge it needed to be good, and it still sucked.  People didn't quit because they are whiney, they quit because it wasn't fun ^_^

You may like the game, thats special for you.  Not every game sucks at realease.  Only games made in 2007-8

And soon 2009/2010 and guess what wont change much in 2011/2012 :)

What people dont realize all the games are close to perfect before release ..
every freaking game is the next hit, the next wow killer etc..

Imo fans will destroy DF its nothing worse for game then over hyped fans who instantly become trolls after the game is not what they expected.

Its easy to over hype a game AoC did it with all real time combat, war did it with all those videos and DF is doing it with future list that looks like people discussed well what would be nice to have in MMO and then just put everything in.

Yea Hype is nice for publisher/developer its nice to sell 1m+ copies bud to bad that in that after 1st month 30% of those will quit and out of 30% -> 10% will become pure haters that will just post and post about how bad xx game is.

I can tell you now even if DF is released in perfect state forums will be filled with haters.

p.s. Xiliaro my WoW manuals from 2004 have a dedicated part about battle grounds not to mention they said player housing will be released within 1st few months after release .. well the 1st part they did deliver after quite long time and 2nd maybe in next 2 years.

Nope, Mr. Troll. Actually, noone had to do it, but if you feel you're more accepted and cool now, I won't stop you :)

So far DF is so abstract that it can be categorized as a wet-dream-MMO concept, meaning MMO players from around the world (not devs, actually) see DF as a perfect mixture of everything good from every MMO that has been released since UO. One can be easily skeptical, but then again one can be easily naive, such as myself, and hope to get away from heme-park (read: linear) MMOs once and for all.

I still play WAR once in a while. My last two years in WOW was playing in BG`s and only BG`s. I didn`t even leave the city to take a look at the new land Blizz created. I quit WOW when WAR came out because I thought the game would be a massive Alterac Vally. Not that I liked AV, but outdoor PvP is were the fun is.

I don`t remember how long WAR has been out, but it`s a pain to LV up as a runepriest. All I do in WAR is those scenarios and a zerg vs zerg when that happens. I`m LV 30 atm, but I will never see the magic number 40 before DF is out. Why? because the game is boring. I`m in a big guild, but I can`t understand the point of taking those castles, it`s lost after a few hours anyway. Sure I can get a golden bag when we take the caste, but the fighting is really boring. I even liked the PvP in WOW better because it took a bit more skill to be good.

I will do my part to support WAR, because atleast they tried to make a pvp mmo. If DF fail, I give up mmo`s for a while.

Wow, considering the amount of WoW haters (pretty much everyone who posts) on those forums, it's surprising that almost 20% are subscribed to the very game they claim to hate.

This is a perfect chance to call their bullshit for any of you willing, I would but my account got banned for a week because I said that the forum community was being blind-faith fanboys (which they are...)

Well to be fair you don't know any of that 20% are the haters. I mean it's only 124 people.

That's an amazingly small sample of people, polls on the WAR fan forums and the AOC pre-release forums had responses in the 10's of thousands...

Interpreting the numbers further they suggest:

    Winners:

EVE Online, LotR.  Fan base seems pretty secure and not bothered by DF

    Losers:

WAR - in a big way since it just launched and they should be worried about a large part of their population looking to move, even if DF fails they need to change something quick.

WoW - not really a loser since 10k subs wont make much of a difference to them but sheer numbers will ride this out.

AoC - Percentage is low but for someone who has been playing since launch I can see AoC becoming a very solid title or failing badly in 2009.  Right now I would err on the side of solid title based on improvements.

    New or waiting MMO gamers

2008 is probably going to go down as the year of hype.  It shows in the number of players playing a non MMO game and wanting to join DF.  I imagine the majority are MMO fans who tried the big titles this year and went to PS3, Fallout, CoD because they were so pissed.  Now waiting to come back for a 'promising' title.

    Note:

I know surveys like this are not quantitative or scientific but what I find interesting about it is it was on the DF website.  Therefore it shows that there are a lot of people from WoW, WAR and non MMO's actually reading their forums and voting on polls like this.  This in itself says a lot.

    Game Players %

    World of Warcraft 124 18.18%

    EVE Online 40 5.87%

    Age of Conan 46 6.74%

    Warhammer 137 20.09%

Very silly poll. Far many more people who are interested in Darkfall visit the site than people who look at it completely objective. So basically all this polls is how many people who were already interested in Darkfall in varying degrees from somewhat to fanboi will leave their current MMO.

Praetoriani that is the whole point... It is people who are interested in Darkfall and looking to leave their 'current' MMO.  Which is listed in the poll.

I want an option for "I came to the site to see if the game looked like it could be good, but it doesn't, so I'm not going to quit a game to play it".

I also want an option for "I don't quit one game to play another, because the other might not be as good as I hoped".

And I definitely want an option for "I'll wait until a lot of people have played the game and can say something meaningful about how good it actually is before I decide".

And most importantly, I want an option for "I like to choose several mutually contradictory poll options".
