In your opinion...

You've played MMORPGs with choosable races, but is there a certain race you think is really good yet really under-used? I'm not talking about "OGM ELFS R UNDREUSD IWNAT OT PLAY ELFS RFOL", I'm talking about races that are hardly/never used in ORPGs.

One of my dream races for MMOs are winged people. Not birdmen but humans with wings. I would love to see this race in a game done well. But they would have to be able to fly also. Dragons are another cool playable race that I wouldn't mind seeing outside of Horizons, however, I do like the whole group quest to slay the dragon as high level content so it might be tough to implement well.

    Underused races?

I would have to say vampires, Werewolves and Goblins.

I really do love the idea of a vampire Vs Werewolves MMORPG or one made off of the vampire the masquerade series.

You never see Goblins as a playable race. I really don't think there is a consensus on what Goblins should look like and nobody wants to be the first to set the standard. I personally like the way they were portrayed in the original animated film of "THE HOBBIT". They were large and strong and gruesome to behold. Not like the skinny little goblins we see in most fantasy MMOS these days.

Most of you are probably too young to have seen the original Hobbit movie. Sorry for being old.

Vampires & Werewolves are definitely. Although vampires especially are more needed in a PvP setting. Using them in a PvE base game would take alot of the joy out of it.

Oh, and the "Goblins" in the Hobbit. Were just another name for orcs.

Vampires and werewolfs are not really a race. Its more of an affliction, or a curse. What would be neet, is if your character could turn into one (be created via a quest or a bad fight with one).

Yes I know what tolkien lore says about Goblins.....

On the other hand though it was obvious that there was little relation between the 2 when the hobbit was written. There was large debate as to whether Orcs were just a offshoot of the goblins. As I see it though it has little bearing now seeing as MMO's like EQ have seperated them into 2 different monsters and have given them completely different appearances.

I would like to see Goblins as the larger more fierce of the 2 races myself.

Well...I can't remember. But i'm pretty sure it didn't mention "orcs" in the hobbit. Although it did mention Goblins I believe in LoTR, and usually made a strong bearing that they were almost identical to orcs.

I don't see much point in using almost the exact same formula and change the name from Orc to Goblin. I think its fine now. Unless drastic changes to goblins were made that were not very similar to orcs.

Goblins are a very good race to have in a ORPG. I've been wanting one with them to come out for ages.

I'd really like to see some new types of races, Lizardmen, Catmen. What especially turns me on is races that have to use special equipment or have equipment that they can't use. I'd love to play as a Shadow person. Or a Lich of somekind.
I did see that animated hobbit movie when I was younger. I really enjoyed it and believe that it is the cornerstone of why I got into fantasy.

I would just about -die- to have a World of Darkness based MMORPG! I've been a devout player of WoD for almost 10 years now, before I found EQ

*ducks head looking guilty* Then I sorta forgot about WoD hehehe... but yes I would -love- to see a WoD mmorpg, that would be the supreme perfection in my opinion. ::::40::

The only way that would work is it being totally Open PVP (Vampires (Camarilla Vs Sabbat Vs Independent) Vs Werewolves (Garou Vs Wyrm) Vs Hunters Vs (God only knows what else)

Also, there would have to be a day/night cycle so Vampires would have to stick to the underground or buildings during the day

    Actually Flem they did.

I remember watching all of the original animated LOTR movies when I was a kid. They had something to do with Ralph Bakshi if I remember right. I believe he is the same guy responsible for the movie wizards.

Ever since i can remember ive never seen a game where it could be possible to play them. I know it looks like weird idea to roleplay a walking tree, but I personaly like nature, gaian teories and so.. i would love to see them in the game !

Rar. Thats the only way that I'd -ever- be involved in PvP. Actually they could make some mobs to crunch... use like... insane asylums for zones to level in for example... people that most of the world cares nothing about. Government dungeons and science labs with government dudes who're trying to do wicked nasty experiments on vampires werewolves... so on, so forth... there are ways if one gets creative ;-)

Though true... PvP would/could be a big part of the whole deal. Or heck... there are pleanty of races and stats in the cam... make the Sabbat into mobs to kill... perhapse mages too... who knows... like I said... there are ways and ways hehe. It could be done without strictly being pvp! :-)

Pixies, Buteons, Trolls, Sidhe, Merfolk, Elementals, Sylphs & many, many more, but none that I would want to play.

p.s. I usually stick to the smaller races like Gnomes or sentient rodents. heh.

I'd agree with goblins. I thought the Velious-type goblins in EQ would have made awesome pc's for roleplaying. We'll have to see what they look like in II. Ditto the spider-folk around LOIO, I can't remember what they were called.

Ah yes, I don't remember exactly what they were called either, but they are pretty much driders from DnD. Half spider half dark elf (in DnD). I think that would be a neat playable as well.

Surprising no one mention Centaur. Although that whole "sleep standing up" thing would kinda suck. By the way, I thought orcs were, by definition, a sort of pig-man creature or something to that effect. At least they've been portraid as such enough. Ah but I'm no expert and am probably wrong anyway. I just calls'em like I sees'em.

OOOO Centaur! I've always loved playing Centaurs in text games why did I never think of that!? That would be just too cool. Please make a game with Centaurs someone! I'd love that! :-)

    Centaurs are in Shadowbane.

And Vampires will be in the next exp.

    :)

but yah you said underused, once isn't enough!

Be nice to be any race you get to fight in the game, that is a sentient race that is.

I don't if anyone here plays/played Realms of Kaos, but they came out with a "Play a Monster" feature that slowly let you work your way up playing different NPCs. So, basically you got to play almost any race in the game. There were limitations of course, but it was a great concept in my opinion.
