EQ2, Lotro or WoW?

I have taken a six-month break from MMORPG's and now I have decided that I'm ready to start back up again! So far, I've narrowed it down to EQ2, Lotro and WoW.  I just can't seem to decide which one will be best based on population and game content put together. All suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I wouldn't play any of those three, to be honest.

Wait a few more months, trust me.  Better things(hopefully better) will be out for you to pick from and compare to these three.

What are some of the main features your looking for? This would help us help you :)

I would say WoW but that's a personal pref. I would also say Guild Wars, but that wasn't a option.

What mmo's are you exactly referring to?

In mmo's I mainly look for a game with a large world and a lot of quests and exploring content. I'm not big on pvp, but mainly because I haven't been exposed to much of it.

All three would be good for you then. Although LOTR sounds like possibly the best option.

The biggest population? WoW hands down. You can't argue that.

Most content? That's more a challenger, I actually can't comment being it matters what you really consider about each one.

I would say EQII, because it's an awesome game. But with RMTs and so few players, I'm not playing it. Second best choice? LOTRO. Which is where I am now. Great community, plenty of players. Just not the amount of jerks WoW has nor, at least what I find, boring and shallow gameplay. I suggest trialing each one then buying. I can get you a LOTRO trial key if you want one.

If population and content are your main concerns then I'd go WoW.......EQ2 and loTRO are both WoWclones anyway....EQ2 used to be a little more hardcore but SOE changed the game when they saw WOWs success......I played all 3 games and lasted a little over a year in WOW, about 5 months in EQ2 and a little over a month in LoTRO before boredom set in.......LoTRO feels too much like WOW but with LOTRO lore........EQ2 is OK but if you played EQ1 it falls way short.......

It isn't exactly that population is my main concern, it's that there are enough players to group and guild with. The last time I was on EQ2 the population didn't seem so hot. I did absolutely love the content in EQ2, but in my opinion that game was best at release. Thanks for all the comments!

Just refering to the ones coming out soon in general(Darkfall, Aion, etc).  I have no favoritism or dislike towards any of them, and will not judge them until they are released.  If they're not better than the current, then he can make a choice again from what he wants and feel doubly satisfied.

And since some of them are due out fairly soon, it might be best to wait a bit and then evaluate the choices.

If he has to choose from these three with no exceptions, then I would honestly say LOTRO, but I'm not happy with that answer.

    lotro

  • sevitothsevitoth Member UncommonPosts: 375

I would go LOTRO or WOW.

The lower level zones in EQ2 are pretty much empty, which isn't much fun for a new player.

If you don't care for pvp and are looking for a large world to explore, then LOTRO would probably be your best bet.

6 month break and you havent played any of those older games?

I'd wait for Darkfall.  It will be a culmonation of anything available with a greater degree of freedom and sense of immersion from a vastly larger player-driven environment, I'd think.

WOW - very fun (if you never played it before) superb gameplay , huge community

LOTRO - most like good old PC RPGS , great graphic , friendliest community , best quests

EQ2 - largest (if you get all expansions) , empty on players , sony

You can not go wrong with first two

As an aside, I'd try Runes of Magic http://www.runesofmagic.com/us/index.html

Your getting anything and everything you would now out of EQ2, Lotro and WoW and you're getting it for free since it is in beta, though a fairly complete beta stage.

My feeling is that you or anyone speding time funding the other afformentioned games now is throwing money away since this is available.

I'd wait for Darkfall if I was planning on taking another 6 month break, otherwise...

It really depends on what you're looking for, since all three are fairly different.

WoW- Simplistic, standard gear grind progression, if you're into raiding and only care about gathering gear, why not.

EQ2- Was holding on a bit until the station cash announcement, now, assuming you want to deal with station cash, you're going to be hard pressed to find people with people bailing out from Sony's latest mistake. Has more depth than WoW, but with the population decline, starting out is going to be difficult.

LoTRO- Likely the best storytelling in an MMO to date, but unless you're at least a minor fan of Tolkien's work, or are looking for a game without an emphesis on purely gear grinding, it likely won't grab you. The population is still doing surprisingly well however.

As for "waiting because much better things are coming" I disagree. The only half decent thing on the horizon is Aion. There's TCoS as well, but it's looking less and less likely Activison will ever release it in the US/UK. Aion, while interesting, won't play terribly differently from currently available titles, but if you're specifically looking for RvR, I would suggest it over WoWs excuse for PvP or WARs broken system.

Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

Out of the three the most that I have played is EQ2, which I got up to level 70 then quit because I got very busy. It sounds like Lotro is the best choice though. Darkfall looks very cool, except I can't seem to find when it will be released in the US.

LOTRO is an outstanding game, in my opinion, as fas as a PvE-centric game.  I think it has the highest quality overall PvE experience there is in any MMO currently available.  Additionally, the population is good and the community is oustanding.

If you were looking for a more PvP experience, it wouldn't be the best choice, but for PvE and a great community, LOTRO is definitely a great choice.

    Play lotro

It has superior Quests and pve stuff in general and If you never tried pvp atleast monster play is fun to mess with to get your feet wet.

Lotro's content is much more accessible then WoWs and If you liked EQ2 at all I would go Lotro since the art style feels similar.

    Playing: Nothing

    Looking forward to: Nothing

Either WoW or LOTRO would suit you well.   Both of those games are 'growing' in terms of developement and populations.  I really like both of these games for what they offer.  Aside from WoW having better PvP, both games play very much alike and have solid game developer philosphy behind them.  You should be able to find plenty of people to play with at all levels.

EQ2 is a game that is on the decline in terms of populations and developement.  It is also the game most likely to undergo drastic over the top surprise changes that may adversely affect your gameplay.  It is also the game you would most likely spend more of your 6 months just trying to catch up to the rest of the population.

    Try Lotro.

Its NOT a WoW clone. It offers more then WoW does in many ways (not saying WoW sucks, just stating the facts).

Lotro has the best PvE in any game i have played. I am not the biggest Lotr fan, but i am still enjoying Lotro A LOT.  Actually by playing lotro i am beginning to enjoy the lotr lore a lot more now. The community is really helpful and the population is growing. Plus the Mines of Moria expansion is hands down the best expansion to any MMO that i have seen in a LONG time. You can expect a lot of content updates and support from Turbine too.

If you start playing Lotro,  make sure you give it time. The game is fun as soon as you start playing, but picks up a lot in the early 20's. Also make sure you do the Book quests, they are the main storyline quests in lotro. They are VERY well done.

This thread makes me wanna reinstall LOTRO. Just a pity the class/race combinations are so limited, thats what drove me away from it. It felt too stock standard. Now with 2 more classes, and what look to be interesting classes (especially the warden) I might have to try it again. I also like the legendary weapons crafting idea.

Regarding Darkfall. Its a PvP centric game from what I can gather. If your not familiar with PvP, and particularly Darkfalls FFA system...you could find yourself kicking it to the curb pretty quick. Personally im looking forward to it.

WoW is the top game of the three, so that would be my first choice.  The new expansion is excellent too.  WoW is the highest quality game, and has the most variety of things to do at endgame, which is imporant in todays mmo's.

LOTRO would be my second choice... I consider it the second best MMO on the market.  LOTRO is great but has very limited endgame and replayability.  It also uses way too much instancing.

EQ2 has some things going for it (I myself have returned more then once) but at this point its pretty much a dead world.... most of the action is at max level.  Graphics are also looking pretty dated.

    Enjoy!!!
