Ok Im going to buy a new PC (at last...)
With the following specs:
Pentium 4 (2.8GHz)
120 GB HD
256kbps DSL
And the question is.......what should I do?
Buy 1 gig RAM and a GeForce FX 5200
or
Buy 512 RAM and a Radeon 9600 (256 MB)
Comments
I think RAM would help the most.
But I've not even been in the Beta, so maybe a tester could answer.
RAM all the way
radeon 9600 is not that uber, it's ok, especially the 256mb. But the ram will overall give you more solid performance.
not from eq2 perspective, i have no idea, i'm not in beta. but this is my experience from other games. i have a 9600 pro 128mb. 1 gig ram pc3200 vs 648mb or something (512 + 128) pc2100,. big differnce
RAM, with SWG it made a huge difference.
On the beta on EQ2, I changed my 128mb for a brand new 256mb graphics card and it had little effect.
Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve
def. the ram!
I benchmarked the 5200 card and the speed was almost the same as my 4600..little difference at all

2. if i were to get an Uber card what should it be?? 6800gt or x800pro (still leaning towards the 6800gt)
it would b great to have some good opinions
Ps i dont really care if it takes longer to zone as long as my graphics r way awesome

That's for you to decide.
1 gig of RAM with a decent video card means:
+ NO LAG!!!
+ Loading time will be so much faster
+ You could actually play EQ2 and have WinAMP loaded in the background playing music.
- Unfortunatly you could not raise the graphics very high.
- Plants and grass will have to be turned off when walking around the plains
- Shadows and anti-aliasing all disabled
- You might even have to lower the textures level
Conclusion: Better gameplay, graphics end up looking bad
512 megs of RAM with a good video card means:
+ 1024x768 Resolution with all graphic settings over Medium, maybe even at High!
+ Shadows & Anti-aliasing, baby!!!!!
- Lag
- More lag
- Did I already mention lag? Oh yeah I did.
Conclusion: You could reduce lag by decreasing the graphics, but that would defy the whole purpose of owning a kick @ss video card!
Conclusion of thread: Get 1 gig of RAM, worry about the video card later. OKay so a FX5200 is kinda crappy, but hey, live without the Shadows and anti-aliasing for now... just play the game without lag and when you can afford a better video card, get it. And hey, believe me, I work for a Computer Store, the more you wait, the better video cards will get! Heck I can't wait for Geforce FX 6800GT to be less than 500$ then I'm buying it!

I was one of the silly people who went a got a 5950 a week before the 6800 came out....ugh...anyways..check these specs and see....think it can handle everything faily well with just a ram boost to 1gig more?
AMD 64 2.0 GHz
512 ram...basic stuff...
FX 5950 Ultra 256
2x 30 gig hds
I put alot into some parts but....with a trade in I could get the 6800 or the gig of good ram for about the same price...which should it be?
"thanks i think the GT is $399 and the Ultra is $499. would it really lag that much??? oh i have a 2.26gtz P4 (non HT) do you think that would help? and would it b better to have 2X512 or 1X1024 sticks ???"
----2 matched 512's. The difference from 1024MB RAM and 768MB, was very noticeable to me. I am using PC3200 DDR btw. I don't think slower RAM will make much of a difference, however, don't quote me on that. When I used over 1GB of DDR EQ2 was silky smooth. As soon as I snatched a 256 stick out, my PC was choppy as the ram was loading constantly. I would most definitely suggest over 1GB before you even think about a video card. The one thing most people overlook while purchasing upgrades, is RAM. It won't matter how fast your video card is, if your constantly waiting on RAM. Your 5million dollar video card will seem like a 5$ bargain bin reject. As always, the more ram, the better. Oh yea, be careful what quality RAM you get, don't just buy the cheapest brand out there, unless of course, you live at the north pole.
Never say "OOPS!" always say "Ah, Interesting!"
Don't get excited about a tax cut. It's like a mugger giving you back fare for a taxi.
i went from a FX 5200 128 bit card to a 9800SE 256 bit card. the difference on the character creation is amazing for EQ2. i had 1gig of ram to start though. but the card was the problem for me.

"www.pricewatch.com" is a good web site to compare prices on computer parts.
The cheapest GT listed there, right now, is a "PNY Vertro GeForce 6800 GT 256MB" for $369.
