What is Runes of Magic?

theguru22theguru22 Member Posts: 52

I've played many, many MMORPGs, it having been my favorite genre of game before they all became worthless tripe, and I played ROM for approximately 10 minutes before realizing exactly what it is; the most shameless WoW-clone ever made ever... ever!

(Don't be fooled, I continued playing for at least 5 hours to confirm my suspicion)

For those who haven't played it, and those thick enough to have played it and not realize that it's a WoW-clone, I'll break it down; 1) The UI is exactly identical 2) The classes are warrior, knight(palidin), mage, scout(hunter), priest and are almost exactly identical to their WoW counterparts 3) Many of the spells and abilities are exactly identical to their WoW counterparts 4) That damnedable node harvesting and level grinding crafting system is readily prevalent, while a bit easier because you trip over nodes everywhere and they respawn before you can leave the scene 5) The leveling system is identical in that it allows no character customization at all because your attributes are automatically distributed 6) Even many of the enemies are shamelessly ripped from the WoW bestiary (although I haven't fought any cult members yet, but I'm sure there are some lurking right around the next corner) 7) The unnecessarily large and grusomly well polished main city makes a showstopping appearance 8) They even copied the fact that the Mage is rediculously overpowered and can kill sprawls of enemies with a flick of the wrist (they eventually fixed this in WoW but that was the case for some time).

There are only 2 noticable differences; 1) You can own a house (alright so this is kind of lame and gimicky even though your furnature grants you bonuses, but it's different and noticable) 2) You can change your class, and sort of multiclass. I say sort of multiclass because most of the multiclassing abilities are useless and a few multiclassing combinations are utterly futile. Beyond that multiclassing grants you a 10% bonus in stats, but the game is basically WoW's little sister in that it's piss easy and dying has hardly any consequence at all. In the end 10% better stats seems like a small tweak in the perfection of your "toon" (god I hate that word).

So, for being a free-to-play WoW clone it's actually ok since WoW is actually ok (for now) however a total waste of life. And that's exactly what Runes of Magic is.

WoW is the top MMO out in the market today and what's wrong if someone wants to copy it???

i've played WoW since beta and i was a hardcore players, and i just tried RoM a few days ago, i must say, they are doing a really good job. the game is very much like wow indeed and thats why i think they are doing a good job, 100k subs in the first day of OB is a really good thing for a F2P and i guess in the Market today if u cant compete with the major guy out there, why not copy him? WAR, AoC, and many others tried to compete and they all fail

    WoW-L60 Dwarf Hunter
    L70 Orc Shaman
    WAR-L23 Orc Blackorc

The death penalty means utterly nothing? You kidding? In WoW There is NOTHING that happens when you die. In RoM, you lose a good ammount of Training points and Xp that has to be regained. I died 3 times consecutively once and had a hell of a hard time gaining it all back. Dieing actually does sting a bit, there is no death penalty under level 10 which is most likely what your experience. pfft.

EDIT: I also wanted to add that in WoW you do actually lose some durabilitiy in your armor upon death I was wrong when saying "nothing" happens when you die. But they implemented losing durability upon death in RoM as well.

@Morpheu: Read the last two sentances. Also, as repeatedly posted on this website and others: Subscriptions != Quality. (that's do not equal)

@dcoleman07: I've played both and the interface, character design, gameplay, abilities, atmosphere, combat pacing, etc is FAR closer to WoW than Guildwars. You must be playing Guildwars.

@Slasher29: *Baffles* (please punctuate and make sense)

@tigris67: You're probably right. I did play beyond level 10 but I didn't notice much of a death penalty, but you're correct in that it's a slightly harder slap on the wrist than WoW.

I personally was reminded of 3 games when I played

altho WOW is borrowed from the most

    - WOW (interface, quest style, mail, auction house, cartoon look)

    - Guild Wars (dual class)

    - EQ2 (spell/skill upgrades, housing, can learn all gathering skills)

the gather skills are more like EQ2 -- cannot harvest lumber in WOW

Yes there's nothing wrong with this game being a lot like WoW. It does a good job of it and is really fun, and free and not being presumptious about it either. XD

WoW with a dual class system and player housing doesn't sound too bad to me.
