Who has the Biggest Area to explore and adventure in between WOW & EQ2

I dont recall seeing much about this really here so thought I'd ask. A big part of fun for me is exploring to find cool hidden areas. So the tie breaker for which game to decide for me might come down to this. Anyway, for those who know... what game has more areas to explore ?

    It is hard to tell...

I've tested both games, and from waht i've seen, WoW has got the larges area of exlporation. You can't compare the areas tho..EQ2 is run by a lot of instanced zones, and some of them is onlt accesable once. I doubt anyone can tell you the answer tho, because nobody has been at max level in both games and seen all areas of both games.

    EDIT:

For the dungeon part, i'm most impressed with EQ2. They were creepy, very very detailed and fun to play inside.

I only played the WoW stress test beta, but I noticed that a lot of the 'land' was inaccessible do to it just being forests or whatever.  Still the areas seemed pretty big.  It also seemed there were roads leading to everything, althought I don't know how much was outside of the obvious to explore.

In the eq2, once you get out of the cities, the areas are just massive and you are let loose to explore.  The first few days in the commonlands I kept getting lost and had to stop and wonder where the hell I was.  Pretty simple for me to find my way around  now though.  I guess I just fealt overwhelmed at the first huge area.

Hmm, so the dungeons for WoW are restricted by your toon's level ? I dont like that at all, reminds me of CoH. Part of the fun of exploring is going to places I probably shouldn't be at to begin with. Does EQ2 have the same limitation ?

Also, are these areas / dungeons immersive in the way you get to them ? In other words, does it feel like a separate place or more like I actually walked to them seemlessly. For example, in CoH the areas were separated into zones that felt like completely different areas. I couldnt walk in between them, I was transported via the tunnels. In SWG, I could walk from city to city which made a planet feel like a whole planet. Only when I left to visit another world did it feel like zoning.

Ok, this is my opinion of the size of WoW  having played 16+ days (in game). My view on it is from the WoW perspective, not played EQ 2 beta. I've got a lvl 58 Night elf druid on PvP server as my highest character.

WoW has 2 main continents with around 20 zones per Continent. Each zone takes about on average 10 minutes ride (Mounted 60%+ speed) from one side to the other (some zones can be crossed quicker, others slower.) Each zone has a theme and feel (forested, desert, mountains, snowey etc..) And content is arranged in each zone to match its theme. Each zone generally has small towns for players of each faction, 3-5 mini dungeons for Questing and Xping, 10-15 spawning camps or areas and 1 or 2 major geographical features with uncountable minor geographical features.

Links to Continent Maps to help visualise this are found here: -

Kalimdor continent, Major Zones and Flight Paths
    http://www.worldofwar.net/cartography/worldmap/kalimdorcont.php

Additionally, there are the major towns and cities, which take 5 or so minutes to run across. Each city has tons of content and unique areas to explore. There are 6 major cities.

Then there are the instanced dungeons which nooblet has detailed, there are about 13 of these live with another 4 high level ones being released next patch. Instances take about 2-3 hours to work through and I’ve been to most of them 3-4 times to complete the quests offered. It once took me 2 hours to do just 1 quest within one instance.

I’m also aware that there are portals throughout the game, which lead to unopened high level raid zones. There are 3 of these I’m aware off.

There are also PvP areas to be added.

Content wise I’ve played to almost cap, visited probably 70% of zones but only explored fully 10-12 of the potential 40. Visited only 4 major cities and feel comfortable (i.e won’t get lost) in only 2 cities In my 4 months on beta testing WoW.

So hope this “Overview” gives you a good idea of the amount of explorable game in WoW.Can some one in EQ2 beta qive us all an idea for EQ2, would help me get a feel for EQ2’s offering.

I belive that is the recomended level for the dungeons , your free to go in them at lvl 1 i belive. In EQ2 you only have acsess to X amount of zones until you do certain quests which opens them up for you and the quest might requires you to be X level in order to stand a chance at completeing it i think.

Yes, in WoW you are free to go where you like from lvl 1. There is no "zoning" unless moving into an instance or being portaled/traveling across from one continent to the next. Each zones lvl rateing is a guide to what lvl or creatures you will meet in these areas, as long as your good at running you can explore quite alot at low levels.

Interestingly you also get XP for exploring. At the start of a new character the world maps are all blank and as you stumble across new areas the maps roll-back and reveal the area. You get probably 2% of your level in XP for each "discovery" and there are 5-6 in each zone. Not alot but still nice.

Im in Eq2 beta and from lvl 1 - 10 u dont really even have to leave the city u start  off in. ( freeport - evil race / qeynos - friendly race)

I did go exploring out of qeynos and it is really open, u can run for miles basically ingame and explore all the wonderful landscape.  Brings me back to the good ole days of Eq when u got all excited about exploring the area for mobs and such.   The map in the city is real good, and when u leave the city u have a continent map but it really doesnt show u anything except u r here....no zoom in like inWoW.

I played WoW during the stess test and i believe WoW is faster paced and more user friendly game wise.

Eq2 is more of a challenge and for more hardcore gamers, but not so in the aspect you cant solo.

    Quest wise

Eq2 has lots of quests but they are not as easy to complete asfar as finding and knowing where to go like in WoW.

WoW - easy quests, fast lvling, pvp. lvl cap 60

Eq2 - Quests that take time and research, slower lvling, more exploration, more challenge. lvl cap 100

I'm NO fanboy Stephen. I've been very lucky to play WoW in beta for 4-5 months and enjoyed it massively. I played EQ and UO for 2 years until I moved to DAoC for 2 years so I have some experience with MMORPG's. I'm also looking forward to seeing what EQ2 has to offer sadly I as yet have not managed to get hold of an account.

So basically I was trying to give everyone a feel of WoW and exploring/adventuring (which I also enjoy).. I'm glad that EQ2 is due for release a bit before WoW so I can play EQ and decided which game is for me by personal experience.

Have a very open mind to this and think the great thing is that we have 2 hopefully great games to look forward to adventuring in for Christmas and into 2005.

Hi En!gma, that is my /played time in game. I'm a frustrated powergamer (have job, family and other commitments). I've played WoW for 4+ months now and have 3-4 other low level characters and my Main at lvl 58. Average /played time for a lvl 60 I've see is about /10-12 days. Some have done it faster I'm sure.... when WoW goes live its almost garenteed that in under 2 weeks there will be a population of lvl 60's running around image

That I dont agree with as a WoW beta tester. It is a matter of how you play the game. There is nothing preventing someone who wants to achieve a number from doing so when they dedicate the working days and nights to doing so. And I think it will not be a majority.

As a casual accomplisher in mmorpgs since Ive been playing since the good'ol days of UO, I find myself, like many, who try to enjoy and take advantage of many of the games offerings.

On my second character, I pace at achieving shy of mid-point at 6-7 weeks of play - level 25. Thats while I perform a primary trade and a few support trade skills, plus non-level oriented adventuring and scouting for PvP encounters.

So in short. . .I believe that with any mmorpg, that the population of lower to mid-level players will far exceed the population of high-level power gamers.
