Thinking about building a new pc soon...

I apologize ahead of time for making yet another "building a new pc" topic.

I built my current pc in March of 2007. I am pretty happy with its performance still, but it could be a bit better. I am thinking about either upgrading what I have, or just building a new one and selling the old one.

Here is what I have atm:

OS - Windows XP Home
MB - Gigabyte 965P-DS3 (supports quad-core and FSB 1333 mhz processors)
Processor - Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz (OC to 3GHz with Zalman 9500)
Memory - 4GB Corsair Dual Channel DDR2 800 (yes I know I am only benefiting from 3GB with XP, but I got the second set of 1GB sticks for <$50)
Video - XFX 512MB 8800GT
PSU - Coolmax 750W (modular)
HDD - Western Digital 7200 RPM SATA
Case - Antec 900 (absolutely love this case)

So basically what I would like to get from you all is some opinions on upgrades to what I have, and/or a new setup for around $1,500-$2,000. I play lots of FPS, do a bit of video editing, and will be playing mmos again as soon as something worthy releases.

Playing - Minecraft, 7 Days To Die, Darkfall:ROA, Path of Exile

upgrade your processor and video card and call it a day or if youre willing to spend that kind of cash you can build another computer.

For right now, I don't think you need to anything. The only thing you might want to do is...( don't hate me for this )  install Vista for Dx10. Otherwise, I would just wait til what ever game you want play releases their system requirements and go from there.

i agree with the two posts above me. right now you're in a "funny" place, you're system is perfectly good, but you want more. i think the best optiions you have now are...

    swap your processor

    "upgrade" to vista 64bit

upgrade your video card or get a cheap match and sli them

swap you out hard drive for either a raid config or maybe a v.raptor ..hell... maybe a ssd (you can always take it with you when you officially upgrade)

i don't think building a new i7 rig is really worth it to you right now.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think I may wait a while longer before I upgrade after all.

    us$200 gpu comparison from 18 Dec 2008.

W7 may retail by this summer (ddr3 system memory and DX11, ?1600MHz fsb)

Did not notice if you will be using 56K dial-up or broadband (?90KB/s or 5GB/s)

Also the posting demands at resolution 1080x720-921,600pixel is alot different than 1600x1200-1.9Mp or even 2580x1600-4Mp; what display monitor will you be using? 17, 21, 35" LCD or 42" & 65" plasma tv...

dual desktop stereo speakers out of your computer or 5.1/7.1 surround sound through a +100 watt amplifier!

Well with Windows 7 coming next fall I think it be best just to wait for that.

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

get a 64 bit OS (preferably Vista, because its faster for gaming and multitasking as long as your system can handle it), new CPU (I'd recommend an OC'd E8400), new video card (AMD HD 4870 1GB), and most importantly get a second hard drive for your OS and games such as a 10 000RPM Raptor, or a Solid State Drive. One of the most important upgrades you can get for gaming is a hard drive, you will benefit more from it than anything else on the list...most people just overlook it and stick with a plain 7200rpm hard drive. They are even more important for MMORPG's...upgrading from the HD you have now to a SSD would be like SLIing your video cards or something.

easy!!!  get a Q6600 and overclock it, you will get a LOT more out of that 8800.

There is no reason to replace a G92 8800 yet...

also be CAREFUL!!!!! I have the same MoBo and unless its a different revision the DS3 does NOT support 1333 FSB processors... I know I tried... the S3 does, the DS3 does not.  Sucks I know...   But fear not... the Q6600 is great, especially overclocked.
