Time for some DAOC?

Just wondering, since FailHammer and Age of Fail, have gone IPO, and their stock is sinking, you all ready for some DAOC action again?  Over the past weeks total server populations have increased.

Let's get Mythic to put some time into their Origins Server as they promised months ago.  Lots of folk say they will resub when/if Origins comes to fruition.

I think i'll give it a shot, DAOC was the last mmo I really considered "good"

I was hoping origins would be out by now though :(

I am giving in and downloading the trial to play the Classic servers for now. While I'd love for Origins to come out, I suppose there's no guarantee it will ever come out, or if it does, if it'll be too far off into the future and miss the train.

Classic just doesn't have the Trials of Atlantis expansion included (aside from races and stuff), so all the raiding, gear and areas from that crap is gotten rid of. Also, there is New Frontiers, which is a different version of the RvR area that was released originally and a bit into the game.

Origins will have the Old Frontier that was released originally, with some needed improvements, and I believe only the content from up to Shrouded Isles, I believe (their first expansion, ultimately their best one as well), aside from some changes here and there, and some included races. They're also removing and upgrading certain classes to make the realms easier to balance out, and all that good stuff. Also, I believe they're looking into some game mechanics such as crowd control to make them a bit better, such as lowering the amount of time someone can be out of the fight due to a crowd control spell down to like 20-25 seconds max, or something like that.

Hopefully someone corrects me, or you go looking for other information now, in case I got something wrong. :)

First of all thanks for the information. What i got out of it though is that its sorta like eq1 but that you can be cced for over 20 secs right now which ive noticed in most mmo's if your cced for 20 sec+ you are dead. But what id like to know little more about is the game play and if i play now being lvl 1 will i have no chance to run with the big dogs? Or am i just going to be in a noob zone with not many people and geting owned evertime i walk around a cornor?

I don't think it'll be so bad. I think the only problem with the game at the moment, is that if you're used to playing WoW with a really high population and people running around all over the place, you might find DAoC a bit lonely. I believe most people playing are probably in the high to max level range.

However, if you get in, find some other low levels to befriend and get a good group of people you can talk to and play with on occasion, then most aspects of the game might come together in the end.

As for the CC time, don't think of this like other games. Of course at some points, it could ruin you, but I believe in DAoC, for the most part, if you're hit once, you're back in, but if everyone leaves you alone and goes for your allies, then you're out of luck and have to wait for it to wear off on its own... of course by then, your team may be wiped out, and you'd have to try and run away, but you never know. I don't think fights are generally won or lost in 20 seconds on DAoC.

DAoC is not a free for all killing field that you have to look over your shoulder every moment to make sure you won't take an ax to the spine.  It's separated into PvE and PvP zones where you have a "safe" area where you can kill monsters and level up and do fun PvE stuff and then you have Battle Grounds and RvR zones where once you enter, you're fair game for the other 2 realms.  Same realms can't kill each other unless they're dueling and even then it's more like being knocked unconscious.

The battle grounds are open and persistent.  This means that there is no limit to the amount of people that can come and go at any time they wish.  There is a keep in the middle of it that all 3 sides fight over and can control.  Once you control it it stays in your control unless one of the other 2 realms takes it away from you.  This means that you can come back tomorrow and still hold the center keep.

Battles in DAoC always lasted longer then what you see in games today.  A fight between to shield using fighters for instance could go on for quite a long time.  I've had a fight that lasted 10 minutes.  After that my oponent and I decided to go our separate ways because we were not getting anywhere.  There are of course counter measures to the CC so even if you get Mezzed it's not a guaranteed win.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

Truly the best mmorpg ever made, pve and pvp wise.

Its major issue today is it population which is just low. Mythic should do a 2 months free for ALL. to see if they can get people back into the game and sticking around.

2 months is just being greedy. Maybe a couple weeks at the most. And it shouldn't be free for all, just free for anyone that had an account to come back and try it out again.

But I'd say they should do this when they release Origins, as right now there wouldn't be anything overly new to show off.

I hope Mythic continues to improve WAR, just because I've really taken a liking to the lore, BUT I also want them to shift some of their focus back to DAoC. First step: Combined monthly sub for the two games, $20 a month preferably.

  • IlliusIllius Member UncommonPosts: 4,142

If they ever give a combination camelot/war sub I'd consider it but I'd also ask if it was possible to get a break in the price if I don't play WAR.  If anything just give me a cheeper DAoC sub price and I'd consider comming back and perhaps that would be some incentive to bring others back as well.

Do you want NEW people to pick up the game if so 2 months is the min. it will take for them to find a class they like , people to play with etc.

Giving 2 weeks free will bring back a lot of old players for . . .  2 weeks; which, is not the goal.

The two week trial is more than enough for any player to know whether or not they think a game is worth playing for long.

If they're not interested by the second or third day, then they'll generally be done with the game.

Seeing as there are 2 week trials it must be working huh.

The evidence says one of two things.

One; people hate daoc, after all anyone atm can try it for 2 weeks.

Two; two weeks while enough to know if you like the basics of the game is not long enough to be come atatcked to it as an mmorpg.

See mmorpgs are investments that is how they are played, and that si why people pay. If i think this game is great, however, there is no one also playing with me i am not goign to personally continue to pay to play a game BAISCLY BY MYSELF. That si the current state of daoc, and two week free trials or free play is not going to change this. You need to restart the community , including old players and more importantly NEW PLAYERS. The best way to do this is to give people some time to make friends, find small grousp of people to play with , and give them hope that in the future there  will be people to play with.

I reread your initial post, and I read it as giving everyone a 2 month trial, but if you meant a period of opening it up for everyone so people can come and go, and then stopping it at a specific date, and advertising for it, etc., then I suppose it would work.

Though, still, 2 months is much longer than it takes to get someone into a game. I bet there was never a "Well, I wasn't sure at first, but after two full months of playing I think I finally like this game."
