WoW Overrated

xBrandoxBrando Member Posts: 91

The title says it all. I'm not here to make a statement just want to hear what other people say. Ive been a long time WoW player for about 3 years now. I look at WoW reviews and I see 9.5's and perfect 10's even. Is WoW deserving of this? To be completely honest from my point of view WoW isnt any diffrent from any other MMO. Lately, Ive been considering quitting WoW and moving onto something else, is it worth quitting? Now my final question....

Is WoW overrated?

WoW isn't different anymore. It used to be in the beginning because there weren't any other MMOs that allowed casual players to progress at a good pace. A lot of other game companies have copied that since it has released so there are more options out there now.

If you're just coming into the game then the rating is correct, but if you've been there awhile it doesn't. Anyways only you can answer if you're ready to quit.

I think WoW is a great game and at the same time it is over rated.  By that I mean there are a lot of great game concepts that are missing and could improve the game.   It does offer the most complete game on the market though.

As long as you are not burned out on WoW to the point that you mindlessly hate it (like some around these forums), you will only appreciate WoW more when you play most other games once the newness of them wears off.

That is why I think so many people rate it so high.  Not because it is the perfect game, but because across the board it hits the mark and outclasses just about all the rest of the competition.

There's times when I love WoW, and there's times when I hate it and it gets boring.

In the case of that I go looking for an MMO to replace WoW and it doesn't live up to my expectations and I just go back to WoW. I think MMO's are just bad for me in general. FPS games aren't much better, they're all repetative as well.

So, to be honest, I think 2008 was just a crap year in general. Hopefully 2009 holds some good games to come out, I'm looking at Bioware's single player mRPG (dragon: origins) and SW:TOR (whenever it will be released) possibly even Darkfall, and Jumpgate, though I really aren't interested in them.

    It's a waiting game, I'm afraid.

Sometimes you just burn out on MMO's in general. Just take a break from MMO's and dust off the good ole console.

At mmorpg.com forums Wow is certainly UNDERrated.

Luckily the editors of mmorpg.com corrected this with a 9.2 score. Highest ever.

Of course WotLK is still underrated with this score. Compared to all other games it is by far the best computer game ever. Here is my list.

    1. World of Warcraft 9.5

    2. Close Combat #1 8.5

    3. Sid Meirs Gettysburg 8.0

    4. MtG On Line (before 2007) 7.5

    5. Warcraft 3 7.0

Based on playing time and fun while playing.

All the rest of the computer games can be forgotten and a waste of money, because not ONE other took my interest for longer than 3 months. All the above mentioned had at least a 6 months playing time for me.

So underrated ?, Only if you hate computer games and not take a serious look at how long you play it.

I dont' think WOW is drastically better than other MMORPGs... but it is massively more polished and smooth than other games.  Yes, you can point at flaws in WOW, but all it takes is playing another MMORPG for a month to realize why WOW is not overrated.

    Is McDonald's overrated?

    Is Coke overrated?

    Is Windows overrated?

Now I could swing a dead cat and hit a number of folks on this forum and in my office and find people who would say yes to all three of those. Then why do we use them, eat them, or drink them? Because all three of those companies have made themselves and their product accessible to a broad market.

That is exactly what Blizzard has done. WoW has its flaws as someone mentioned but its a fairly easy game to get into and has lots of other people to play with.

WoW is the equivalent of asking your friend if he wants a soda, telling him you only have coke, and him being fine with that.

If WoW is overrated, then it's not Blizzard's achievement but the failure of other MMO companies who still can't make any game as good as WoW is.

Sounds like you at least need to take a break.

Imo, rankings have always been flawed.  Typically I'll read the accompanying review and decide whether the game is worth even a trial.  A recent example personally has been WAR.  Based on reviews, rankings, and what I thought would've been lessons learned from DAoC, I decided to give WAR a trial month.

To the question about WoW being over-rated, in comparison to titles released in the previous four years, I'd have to say no, it's not.  WoW is one of the rare polished, working MMOs; based on that alone I give Blizzard high marks.  Now that doesn't mean WoW is worth a 10, or even a 9.5, and the game can certainly be improved.  However, WoW is generally a fun game and warrants a high mark.

Yes.  There are so many other great games out there (non-mmo, console, PC, you name it) that it's not worth my time to grind for gear and reputation for another 2 years until another expansion.  I'm fully convinced that those people who refuse to stop playing WoW and try ANYTHING new are not really "gamers."  I have no clue what they are, but a true gamer wouldn't be caught dead grinding out essentially the same crap for years on end.  UGH.

Being a "gamer" has nothing to do with the question...but I do see your point. I think it's more that players would hate to give up their elite status that they are used to in WoW. Starting over as a "n3wb" in a new game is a scary thought

WoWs main problems are poor customer service, no idea what they are doing on pvp issues.

Keep in mind when Kevin Beardslee was the man and not Tom Chilton the original Vanilla WoW

was all that and more, it was self destruction that deminished WoW to it's current state of ( just oridinary).

you took 3 years to discover the answer?

    ok wow is over rated.

now tell me which other game did you played for 3 years? was it better than wow?

  • RavenRaven Member UncommonPosts: 2,005

I dont really look to scores to shape my own taste of things its like going on IMDB looking for a movie to watch I have watch rated 9 movies which i consider crap as i have watched rated 5 which i think are brilliant, that being said because a magazine has given it a 10 it does not put it in a bubble that has to be perfect.

Now to my own opinion i take WoW as a 9.5 easily. Why? Because from everything I have played it is the best in my eyes its where i had most fun and continue to have fun at the moment.

Long story short, you are not gonna get any right answer from this discussion if you like it , it can be a 9 if you dont you will consider it overrated.

Like a lot of others I think it is the most polished MMO. I took a year break from it while I tried other MMo's and none of them lasted with me for more than 1-2 months, except for LotRO. I think it offers the greatest variety of things to do in a MMO and that is where other games fall short. A lot of ppl, will go out and try and "beat the game" by getting max level as fast as they can and then see what is left to do and with WoW there is still quite a bit of things you can do and enjoy the game.

No doubt about it, WOW is a well made MMO and there is fun to be had there.

Of course, it doesn't appeal to everyone, so it is not highly rated by them, but since ratings are subjective no way to say that its "over-rated". Depends who you're asking I suppose.

IMO No it isn't... You played for 3 years.. which other game has held you that long?

Seriously though, this is one of those "in the eye of the beholder" things, and kind of silly to even bother asking anyway, especially on this site.

I agree. Starting out again for most people is a scary thought. This is why the other games released have not made a big hit like WoW. People are to concerned with the "I have to spend X amount of time regrinding up to max lvl." I love the feel of a new game with a new story and new lands to explore and new players to meet and kill. The reason why games need to release Xpacs is the same thing in disguse. grind to x lvl in new content. you replace all your awesome elite gear in the 1st new area with "not so elite gear" the sec you step out in the new Xpac. all I am saying is dont be afraid to try new things, maybe you'll like them.
