When UO came out, the genra was new. It didn't matter how bad it wqas because there was no competition. Its like Nosfaratu, its a genra definer in that it was pretty well done considering nobody had done anything like that before. But ten thousand horror movies later, a remake of Nosfaratu would not be a crowd pleaser.
So exactly how can a game that aims to copy outdated, out-moded concepts expect to compete? Does Adventurine have a time machine that they will use to distribute the game to the year 1986?

That's the funny thing about nostalgia goggles.
We'll see in 2 weeks.
Of course, if it does fail due to lack of interest, the die-hards will simply say that DF "didn't do it right" and begin clamoring for the next PVP MMO.
If these boards are any indication, the majority of mmo players these days are people who started with WoW. Like it was when UO was released, most people still have never experienced open world gameplay with consequences. It is still new to them. Some of these people will react to this newness the same way a catholic priest reacts to change (immediate dismissal), some will approach it with curiosity to see what its like, and some will approach it with genuine interest for something that isn't like every other game out there. Then there are the mmo vets that will approach it with nostalgia.
Do I think it will be just like it was when UO first released? Hell no. There will be more whining now then there was then, because the average age of computer users has been lowered tremendously in the past 10 years. But I think the timing is still pretty good - there has been no other time to date in the history of mmos where people were more starved for something different.
Waiting for: A skill-based MMO with Freedom and Consequence.
Woe to thee, the pierce-ed.
UO came out in 1999, and virtually ALL MMO gamers from the pre WoW days are desperate for ANY game that doesn't resemble WoW, or a game made in the style of those old, and good, MMOs.
Ultima Online, was probably the most immersive MMO and community based MMO ever made. That's what people forget, MMOs are about community and social interaction. Throw in some challenge, risk vs reward, no instances, and you've got something the old crowd has been dying for. There's a reason people hate WoW.
Darkfall Travelogues!
They can compare DF to UO all they want , just as long as they realize we reserve the right to compare WoW to Furtopia.
UO gameplay, the one that were existant before Age of Shadows were introduced february 2003 (defineltly ruined UO), was the best we seen in any MMO up to resent days.
So making a 3-D game based partly on the best gameplay we ever seen is as i see it delivering a winner.
UO concept isnt a outdated concept for the communities. How can it be? With no game with the spirit of UO created after AoS, how can we call it a outdated concept? The players havent had a chance to have their say on what type of game is preferable.
It seems outdated though according to some of the largest game developers that only delivers the same boring themepark games in a never ending stream. WoW is the game we should mostly blame for this "evolution". They have simplified this genre and made it a very stupid one. They also had such a financial success with their game that most other game developers seems to see this type of game as the only financial acceptable version of a MMO.

Totally agree with every word.
There is reasons why WoW is soo hated by the Darkfall fans. WoW stands for everything i hate in a MMO and have pretty much removed the "UO games" from the MMO market. Noone had the balls to make a game that isnt a WoW clone. A too much of a finacial risk it seems.
So WoW is the game i blame for not having a MMO to play since 2003. Played UO freeshards to 2008. That might give some proportion to why the WoW hate over at Darkfall main website is as it is.

Huh???
What about all of us who played UO in 1997 & 1998? What were we playing?
Sorry, the UO I played came out September 25, 1997.
I think a LOT of posters on these forums will be surprised if they get what they wish for.

Totally agree, as you can see in my sig i'm an oldschool UO player. One thing that worries me about DF, as been mentioned before. WoW holds somewhere around 65%( is that right) of the mmorpg community, and was/is many people's first mmorpg, the first mmorpg you play seems to be what everyone compares by, I do the same. DF seems to be more hardcore with the full loot open PVP ect. To some people this is heaven, but unfortunatly we are the minority. Its such a drastic change between games, I just dont see WoW players liking DF, Assuming they don't, that leaves only 35% of the mmo market for DF to gather subscribers from, even if the percentage is higher....it will be tough considering how many games crowd the mmo market. Don't get me wrong, i'm not bashing DF, if you read my previous post, i'm indeed hoping it will succeed. It just looks to be a tough thing to do. It's only chance is it HAS to be the new "Holy Grail" mmorpg with everything they've promised, and artwork pleasing to the masses, Even a slightly above average game will go down in flames at this point. ( My opinion )

Not that it makes your percentages any more favorable for DarkFall, but I think you being too simplistic in saying WoW vs. non-WoW (the 65% vs. 35%)
A better comparison would be the percentage that focuses on PvE vs. PvP.
DarkFall will attract a number of hardcore WoW PvP'ers.
More so than say players that are enjoying LoTRo, EQ2, Vanguard, etc.
DarkFall will attract players that are currently playing a PvP heavy game or are playing on a PvP server of a PvE game. THAT will be DarkFall's audience. There will obviously be some PvE'ers that may indeed give DarkFall a shot and even like it enough to stay. They will not make up a significant portion of DarkFall's player-base though.
P.S. And by the way... UO came out in 1997.... NOT 1999.
geez enough w/ the comparisons already, that's not important... here's a vid on what the game is like, enjoy:

Yeah DF will attract hardcore PVPer's but the reason I used WoW as the example is, as I said in my post, many people's first mmorpg, and the other reasons I mentioned. And yes I know UO came out in 97 , I was just quoting the previous guy.
And btw Hidden1, I enjoy reading your post's, you actually have thought behind your post, which is refreshing. you da man

I still think by sheer mass of numbers that DarkFall will garner just as many or more ex-WoW players than they do from any other MMO. The one exception may be WAR.
The poll that was posted here from off of the official forums seems to back that up as well. Here is the link:
