Will the new Conan Film have any significant impact on AoC?

chryseschryses Member UncommonPosts: 1,453

With some mild excitement i saw that a new Conan film will be released this year or maybe next.  Besides looking forward to another great fantasy hack and slash film I wonder if it will have any major impact on AoC?

It will have an affect but how much is the question.  if Funcom have any sense they should ride the back of this film and try and promote heavily for new players.  One of the statements I saw below and the link if anyone is interested.

Conan the Barbarian (aka Conan the Cimmerian, from the name of his homeland, Cimmeria) is a famous character of heroic fantasy created by American writer Robert E. Howard in 1932 via a series of fantasy stories sold to Weird Tales magazine

Since his debut Conan has been adapted to many other supports from comic book to tv, video game and cinema.

A new Conan movie has been decided with a release set for 2009 2010.

Good chance this will go straight to DVD, just like AoC went straight to the Bargain Bin.

Sad that the REH family didnt maintain their ownership of the IP, now its basically gettin exploited by any jackass who wants to swindle a couple bucks outta the fans.

Actually I saw some news about Red Sonia and even a poster recently.  I actually think it may do ok purely because there is a complete lack of fantasy sword fest films since Lord of the Rings.  Be interesting to see the impact on LotR MMO after the trilogy was released.

If it is a good movie or at least a movie that sells good, then there will be some impact on AoC. I wouldn't say it's going to be a big impact since, it still does take a powerful computer to run AoC and because only a small fraction of moviegoers are online gamers.

On the other hand, if the movie sucks ass or fails to sell at the box office...you can expect to see a big negative impact on AoC within the online MMORPG community.

I don't think it will have a significant impact to either way.

If the movie is good, it might generate couple of thousand new subs, but most of those will probably quit after first month. If it's bad, current subscribers (mainly hardcore fans) will keep on playing until the end.

I just think the movie will not become huge like LOTR. Their choice of director was bad and I just don't see any current male actors doing what Arnold did.

Only if the movie comes with DX10 features. :)

    1) Aronld was a bad choice for conan

    2) The only way this will have an impact on the game is if the people who see the movie are gamers that don't already play the game, and even then there would have to be advertisment before the movie was shown about AoC

    Wtf?

Dumbest comment I've read in a long time.

First Conan was a SMASH HIT worldwide. It's still considered a great movie by many people. Arnold was PERFECT for that role and I believe he had a huge part in making that movie a hit.

Maybe I misunderstood but the trilogy was released before LOTRO.

As far as a Conan movie and how it would effect AOC its pretty hard to say. Without  a major advertising campaign and a giant number of people deciding to start playing MMOs it will probably have almost zero effect. Within the MMO community it might draw some players back to take a second look.

Movie had a budget of $20 million and it grossed $70 million worldwide + 21 million for rentals.

Also it won a Golden Globe and got 7 other nominations, including Razzie Award for "Worst Actor" to Arnold Schwarzenegger .

It does have some B-movie elements but it was a great success and Arnold was a BIG part of that. Literally.

Not to mention that it was a great year for movies and had some pretty strong competition. Those of us that areold enough to recall that year can recall some strong contenders

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1982_in_film

Also remember that it was a violent  movie in its time and it was rated R. Both things hurt overall numbers as it limits traffic.

Not a B movie. If you were to read a list of B movies from that year you probably wouldnt see a familiar title  unless you are a fringe non mainstream movie buff.

Then again BAYWATCH was the #1 TV show WORLDWIDE for years.

As others have said, a GOOD / POPULAR conan movie might bump AOC a bit (as a current player I'd like to see that obviously) but these things are very tricky to predict... Once upon a time, big superhero movies were often cited as good ways to get NEW readers into their respective comics (readers who would then stay reading / trying other comics after the movie faded).. hence lots of origin story flashbacks, changeing characters to match the film versions etc would occur just prior / after the film premieres. These days the influx of new readers from films like Iron Man / The Dark Knight seem to be much lower / transient.

So imho, for AOC to benefit long term from the release of the film you need

    (1) the film to be good or at least popular (not necessarily the same thing )

    (2) AOC (and Funcom) to be in better shape content wise etc in order for it to survive as a mainstream MMO for when the film comes out and

    (3) for AOC to buck the trend seen from other similar genre movies

I love AOC but I wouldn't like to bet on it benefitting in any big way from the new film

Conan the Barbarian had John Millius, Oliver Stone and Arnold Schwarzenegger on board.

    Who does this one have?

    Exactly.
