With both industry monsters debuting in November, those of us with limited budgets will be looking for the wiser (in terms of total return on investment through things like fun) purchase.
Everquest 2 ships on November 6th and World of Warcraft on November 15th. (From EBgames.)
I know a bit about each.
World of Warcraft has lesser graphics, but is set in a unique and familiar environment, and is sure to have an active (if young) community a la battle.net. Similarly its probably going to bring back fluffy Diablo II community memories. Bu they did produce great games, that I still play, including Starcraft, Diablo II, and Warcraft III.
Everquest II is a sequel to a game I never played. But being the first, truely successful graphical MMORPG, I think they have a good foot in the door. The game is supposed to be the graphic mmorpg standard (maybe less then Lineage II) and audio to boot.
Anyways, which (if your in my same budget position) are you getting and why?
And which would you recommend if your choice is biased in some personal preference rather then applicable logic?

Its going to be really interesting to see the feedback and the amount of complaints once both these games come out.
Another aspect i dont think many people have taken into account about this debate is the release of Halo 2.
dont know why i say this..but these games will prolly get way overshadowed
Actually, I'm getting both. I got suckered into preordering EQ2 by my ex-roommate. We started EQ together and he played it until earlier this summer. I stopped once DAoC launched. A bunch of our old friends are getting it and we thought it would be kewl to get the game and just go out and have fun. Problem is that there is a chance of guild drama being transversed into the new game, which I've only heard about from the others and I am not happy with. I don't really want to play EQ2 because, it just wasn't my cup-o-tea. It was great for the time I played it but I moved on once I found something better for me.
I played a little bit of WoW during the Stress Test and immediately it caught my attention. I loved the WarCraft series and to actually play in the world its based on just struck me in the right spot. I have total faith in Blizzard because, like you, I haven't been disappointed in any game they've released. The only thing that they ticks me off is their release date push-backs (remembers Dialbo II).
Anyways, its truly up to you to decide, but bewarned. There are about 20+ posts on this very topic and most of them become flaming peices of poo falling from the sky because of the "EQ2 sucks! No WoW sucks! No you Suck!" posts that may eventually come about this thread.
Good luck

I was going to get WoW, no questions asked, until I slowly felt atrophy creep in concerning the paladin class. I am a career RPG paladin player and the overall health of the class is my number one buying point.
Well, I really don't know anymore since they still haven't patched in the alleged "awesome" changes to the paladin along with the talents, so I really don't know. When and if they do, my final decision will be made at that point.
World of Warcraft turns me off when I hear people reaching max levels so fast, it plays very smoothly but it was almost too easy no real struggle. I honestly haven't learned the PvP of WoW and ultimately as you'll read I need a MMORPG with at least the chance of PvP. I fear WoW will be no real investment or feel I won't impact the playfield. The newbie area well I felt like I was there alone I saw others but there was no need to be with others, so it felt like a single player game no one to talk with, why was I there again? I have played WoW for about 3 hours in closed beta.
Everquest II, has no PvP...suddenly if I have no fear for my life in any form well how do I get an excited rise from any risk? So I'm drawn to its graphics more than WoW, my computer isn't top notch so I'll love it but wonder what it plays like on a top notch rig. So if its just like EQ is but the next level with more pretty advances, can it hold my interest I do not know, the original EQ failed 3 times, but I can say that my roommate plays it to this day and his playing hasn't dragged me to play it. I have not played EQ II beta.
So I am struggling, I fear neither of these two giants on a grand scale will win me.
luravi since you live pvp so much, you could try out Guild Wars, the world preview started yesterday ^_^ tried it and so far ive had a blast, fun pvp ^_^
EQ2 has nice graphics, nice pve. WoW has nice graphics(cartoony but i like em), nice pve, and some pvp, so i will go for WoW ^_^ need pvp, i play mmorpgs only to pvp hehe oh and raid boss mobs as well ^^
Richijefe... level 61 Silver Ranger on Bartz... quit 4 months ago ^_^

EQII, because I'm having a lot of fun playing it than WoW. WoW is getting way too much hype.

I'd say EQ2 is getting more hype. I've had a double fold out super glossy add in Computer Gaming World for the past 3 issue for EQ2.
WoW finally had an add in this past issue. (a couple pages from the EQ2 add)
Oh, another one of these threads . . . well, that's ok, I like them and by now I think I have gotten very good at answering them
I am getting Everquest II. Everquest has been my favorite all-time mmorpg until now. They really have an excellent handle on High-Fantasy type settings and some good lore and background stories.
SOE, although often criticized, maybe sometimes unfairly due to their huge successes, makes great mmorpgs. Star Wars Galaxies was a success despite all of its bugs and unpolished gameplay features, because it offered more choices for the player. It opened the door for roleplayers with all of it's fantastic character customizations, emotes, moods, and many others opportunities for roleplaying.
I can see Everquest II expanding on this, hopefully making it another great mmorpg for roleplayers and less attractive to the powergamer. Powergamers did not like SWG, you see. In my opinion this is why it gets such a bad rap, simply because there are so many more powergamers than roleplayers.
Graphics in Everquest II will be excellent telling by the screens and movies. Better then Lineage II in my opinion, and that is pretty damn good. Not only will the graphics be nice, but the dynamic environment will help create and immersive feeling as trees sway, birds fly overhead, wind gusts and blows debris around, etc. These are things that some friends in the beta say really capture the mood in certain zones. The sound should help immerse you in the gameworld even more.
I choose Everquest II also because of a few things I don't like much about World of Warcraft. First and most important is the player community and what I am hearing. They say roleplaying isn't really taking shape in the beta, but this is understandable, it is a beta afterall. But I have heard that there may not really be much roleplaying in the final release of WoW. This is very discouraging for me.
Another simple and important fact is that Everquest II is coming out first. Sure it may have more bugs, actually I excpect it would going by SOE's track record with releases and Blizzards next to perfect track record. That does not bother me in the least. These games will continually improve and get fixed. Although I insist on a playable game at release, I can deal with some bugs at the start.
I can go on about some other factors, but for me I guess these are key. The most important being my preference for Everquest type of setting and the expectations I have for roleplaying in Everquest II.
If my expectations turn out to be dashed with an inferior game, I will certainly be getting World of Warcraft . . .
I reccommend not listening to other people's opinions. Try World of Warcraft open beta which should start really soon, considering the closed beta test just ended. I would say to try EQ2 as well, but they don't have an open beta
I played Everquest for 3 years, and it was a great game, despite what many people say. But my suggestion is to try World of Warcraft, and if that doesn't suit you, play Everquest 2.
BTW, i voted for World of Warcraft solely because the Everquest 2 system requirements are too high for my computer. If i had a better computer, i would probably get both, but most definatly get EQ2.
I refuse to give Sony another penny.
Im buying both games. Both are equally good games with a lot of potential.
Also, there are times when I don't understand why people say they wont buy another thing from Sony. Last time I checked, they made some pretty nice TV, DVDs, etc. I sure as heck wont buy them because of my experiences with Star Wars Galaxies. Same rule applies with EQ2; entirely different team of people
But to each their own.
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
I'm so sick of the hype. I already feel like I've been playing them both for a year and got bored.
If I had to choose between the two though. I think I'de go for WoW. I love the Warcraft graphical style and Blizzard are renowned for the quality of their games.
EQ2 just seems to full of itself to me. I kinda find the background a little bit pretentious. WoW seems much more tongue in cheek to me.
In general I'm feeling a bit jaded about the genre. I really don't see EQ2 or WoW bringing anything new to the table. Just combat, crafting and quests.
Hopefully someone's gonna shake things up soon and do us all a favour.

They havent taken it into account because its not a factor. They are comparing mmorpg and since Halo2 isnt, its not a runner.
I think everythings already been said about EQ2 vs WoW. The best way to decide is to play open beta for WoW and read alot of reviews for EQ2 then make a educated guess. Doesnt matter really though, if one games good and the other is bad, then people will just buy the good game and bit ethe bullet for the bad game.

Its the same thing as non game development. The differnet dev team doesnt mean a whole lot. Its the upper management who wants certain things to appease there warped sense of "correct" who force the devs to follow a doomed path. You always end up with non-engieneers/non-gamers in the real positions of power with the ability to write the checks.
To get to that level, you have to spend your time climbing the ladder, not gaming or writing code. Sad really
I will get a TV from soney anyday as SOE isnt in charge of TVs......the same head honchos for SWG that we dont see are the same head honchos for EQ2.

Both are very simple i like each of em but i would have to go with eq2 and actually the eq2 beta was the first eq i played but im buying neather beacouse i have 2 mmos to keep up with all ready
Pasomatt this Instructional Video is just for you.
Simple? The frickin combat wheel in EQ2 was the most confusing thing ever, especially since there was no real tutorial or directions on how to use it.
Anyway, I'm definately getting WoW over EQ2. EQ2 is being totally rushed and definately isn't ready for launch while WoW, though it will also be launched with some mixing features and content, is a lot more ready, a lot more unique, and ultimately it was a lot more fun for me.

What I mean is that there are so many icons on it, and it doesn't even tell you what most of them do.
Well there is a small tutorial when you first activate your first HO. A box comes up with a guy telling you how they work.
It tells you pretty much everything about them if I remember right.. it tells you that certain skills have certain symbols associated with them, etc.
