looking for a little help from experienced players

Hello, my friend and I are looking for a new mmo. We have done some research and it came down to WAR, WOW, LOTRO, or this. AOC seems like the obvious answer, but we have some questions. If you dont wanna read all of this just answering one question would be a huge help, thanks.

1. How much armor and weapons are there in the game?  Is there enough armor and weapons to keep you constantly swapping in one piece for another as you level up/obtain new ones?

2. I've read that every class can solo to 80, but what about groups? Are they easy to find? Can you get rare armor/weapons from group work?

3. Monsters. Is there a wide variety?  Are you always fighting the same types of mobs or does every zone have its own?

4. Finally, if there is alot of gear, does it all look the same? We have played Final Fantasy XI and a level 10 warrior can sometimes be wearing armor that looks exactly the same as a level 75 warrior.

Basically, we just want a game with a very wide variety or armor, weapons, and quests. We like to duo, but groups are always fun too.

Thank you

The fanbois will claim their is a ton of variety, but the truth is lack of itemization and unique skins was one of the top complaints since launch, and FC has only added a few new ones from some crafting and some instances. For the most part youll see more twins running around than a fertility clinic.

Oh man, that is very dissapointing, but, I guess that most mmos start out that way, do you think that alot of gear will be released in the future?

    1. I'm going to tell you right now. Armor is not extremely important. Your skill will always be what determines the battle...well unless the person is like 5 levels above you, but even then if you are really talented you can kick their asses. You probably won't be swapping constantly though.

    2. Easy enough on my server. It might take a little effort and some spamming in global chat, but if you get into a good guild you shouldn't have too much trouble.

    3. So far they've been pretty different. So far I've encountered a lot of human type mobs though. Whether that changes later on I don't know. AmazingAvery will be able to help you out there.

    4. Yah gear isn't too varied...although in my personal opinion the armor looks so good and feels so right with the setting of the game that I don't even really notice all that much.

And I would definitely suggest duoing. That is the best way to play. Groups are a ton of fun in AoC.

There are over 41 Thousand Items in the game. There are plenty that look the same and plenty that have unique skins. 41k items..... sure sounds like a lot to me. In game I have PvP gear and PvE gear I change out several times during play.

Yellow Gremlin Database:  aoc.yg.com/  as proof.

They have Hi-Res image now so you can really see the difference in looks:

Here are just a few examples of some items with cool high-res images:

    http://aoc.yg.com/item/Achiton-of-Ef...evotion/277659

    http://aoc.yg.com/item/The-Hand-of-Storms/106950

    http://aoc.yg.com/item/Shield-of-the...cleaver/817446

here are some PvP gear screens (just a sample)  http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/47421

Grouping is not required but there are no shortage of situations where they are handy and useful.

AoC has up to 24 man raid instances and plenty of group instances / dungeons as well as solo ones.

The Black Castle is a low level dungeon which has been revamped - check out some feedback here as an recent example (something most haters here can't give you) forums.ageofconan.com/showthread.php

There are plenty of monsters, there are lots of different types of human mobs too as per the lore.

http://aoc.mmodb.com/bestiary/  is the link you need for the Monster database :) 100's and 100's.

Here is a list of nealy all the area's and the link at the bottom contains a regularly updated list of quests available in each area. The raid stuff is not listed here though.

I dunno about you but it looks appealing to me and experiencing nearly all that since launch and still not uncovered everything yet.

What ever you chose to do - wish you well on it :)

I am not here to persuade you to play the game, I post facts to show you whats there. For  me the game offers and wide variety of things to do in a plesant setting. Difference is a hater will tell you not to play, and here most of them last played months ago and have not experienced the changes first hand. They can tell you how a 1980 car is, how it drives, has 4 doors, steering wheel etc but you know there are some differences to a 2009 model.

    Thank you

If you want some facts from a nonfanboi pretty critical person, take it from me. I just resubbed after having  like a 6 months break and I find this game very refreshing. Gear in particular. You see, FC made every character and every pice of equipment look so damn good, that it's hard to not be swayed by this alone. What Unfinished is saying is somewhat true though (even though he is a extreme hater), neverthe less it's some truth to what he says. A lot of people left 2-3 months after launch due to 1. performance 2. itemization. Well performance have been sorted for months now, but so has itemization. I understand there have been added tons of new items to the game and they just keep adding. Also the whole crafting thing they are expanding on now (city armor, culture armor, basioc armor) also just opens up to a crazy amounts of new looks. So I would say AoC is one of the better games you can get if you like to funk your character up in all sorts of armors and weapons and mean looks. Really nice stuff. (got a few new pices yesterday in fact..wooooot!!)

Then a different thing was mentioned, armors and other items does not play as a big role in AoC as other games as the weight is on player skills instead of the item grind. They decided to change this a couple of months back though, so expect the equipment stats to just keep getting more and more important. good luck.

There's plenty of new items, although a lot of them are just slightly modified existing gear...  Not a lot of unique gear.. The gear that is unique you have to do Dungeons several times and hope they drop, problem with this is trying to find people to do dungeons with, and even if you do, by the time you do get the items you want, odds are you have out leveled them.   So if you like wearing armor that is 20-40 levels below you then ya, good looking armor is possible.

Other possibility is the new cultural recipes, but there extremely rare drops and have a high cost to make, usually they will cost more to make then what a crafter can sell them for so don't hold your breath hoping to find any on the trader.   And if you do find some on the trader the gem slots are more or less useless because of the gem nerf.

Avery posted there is 41k items in the game, what he forgot to tell you is most of that is just recyled graphic skins or slightly modified graphic skins...  There is not 41k unique looking items in this game.  not even close...

I know Funcom has said there going to fix gems and re-itemize stuff, but that could be next week or 12 months from now...  They originally promised a gem fix several months ago and were still waiting....

I find itemization in AoC generic and boring. Everyone looks the same.

They really should use more colors. Now they have 2 colors: brown and slightly less brown.

And yes, you CAN use multiple colors without it looking like a cartoon.

Perhaps you did not read title of this thread  "looking for a little help from experienced players". The text in red was supposed to tell you that you should not answer as you have not played AoC.

    ???

Actually I've played since beta and I still have an active account. I'm probably much more experienced than you, my friend.

    1. How much armor and weapons are there in the game?  Is there enough armor and weapons to keep you constantly swapping in one piece for another as you level up/obtain new ones?
There is not enough different armors to swap each level and look unique all the time. however there is throughout the game a decent amount of sets you can gain whilst leveling that you can gain. Most of the unique looking armors are in instances. At end game you will end up looking the same for some time until you find a new piece you want to use, but this isn't unique to AoC only. Most MMO games have their set of armors that people prefer at 80 due to stats/effects on them. However since gear doesn't matter as much as in WoW you can mix between sets and make something that looks different from what majority is using. AoC also takes a more realistic look of weapons and armors, you won't see pink plate armors etc. Most leather armors usually have a brownish color etc. For weapons a lot of them have the similar models, then again for the game aiming to be more realistic then having cool looking wepons that would be ineffective if they existed for real.
    2. I've read that every class can solo to 80, but what about groups? Are they easy to find? Can you get rare armor/weapons from group work?
This depends a lot on what server you choose, some servers are easier to get groups on then others. Hopefully the upcoming server merge will help this problem to go away. :) Every class can solo to 80, and if you have a group you can do the quests in epic mode which makes all bosses drops better items. so by doing quests in epic mode you can get better items and more unique looking items. Also the main source for rare weapon armors is to do instances.
    3. Monsters. Is there a wide variety?  Are you always fighting the same types of mobs or does every zone have its own?
The lore of Hyboria is in a huge portion aimed towards human fighting humans. You have animals, demons and other humanoid races too, but you will find yourself fighting a lot of the same type of monsters. Each zone has their set of NPC's like the cimmerians fight against vanir's, aquilonian fights the nemedian's etc. You also have picts and undeads around so I never found the variety of mobs to be an issue. It seems to fit the lore quite nicely.
    4. Finally, if there is alot of gear, does it all look the same? We have played Final Fantasy XI and a level 10 warrior can sometimes be wearing armor that looks exactly the same as a level 75 warrior.
A level 10 guardian can look the same as a level 80 one if the player doesn't bother getting different gear. Most of the normal green colored gear in aoc looks very similar. different names and stats, but lookwise not much separates them, the blue gear does look different from the green gear. However you will see the re use of some low level blue gear on higher levels. The gear at higher levels usually has more details but this you don't see before studying the armor more closely
Basically, we just want a game with a very wide variety or armor, weapons, and quests. We like to duo, but groups are always fun too.
Aoc is a game that can easy be done as a duo, there are some solo instances and solo quests but majority of the game can be done as a group and quite often it can be a lot more fun :)
    Thank you

There is a lot of gear, it's just that the difference in much of it isn't really noticible by a quick look. However the raid gear and bos gear does look miles better then the normal gear that drops. But that's how it is in majority of MMO's :)

The advantage AoC has over WAR and WoW is that while those 2 games "forces" you to use the best possible gear you can find, AoC allows for more freedom to choose a mix of gears. Sure you might lack a few bonuses but gear doesn't matter as much as in the 2 mentioned games so missing the stats doesn't really make your class unplayable.

OP be wary, you might want to ask yourself why there is so many a 'I Highly recommend you try AoC'  type responses posted so quickly here. (these folks spend more time on these forums than a real fan could be bothered to, you'd think they would be way too busy actualy playing the game)

There is a reason 80-90% of the folks who bought AoC are no longer subscribing.

Ah then OP you have to be wary of some of the posters in here whose majority of their post history is critical of the game. These folks spend more time on the forums here waiting for a postive post to come up so they can trounce on it.

All in the post history... Please all and you will please none.
