i am afraid of ...

cosycosy Member UncommonPosts: 3,228

there are several things that i "dislike" or better say i am afraid of
one of them is the PING all mmo's have ping/lag problems none have solved that problem and i believe DF is not a exception
servers will be placed in germany and i bet that german players will get better ping that i can get, i am afraid of having most of the time my ping over 60-70 and losing combats because of that

anyone else see this like a potential problem ?

I would be happy and really suprised if anyone in US gets a 60 ping. You will be looking at 120-200 ping is my guess.

I run the Mature Minded Gamers. We do video and board gaming videos and reviews. We also have a big Dungeons and Dragons community with multiple games active each week.

All the new MMOs that are implementing active combat use a server anticipation system to reduce the affect ping has on combat. The system is used in AoC. In AoC the server anticipates where you'll character will be based on you movement, which works great. Sure, sometimes you get the occasional person that hits a player that is standing behind them due to the server knowing that the attack actually started when the enemy was in front of the attacker, but that happens rarely.

DF is using a similar system and the only thing this may affect is archer characters, unless there players have played an FPS game and know how to lead targets, which every FPS player should know how to do and should be done anyways.

People who played in the beta, have told us that lag is _not_ an issue at all. Players from the other side of the world, are having no ping issues what-so-ever.

Err... youre in Romania according to your bio. You are like, what, 700 miles from Germany (1100 kilos app)? Unless the servers to your country will be connected by strings and tin cans through goat and sheep country, I think you can relax, friend, lol.

Now, I'm in the US.... figure the math on that one, but I'm not worried about it much. When they kill me due to distance from the servers, I'll respawn.

one thing i dont know how this server anticipation work in DF there is not sufficient details about that
Claes i dont know if you understand my point is not about being an issue is about "make the difference" in combat

popinjay romania have very good ping "inside" most of connections are 20mb/s or 50mb/s and can play steam game under 10 ping if server is located in romania
when you play on "outside" server the ping go up and from 20mb/s connection you only get 2mb/s

If you feel that 10-20ms is going to make a huge difference in a fight, then yes, you are probably worse off than german players. But if you really think about it, it's not that huge of a disadvantage. Buy some quality gamer gear, including a nice 2ms screen, and you'll be just as good off, as a german player with a regular setup.

I play TF2 from Europe to US and Asia with less than 100 ping. Sooo.. guess it's the ISP's of US and Asia that are the problem?

you can have the best game gear in the world, but if your ping is almost half a second behind another person's, then yes you are at a big disadvantage. No idea what the 2ms monitor has anything to do with connectivity though.......................

Well every player around the world will have a disadavange compared to German player's ping. The difference of 40-50 ms the most European players will have compared German players is not a big deal, but I guess the 200+ ms from NA or Australia is something we can't ignore.

I think a player with 6ms or so has an advantage with some1 who has 250ms. Anyway I don't think this will happen that often, so no reason fo worry that much.

I've no clue how a game is supposed to solve a basic property of telecommunications.

I find it hard to believe that my connection to a busy server in Greece will be "not a problem" for me. I worry that the amount of server prediction will be ridiculous.
