To start off, you can look at the sticky posts at the top of the forum. They should have some good info for you. Next, before you start up Playonline, please open the FFXI config and change the game resolution, set up a controller if you want and get that out of the way. It's set to almost the worst resolution at default. Once you actually get into the game, you can change the keyboard config to WSAD if you want from the main menu.
There are also tutorial NPC's that will help you get your bearings and teach you different aspects of the game while giving you simple quests to do with rewards. If you happen to choose the server I'm on Kujata, I can show you the ropes. Anyway, hope this helps.
To be the best, you must help each other become the best. FFXI Character: Satimasu FFXI Server: Valefor FFXIV Character: Tamorae Fonteil
Don't expect a button-mashing, skilless MMO. You have to think and understand the game, not just click on an icon in a skill bar on the bottom on your screen (in fact there isn't one). If you are a fan of Final Fantasy or if you are someone who like a challenge then this game could be one for you. If you are looking for a game where you run into a group of 30 mobs and button mash for 10 seconds and kill them all, the game is not for you.
im interested in playin a melee damage dealer. Are there any race/class combinations I should stay away from? Also, is this game pretty strong, population wise? Are there servers with low pop where im not gonna be able to find a group?
No, and with level synch, not really. I already offered my server as a choice for you. The game is over 500k subscribers strong and has been pretty much since it came to the US. I wouldn't worry about that.
