LF a casual MMO thats good for duo/solo play

I am looking for a casual MMO that I can play with my gf .  She has gotten into a few xbox360 couch co-op RPG games (fable II, eternal sonata) and when I asked her what she enjoys about them, she says she likes the character progression, loot, and the story.  Sadly, the number of couch co-op RPG games are pretty low.  We've played a few single player xbox360 games where we trade off the controller, but I'd much rather have us play together.

Ideally, I'd have us try a F2P (i'll be paying both accounts if there is a monthly), laid back, low presure MMO, and as mentioned, an emphasis on story, character progression, and "upgrades".  Not needing insane system requirement would be nice, as one of us would be on a laptop.    Any game where we'd be forced to get a bigger group is a no go (although having the option available is nice).      No raiding, and no forced PvP either.  I doubt we'd play much more than few hour a week anyway.

I've played WoW up through end game, and Guild Wars off and on over the years, so I have an idea of what a MMO can provide. GW is the first thing that came to my mind, but I want to see what else is out there.

I will have to say your gut reaction to Guild Wars is a REALLY good choice for your situation.

I can write an essay on it, but pretty much, its VERY versatile in character customization/progression, playstyle, and content. You make your own goals and reach them however and whenever you want. You aren't really forced to play a certain way, almost everything is customizable to your playstyle, and its mainly a co-op game where you can go through the main content with any number of people.

I have been mmo-hopping for years now, but I still get on guild wars and accomplish what I want to accomplish playing solo. It has been my favorite online rpg by far because there are a ton of things i can progress in and feel like im accomplishing things even if I have very little time to play.

I'd say for two people, it would be a great mmo to explore together. You can have some fun making your own little "duo-force" to defeat content. And its pretty light on the wallet, both with no subscription fee and also the fact that now that you can get all 3 separate stories for about $50 for one account (Guild Wars Trilogy). Then if you want to top it off, get the GWEN expansion. (If you are in Europe, you can get the Guild Wars Complete Collection with all 3 games and the expac)

If you do get GW, I would suggest starting with Nightfall. The progression and story is probably the smoothest and matches what you are looking for as far as story and character. Also remember that much of the story really gets exciting after your characters reach max level 20, and even though you have reached max level, you still continue to gain experience and title points for more skills, stronger buffs, etc.

If you liked WoW I suggest giving Runes of Magic a go as it's very similar and it's F2P.

Edit Add: Don't try Darkfall, when it comes out, unless both of you likes full loot open PvP.
