Sorry my quotes key is broken :P
The majority of players these days want wow like games where everything is balanced and obtainable simply by putting in the time. I dont think that is a bad thing, I hate the style but I avoid judging the people.
The recocurring theme in all modern MMOs that i've been able to ascertain is this:
Start at lvl 1, run on a tread mill, run through pre written task driven content, reach end game and raid to upgrade your gear so you are ready to start upgrading for your next set. Its cookie cutter game play based on a tired model. It so entrenched in the MMO genre that many insist thats the only way now. Comments like *well duh its a mmo of course it has fedex quests* speak a lot towards the modern mmo gamers expectations.
I see Darkfall as being a style of game we haven't seen since the early UO days. A style that doesn't appeal to the masses (hence Trammel & WoW) but certainly allows for a niche of players who want to feel like they're playing in a world simuation rather than just a game. I would much rather play a game where players have to band together to figure it out rather than have the game balanced so we never have to worry.
Will Darkfall be hardcore? Dam straight it looks that way.
The great thing about this game, I think, is many of us are gonna be having a blast despite the trolls. Seriously, I dont know what moms basement a lot of these clowns come from but with this game its very easy to simply look past them. They will come and rant and rave and then they will move on to their next Attention deficient indulgence. Meanwhile ill be in there bashing every skull i can and mining while i do it.
I hope they let theives break into my house. I hope they let me make trapped boxes like in the uo days. I hope this is everything they say it is because then I can stop coming here looking for a fantasy world and I wont have to listen to a bunch of people rant and rave about things like graphics which arent bad or whining about full corpse looting.
For those of you who have never encountered full corpse looting: It will create the best player crafting game since UO.
vendor buy bank guards!

I've spent the last 8 years trying to find something to replace pre-ren UO ... P2P's, F2P's ... at least 50 different ones ...
I hope Darkfall can fill that void.

Don't get carried away and get to excited before you actually try the game first.
For a start there's no UO thieving or stealth type skills in Darkfall.
All you can do is kill someone and loot there tombstone or not kill someone and don't loot their tombstone.
Or find a players tombstone and see if it has not been looted yet.
You can't drop items on the floor nor will there be any player houses with furniture or chests in them.
You can only build city's to a pre set plan in a pre determined and limited number of places, and they require a guild.
No traps either.
Also the "best crafting ever" is just really basic and rudimentary nothing special there either, and there's only a trade board that opens in your browser, no in game auction house, player run shops or hireable NPC merchants for you crafted goods either.
Also there's no NPC gaurds to call, there are only gaurds towers that shoot at people in the citys.
Bah!
I guess I should have read the FAQ a little closer.
No player housing, or player run vendors is a bite in the ASS. I could care less about an Auction Hall though, IMO the AH destroyed an aspect of MMOs that I loved ... Haggling face to face.

Spiritual, yes
Then why is it that most of the UO people who post only talk about how pre-trammel was the best days of their MMO lives? I've never met or talked to or even seen a post in a forum that had a UO player claiming that the game was better after they added carebear land to the game.
I'm guessing you never played and are just spewing random garbage because.. well.. you think it's cool. News flash bro, it just makes you look stupid to everyone.
Please elaborate on what "most" means.
Most can mean 10 people.

I was going to rip into him, but I see you already did, good work!
Yes cus every choice a company makes is ALWAYS the best even if its a mistake!
yep...
Actually ...
It was a game unlike anything that any publisher has dared to publish since. If you didn't like it, that's fine - you are with the majority. For many people, the idea of taking your chances in the wild with the possibility of another player not only killing you, but also taking all your stuff, is just crazy. Most of the today's MMO'ers are carebears, even if not by choice. In WoW, world PvP costs nothing but time and aggrivation.
There were a couple of cool things about PKs and anti-PKs in pre-trammel UO. First, there was an incredible economy. I was a miner and a blacksmith. My wares were CONSTANTLY in demand, and I wasn't even that high level (I don't think I got past 90 mining or 80 blacksmithing). I was selling average quality goods all day long because people needed affordable suits of armor that they could wear. I mean, in WoW (and every other modern MMO) you are constantly striving for the best possible gear. Imagine if instead you wanted average, affordable gear because the items could be lost. It made for a very interesting game.
The second very cool thing was the notoriety system combined with the ransom system. I used to go PK-hunting in a group of 3-4. We would have one person appear to be mining naked ... a juicy target ... and then PKs would come, try to kill them, meanwhile 4 of us were hiding nearby and BAM a dead PK. They always had great loot, and occasionally a big ransom.
It is not for everyone, but it is a lot of fun for those interested in a game like this who have been missing it since 1999.

4.8. Burning Houses
House burning is another one of those things that are not set in stone yet. But what we have in mind is that the clan that owns the area sets the burning rights. Most probably people will not be able to burn down anything as long as there is peace in the land. But if another clan takes over the land, then they might allow burning of houses for tactical reasons, or to make space for houses for their own clan members. So, yes burning will be in, but it's up to the owner of the land to allow or not. Houses cost in upkeep, and part of that upkeep might be taxed, so burning down too many houses in your land could lower your clans income.
5.76.2. More
Housing is a big thing for us. You can expect more information about it in the FAQ within short. But yes, you can lock the door. You can store items here, and you can hire guards to guard it. You can even set out traps.
About lockpicking: Still undecided. We are leaning towards no, but we may make it pickable, and have (limited) secure non-pickable chests inside the houses instead, to make things a little more interesting.

Q: What are the developers doing about housing destruction? Will it be a simple task of just hitting the house with a sword for an hour or just throwing a torch at the roof and sitting back and watching it burn, or will houses only be able to be destroyed by siege engine?
A: We never thought it was a good idea beating down a structure with a dagger. Buildings can be destroyed by deploying and using one of the many different types of siege engines we've got in the game.

Most player houses won’t be pickable, but it will be possible to use lockpicking on some clan houses and doors in certain clan owned dungeons.
lol that made my day. A quick search reveals that Kurt00 is a anti-Darfall fanatic, for the record.
WoW what an Idiot troll!
What do you play WoW? how you enjoying running that lame Raid content over and over for a crappy item thats going to be replaced in a year so you can do it all over again? And you call UO fans morons?
You play a game with souless crafting, idiot filled lame pvp with no risk what so ever and were the morons?
You actually play a MMO where the world never changes, where you don't make a bit of difference, a game design that goes against everything that a MMO was supposed to be and UO fans are the morons?
Keep playing those fake ass single player MMOs.
You're fucking twisted go away troll.
PLaying: EvE, Ryzom
Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum
its almost not worth it to come here and talk about new games anymore. If the game isn't wow the venom starts to spew beyond any level reasonable.
