I can sum it up quickly...

You should NOT give Vanguard a try unless you are willing to play a 2nd rate game that is incomplete, somewhat broken, and has a very small population.

yeah,  i got tempted back by their 'play till 31st jan for free' offer, and am currently enjoying it.

It's a bit empty, shame really.  It reminds me of eq1 (hardly suprising really) in the way your characters are free to do things, like heal someone who isn't in your group, or help someone kill a mob - I like that.  I like the fact I feel like I could be able to do great things once i've leant to play my class, like in eq1, rather than have my hands tied and 'a guardian is a guardian' feel (basically some games make me feel like there is no skill at all involved in playing your char)

I did play at release, it was slow & choppy.  In the past two years, I've upgraded my computer, and now it's not - it plays really well and looks nice.  Shame, I'm concerned for it's future, and think sony should make this free to play with micro payments (like 10p for using the teleporter or auction house, or something), atleast to get the population up to a sensible level.

I will resub at the end of jan.  Oh, and my wife saw me flying around on a pegasus, did the trial, and has just bought the game and subscribed.  If you find it too hard, you're beaten by a girl!  :D

    Noxium

Vanguard - undecided, too many toons at lvl 10-12 now :)

Erudite SK - Eq1 - Tholuxe Paells - Crystal Dawn

Other games i'm not proud of playing

I played at launch and left, resubbed a few months later and left, tried it again when SOE had their big return event for all of their games but didn't resub, and am currently playing it a couple of hours here and there thanks to the current free return program.

All the times I played previously, I walked away with the same conclusion: "it's a really good game, it just needs more time." Sadly, my current impression is: "it could have been a really good game."

For one thing, VG has never quite "felt right" as far as movement and combat are concerned. It has gotten a bit better, though. I no longer feel like I'm gliding just above the surface when I run. Jumping is still bad, and swimming is still downright  terrible.

I still encounter a lot of graphical issues, such as armor/weapons disappearing from my character and scenery elements popping in and out of existence.

The animations in some cases are a joke. In particular, if you're a caster and you engage a mob in combat, your character between spells will twirl his/her staff around in a manner that is eerily similar to the infamous "star wars kid" video. It's bad when a caster does it, but ten times worse when a monk or disciple - a master of martial arts - does the same thing.

The "new" character models are horrid looking.

I've always had audio issues with this game, in both  the technical and asthetic sense. As for the latter, I can't imagine the voiceovers could be worse - hailing a Goblin, Vulmane, or Kurasha npc is cringe-worthy. On the technical side, I set all the audio sliders to 100% except the music which I put just under 25%; doing so makes everything barely audible, i can hear the music as well as everything else. Maybe this is just an issue with my particular set-up, but it's still annoying.

I don't even know what to say about the racial mounts. In a (very) few cases they're pretty neat. The rest of them are utterly ludicrous: a giant scorpion, a giant beetle, a giant ant, a fox (for a human, no less), a freaking lobster (!?) - and how is the racial mount for Qaliathari or Mordebi humans not a camel?

They've made some adjustments to the race/class combos that were sorely needed in my opinion (it always bugged me that Kurashasa could be disciples but not monks), but I still feel they're too restrictive.

I always had high hopes for diplomacy, but it appears it'll never be more than a largely pointless minigame. Some of the diplomacy quest lines are really neat and offer some good reading material, but it's otherwise meaningless.

What finally did me in, though, was the Isle of Dawn. I rolled a goblin bloodmage, started him in the Isle, and was dumbstruck to see a bunch of Kojani and Half Elves welcoming me with open arms. Granted, if immersion is that important, you're given the option (assuming you're not a trial player, I presume) to start your character in its old racial nubland, but by doing so you'll miss out on some decent gear. I also noticed that the "playable" part of the Isle is only a small fraction of the acutal landmass, which leads me to believe they had more planned for it before they rushed it out the door.

    /rant

Basically, if I have a point, it's this:

If you're the type of person who is able to look beyond the lack of refinement and can get past some of the game's quirks, you'll find a great PvE experience in VG. The combat mechanics are good, people who are into crafting tell me VG's system is the best there is, and there is an absolute ton of content. If these things appeal to you, and the items I mentioned don't put you off, then I agree with the title of this thread.

    ^^

...Says the person who doesnt even play Vanguard. Vanguard is currently free, and worth every penny. A bigger SOE turdling there never was.

I gotta agree with the OP. I 've ben playing the game for a while now and it's amazing so far. I really really like it. The graphics aren't the best out there, but they're nice and there's lots of content and several different beginning areas, so creating alts is never boring.

Especially Isle of dawn is the easiest place to get a group, seen lots of people there all the time.

    It's a massive game.

    Cheers.

Since when is VG been free? A 14 day trial does not = FREE...

    Have I missed something?

All old VG accounts have been reactivated and will be free to play until the end of January. I think this started sometime around the 3rd or 4th week of December.

You actually get the game for free(by downloading), but still have to pay the monthly fee, wich I see as a really good bargain. :)

Ah, ok thanks for clarifying.  Wish it was the other way around, as I already have the game.  And imo the monthly fee is just not worth it.

Like open world, many classes and races which really play different. It sure isnt for everyone, but it still has qualities other MMOs lack, so I dont understand why bash someone who has a good time in it.
And sorry but hating or loving a game because of the company is just plain dumb.

I'm sorry, but I cannot agree with you that we cannot love or hate a game based on the company.

but while I am sure that Sigil had a great idea. They did have some problems in the beginning, but that was a lack of capital. I am very sorry about what happened to Sigil.

But there is a very simple fact that you seem to be ignoring or to be ignorant of:

Sony destroys games. Sony can take a good game and make it bad. I don't know why, and I don't know how, but they do. I apologize to the people that like Vanguard, but in a year or less, Sony will find a way to destroy it. They always do. Look at every other game they have run. It's only a matter of time.

It's a real shame too, Vanguard is kind of cool.

"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true — you know it, and they know it." —Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007

    WTF? No subscription fee?

    He said it right.

The Enterprise is your favorite game, and the planet eater is SOE, about to 'acquire' it.

I gotta say I was skeptical about even installing this game...as it was total crap at release. But as others have said its actually pretty good. I am having fun anyways, how long? who knows, but everything else out right now is boring to me.

It sounds ok, but I refuse to give SOE a dime so I won't be trying it.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

Dont give the trial a Run and see what you think. If you like it Reconsider. Holding a grudge agenst the vanguard team tho is silly. and they could really use the sub numbers ;p

Its really hard for me to play an mmo with no meaningfull pvp.

  • cujo603cujo603 Member UncommonPosts: 103

This game is alot more fun and refined than at launch, and if you like pve, i think you'll like Vanguard.  Its major flaw, and the one that made me stop playing, is the number of people playing.  You'll find plenty of people in the starter area to team with, its once you leave that the lack of people to play with becomes a problem.  This game needs a better method for finding teams, but more importantly a method to let people of greatly different levels to team together.  I think removing barriers to teaming for the people who do play will improve the gaming experience, and help retain players.
