With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal

Still pisses me off that you can't be apart of a crew ( I know it would be difficult to pull that off). The screens look nice though. Ill try it once its on Trial.
I think the biggest problem with this would be that everyone would want to be "Captain". How much fun would it be to play the guy that has to stand around waiting to transport the away team, sweep the corridors or cook the food? In theory, when people imagine a fully-crewed ship, it's the "other people" playing the game who would fill in the boring roles.

Actually, quite the opposite. In every game there is a Guild leader, doesnt he represent the "Captain" of the ship. It would be nice if small groups of friends played that way. I would like to be the leader personally. Probably like Defense Commander or Weapons Specialist (I don't know the ST universe so I don't know what their real positions are)

I'm surprised that this strawman argument continues to make the rounds. "Let's pick the worst possible crew position on a starship, show rightly how this would be boring, and then use that as proof that all starship crews would be boring and thus not implemented."
There's a way to design this feature that would make it fun. All it takes is a designer and an audience with the creativity to imagine it.
For one, you WOULDN'T implement the boring positions -- the same reason you don't implement the stable boy class in Fantasy MMOs. So there would be no transporter operator.
The Crew positions would be those such as Weapons Officer, Helm, Doctor, Engineer, etc. You know, the Iconic Star Trek Crew. If you have a ship, but not the Crew to man it, then NPC crew could take over.
Someone PM me when STO has Crewed ships with explorable interiors. Then I'll give it a try.

My thoughts as well. I want to be part of a crew, not a damn ship. If i wanted to be a ship, i would play EVE.
Have they ever watched Star Trek, a show about a crew working together in different roles, not 100 people in 100 different ships.
There is nothing wrong with what Cryptic is doing and actually they have gotten far more praise from the people when they took the idea away that People would play a role on a starship at a station to what it is now.. Being a Capitan
You will be able to explore your ship. And you have a crew that you put together which will be AI. You can also bring other players (friends) from another ships to yours. Its all on thier website under the Q&A.
I for one would have hated to play this game having to not be in charge of the ship... Also You are a person in the game not a ship.. The ship is just your weapon/instrument while in space.. This is not eve where you are the ship and thats it.. You can leave the ship and go to planets and what not.
The whole everyone would be on one ship and have a station wouldn't work And if they were able to throw something together in the end it would have been boring... Even if the a npc was to take over a station that wasn't being used by a real person... The environment / interaction with people would be like D&D online... you would have to also look for a "ship" to join. lol I like the openness and I will take the game as is. They have yet to do anything really wrong.
There is still a crew.. So thats there.. And you will still be a specialist of a station your just the caption of a ship. One thing I didn't understand was if they went the way of perpetual worlds.. how would you go anywhere. Who would order everyone around.. A - effing- men.
Why not let people play parts of the bridge crew, of course everyone can still have and captain their own ship, when they want to solo. Then when someone isn't playing a bridge position, get an NPC to fill the role. Then if you're playing solo, you'll have an all NPC crew.
Transporter operator would be cool. I would infiltrate the ship as just another crew member and then sabotage the transporter to materialize people in the wrong places or in the middle of a sun. How fun would that be? Or to infiltrate someone elses ship as part of a boarding party for either PvE or PvP action would be neat. Imagine fighting your way to the bridge and commendeering the ship.
What would the Weapon Officer do when you're not in combat? What would the Helm Officer do when you're in orbit? What would the Doctor do when nobody is injured? What would the Engineer do when nothing is broken? What would the Captain do in *any* scenario? Bark orders? Furthermore, how much depth and fun can you put into any of these roles without extending development tenfold?
It's both shortsighted and condescending to dismiss these concerns with a response like "All it takes is a designer and an audience with the creativity to imagine it."
Yeah the crew concept is a nice thing to dream of until you really you sit down and think about it. I can see it now, you ship and crew sit in dock because you have not found a doctor yet or better yet you are in the middle of a battle and the weapons officer has to go to dinner.
If you can't see the impractibility of those common scenarios, I can think of a few more, all of which make your crew dream just that a dream. Any developer is going to see those huge holes in your wishes and avoid it like the plague.
So dream on dreamers until reality slaps you up the side of the head........
Everyone keeps talking about the positions in the crew like they are your class as compared to other MMO's. Imagine if you could be any position on the ship and switch freely between them. So you are in orbit, let the AI take over for helm control while you take control of an away missing. Who says your position in the crew needs to remain static? I for one would enjoy messing around in engineering reconfiguring the shield harmonics every once in a while.
Still pisses me off that you can't be apart of a crew ( I know it would be difficult to pull that off). The screens look nice though. Ill try it once its on Trial.

That's pretty much exactly what they ARE doing. From the description, you can still fly in your friends' ships, or fly your own. I'm not sure about individual stations, but I'm guessing that's what they mean.
Could you imagine raiding in some people on this thread's idea of a perfect ST MMO? Three hours sitting at your station pushing the phaser button if and when the 'captain' tells you to, or hanging out in sickbay waiting for injuries? Although some people like a game like that, it'd be a far too repetitive to hold MOST human beings' attention for long. Sure, you have your guy here and there that gets complete fullfillment from MMO's doing nothing at all but crafting, and that's fine; more power to him. Generally, however, most people are going to want to be able to do many things at once.
Realisticly, designing the game around individuals holding nothing but positions on the bridge, and a guild running a ship, in my opinion just isn't going to work well.

I'm loving this game for two reasons.
Cryptic is devloping it, and they are giving the finger to the PE philosophy and the tards from STO.net.
I'm still amazed that Cryptic insists that stylized or fantastical realism is the hallmark of the Star Trek universe as stated in a recent interview. I'm still trying to think of a single movie or tv series where this was the case.
3 of those 5 were released in November last year.
I won't insult Keiths intelligence by explaining why having 'Earhtrise Screenshot' as the images alt text is a bad idea for all to see, and I'm sure he'll make the necessary alterations soon.

Why not let people play parts of the bridge crew, of course everyone can still have and captain their own ship, when they want to solo. Then when someone isn't playing a bridge position, get an NPC to fill the role. Then if you're playing solo, you'll have an all NPC crew.
