What Quests Would YOU Like to See in an MMORPG?

Whether they are called quests, missions, jobs or whatever we all want (expect) them to be in an MMORPG.  However, with no exception I have found in the games I have tried, they very best of them get monotonous, boring, tedius and generally unfulfilling after a day or two.  One soon realizes they have no depth, no meaning, no reason to be done (other than to get exp and/or loot).   I would like to hear from you gamers - especially the thoughful ones out there.  What do you WANT or HOPE for in questing in an MMORPG (regardless of the genre of the game) - both in terms of the actual mechanics the player goes through as well as content?  If you can give a simple bare bone example of what you envision, that might lead to some good discourse and good ideas.

The epic ones.  The one that will go down in history as being unique to me.  You know some master puzzle.  Finding the holy grail.  Finding a particular person who was of great importance in some massive huge world where the chance is zero to nil.  Taking out somebody that is an everyday part of the game and widely known.  Uncovering some long lost secret weapon.

Pretty much long involving epic quests that have no guarantee of being complete ever.  To me that is more fun and rewarding then doing 100 boring quests.

I'd like to see the return of the class epic weapons quests to EQ2, but I'd really also like to see perhaps a lesser epic weapon that is obtainable by soloing. Still damn near impossible and time-consuming, but soloable with maybe help from one or two others at times.

Anything that makes me have to think for once would be nice.

I would rather 50 "good" quests than 2000 meaningless quests(aka. WoW and EQ2).

A better system for what?  Please explain what you mean.

i think this is the fatal flaw of mmorpgs nowadays. my first mmorpg was Asheron's Call, and it actually has indepth and complex quests with puzzels. you could spend hours on a paticular quest, and they were always fun even if you didnt get a useful item. i had a great time because locks actually had to be picked, there were keys to be found, levers to be pulled, puzzles to be solved, and gaps/floors to jump. for me the quest aspect was really reminiscent of D&D, with actual teamwork. even tho there were no classes (AC being skill based) the quests required splitting up, teamwork, and ingenuity to complete...i always felt like i was on an adventure.

unfortunately ever since i left that game, i havent been able to find anything similar besides good old pen and paper RPGs. ive tried just about all the other games on the market, they all seem more like pointless running and a few crappy fights for a decent item. for this reason im looking forward to D&D Online. im confident turbine will encorporate that adventure feel once more, and with the advent of instanced dungeons, partys can really have a great questing experience once more. i want to be able to fight large groups of enemies like AC and D&D, and work through complex mazes and puzzles toward a goal. either a solo adventure for glory, or a team tactic based adventure in huge dungeons, i want the epic feel. questing is about the overall experience and adventure, not the items.

    -DAoC: 2 Years
    -Planetside: 6 Months

I'm so sick of the human race, wanna see society laid to waste, of the people who destroy more than they create, who live to kill, and love to hate.

The system I would like to see would essentially replace Experience level gains with questing. Each type of character I can play (race/class/profession etc...) would have its own overarching storyline, and perhaps multiple ones with multiple branches.

I would only gain advancement by completing important portions of the quests, though perhaps I can create more diversity in my character (different moves, items, skills, whatever) by subquests or by "freelancing".

I want to see my chracter become the hero or anti-hero via the actions he takes...not simply because he killed 50,000 monsters in the right order.

I think this is a very tall order, perhaps even impossible...but that's what I'd like to see.

A string of quests that ultimately follow a storyline are always fun, such as FFXI's mission system. Some nice challenging puzzles would be nice as well, something where the solution is randomly generated so that there's at least some part of the quest those handy online FAQ's cant walk everyone through.

In addition to this, (and I know folks may think I'm nuts for suggesting it) more small insignificant quests as well. Only make them comical. Something people will want to do just for the entertainment value, not for reward.

For example, maybe through some mishap, an old couple, while picking mushrooms to use in a stew, happen to add a bad one to their bushel, and the old man's wife asks you to help her husband when, as a resulf of the bad mushroom, he begins attacking the neighbors' sheep claiming they're bandit's in disguise. Just something off the top of my head, but add FMV and some comical dialogue, and something like that would be a great change of pace for the adventurer looking for a break from training.

In short, load the big quests with significance and adventure, and make the tiny ones funny enough so that people wont overlook them.
