Quotes from Tasos ......

Seems to me what this release (eh hem) really narrows down to is whether or not you believe the things Tasos has said in the past. +1 for Captain Obvious. Anyways, he is the Aventurine PR machine (eh hem). The man behind the wheel ....... driving home all that is Darkfall (Eh hem). Certain times during the development cycle, he seems to go into a cave and, well, block out the world.  Other times he has been a little more communicative.

Perhaps we should help him out a little and bring back some of his more definitive quotes for the uninformed. Again, either you believe him ........ or you don't. These quotes will help our fellow gamers make a more informed decision about the game.

I'll start out with one of my favorites ........ please link the quotes to assure reliability.

"So why don't we announce a date already? It's because there's no way we'll miss a release date and we're not going to just set a date as a goal, and either postpone or be forced to release something unfinished."

That's pretty much plain as day ...... with emphasis even. That should put to rest some of the concerns about the 22nd release (eh hem) date. Why? Simple ...... because Tasos said so.

Well he was right it was an important step... the FIRST step.

He just didn't tell us that we wouldn't arrive at the "community playtesting" step until close to 5 years later.

(Giving him the benefit of the doubt that the current Closed Beta could be counted as "community playtesting".)

    Status Of Darkfall 09-30-2003

We feel that the Darkfall community deserves an update on the state of the game, this being the last day of Septemeber. We had said that we expect to be in beta this month and there has been a lot of speculation and uncertainty about what we meant by that.

We've been in a tech beta since September 2nd, testing, working on bugs, tuning and tweaking, adding content, and building the world. We're slightly behind schedule in some areas of development, ahead of schedule in others, and we're always working on new things, the latest being an optional third person perspective that can fit in with our gameplay design. Overall we're very happy with the progress, we don't have any serious problems, and we believe that we'll be able to deliver an advanced beta build for playtesting before long.

Our idea of playtesting involves a playable Darkfall. We haven't been busting our asses all this time to deliver a world with nothing to do in it. We had that 18 months ago during pre-alpha testing as some of you know firsthand, and we don't think that that's the kind of beta everyone has been looking forward to.

What you can look forward to in the immediate future as we move forward with our closed beta, is the beta registration process for individual players and for guilds to open up, a new Darkfall website, screenshots from our current build, in-game movies, and of course our regular content updates. We'll also give the Darkfall community members the opportunity to become more actively involved within the community, and with the game.

In the meanwhile we're doing our best to get everything ready, and we'll do what we can to keep you up to date on Darkfall's progress.

Thank you for your continued support.

is there a point to this? you're just proving that 99% of trolls are dumbasses that over-read into tasos' announcements.

...unless you can link some quotes where it says "there will be a official beta/release on date X".

So we were wrong assuming the announcement given in 2004 stating that "public beta is near" would occur at some point over the course of the next four years?

    What were we thinking?

    Darkfall Interview

Kjetil Helland: For good game performance, you should have a PIII-800 and a GeForce1-2 or ATI Radeon. The game engine will also take advantage of the latest graphics cards that are coming out, like the GeForce3 or the upcoming ATI 8500. So if you have one of those, then the game will look stunning.

This is when they were still Razorwax, even in 2001 they said they had been planning it for 6 years (1995). You can read the rest here ...

There is a reason why that quote is not from Tasos ...

Hint : it has everything to do with the RazorWax being responsible for DarkFall, this got changed at some point 2003 Aventurine took over and has litle to do with the  game of today..

    Development history

    * On August 29, 2001, Razorwax announced the development of Darkfall and launched its official website. [10] The Razorwax development team consisted of five members:

o Claus Grovdal (Lead Design and Producer)

o Ricki Sickenger (Lead Tools and Game Logic Programmer)

    o Henning Ludvigsen (Art Director)

o Kjetil Helland (Lead 3D/Client Programmer)

o Erik Sperling Johansen (Lead Server Programmer)

    * In October 2002, Aventurine S.A. was founded in Greece. The Razorwax team was integrated into Aventurine, and five other developers from Norway were hired into the company.[11] When the Razorwax team and the Aventurine team had their first meeting in Athens, a member of one of the teams joked that Razorwax should relocate from Norway to Greece due to the lower taxes and cost of living in Greece. Eventually, the two teams realized that this idea actually made very good business sense,[12] and by December 2002,[13] the relocation of Razorwax was finalized. In the same year beta was announced and sign ups began. After 6 months sign ups were closed and the original declaration of closed beta was retracted. To this day claims persist that beta is "just around the corner".

    * In September 2005 the signup for the closed clan beta began. But the planned beta of Q4 2005 was cancelled. Developers have stated that before the beta, they would release a gameplay video [14], which they did in February 2006.

    * Aventurine did not have a playable version of Darkfall available at E³ 2006, an offline demo was presented instead. In June 2006, just after E³, the Darkfall team started releasing weekly Questions and Answers through Warcry, in order to help newcomers to the community.

    * An announcement on July 11, 2006 stated that preparations are still being made to begin beta.[15]

    * An interview with the developers on August 25, 2006 indicates that Aventurine does not have a publisher for Darkfall, and has considered the possibility of self-publishing the game.[16]

    * On January 17, 2007, Aventurine announced that a fully functional and stable beta build is running on remote servers and that the game is being shown to prospective partners, distributors, publishers, technology providers, etc.[17]

    * On January 30, 2007, Aventurine release a video containing about one minute of ingame footage, showing melee combat, mounts (including mounted combat), spellcasting and naval combat.[18] The developers have stated that the combat will be similar to that of Mount and Blade.[19]

    * On May 31, 2007, Aventurine's 9th Developer Journal responded to some of the recent beta inquiries, and announced that their internal target date for beta is Summer '07. In addition, the main Darkfall site has continued to see regular updates to its Race, Monster, and Lands sections. Skepticism still surrounds the announcement due to the previously missed Beta deadlines however.[20]

    * On August 2, 2007, Aventurine stated that although the game is technically ready for beta, beta will not start until negotiations with possible publishers are completed [21]

    * On September 13, 2007, Updated public beta information added to Darkfalls forums stating "Solo player beta applications will be taken soon. Please watch the news forums for this." [22]

    * On February 22, 2008, they released a new "Location Test Video" depicting several locations in the game."For today's update we put together a medley of location test videos, from in and around clan cities and racial outposts."[23]

whats the point, in that is a noticable steady progress towards release visible...

If you had presented some history for example :

-the project was put on hold for 2003 - 2006

-the company disbanded in 2005 ,

-or the team changed 4 times in 4 years entirely through the development ..

But no, the quotes present a stable team working for years together to make their vision of their MMO becoming true ..

This smacks of historical revisionism and wishful thinking by current supporters who had obviously never even heard of the game in 2002/3.

Razorwax announced they had found a publisher called Aventurine for Darkfall in December of 2002, and that they would finish the development of the game jointly in Greece for its predicted 2003 release date.

As you can see from the 2003 quote, Tasos is saying the game will be going into public beta testing soon, that was 9 months after Razorwax "merged" with Aventurine.

There was no "new" game at that stage, Tasos was talking about Razorwax's Darkfall, its was still the same game, he even says:

"We had that 18 months ago during pre-alpha testing as some of you know firsthand,"

He's talking about the Alpha version of Darkfall Razorwax was testing before in Norway, Aventurine was set to publish this finished version of Darkfall for its 2003 launch.

All this talk of new games and Darkfall being scraped only started many years later around 2005, people like myself who actually followed the game since 2001 know the truth.

Tasos has been saying that the game was feature complete and currently in internal testing, and ready for public beta and release soon for 6 years.

Whether or not the game was scraped and started again or they decided to not launch but improve the game instead in 2003, the fact remains, Tasos and Aventurine were claiming that Darkfall public beta would be starting soon and the game was set to launch in 2003.

Now recently Tasos has fully white washed the development history by claiming development of Darkfall started in 2003 when in reality Razorwax was formed and started development on Darkfall in 2000.

It was merely a response to one of the above posters that kindly inquired about beta dates that didn't work out as planned.

Most of which were statements made by Tasos, which, if you check my original post is what this thread is about.

Nothing more ....... Nothing less ......

Man there are some really dedicated trolls.  I hope you guys are in my guild when DF launches.  I could use some no-lifers to defend my city around the clock.

That damn Tasos, what is wrong with him following the game design standard and saything things that end up changing.  Why doesn't he just use his crystal ball?  I bet he will keep conforming to the MMORPG standard and delay again.  I mean it is only their first offical release date, we have to wait until at least the third to believe it.

Your mind is like a parachute, it's only useful when it's open.
Don't forget, you can use the block function on trolls.

... and then they wonder why Tasos just stopped posting updates.
