I am waiting on a copy to get back into the game, but form what I can tell, they've made it immensely easier to get things done then back in the day. It depends on how long you're willing to put into it to get into the good stuff. You start off with storyline missions, and just little quests in towns, and everything gets progressively harder, and it can probably take a year or two if dedicated to get through all the story missions and get to max level and all that. Also, it's incredibly hard to solo after the first little bit (like level 15 would be the farthest I would ever solo, if forced) and most of the game requires grouping to level up quickly, or do the story or other "boss" type fights throughout the game.

Not that there aren't incredibly hard fights for the soloist in there as well, though. Also, most of the game is grinding in parties on similar looking monsters over and over,  but they've added more things to do otherwise as you level. Though, to a degree, I would say the partying is a lot of the fun, as it gives you time to get to know the people in your party, and make friends, if you're so inclined.

The job system is one of the best systems in any MMO, though. You can switch between any job whenever you want at your mog house (which is your house, entirely customizable with furniture and stuff) and level them all up to max level separately if you want, and the Main/Sub job system is awesome also, since you can use the skills, armor and weapons, etc., of your main job, while also using some skills, and increased stats, etc., from another secondary job as well. You start off with base jobs like warrior, thief, black, white mage, etc., and can do quests later to get advanced jobs such as Dragoon, Ninja, Samurai,  Dancer, etc., which is cool.

Also, this game has oneof the best atmospheres of any MMO on the market... actually, probably THE best. It's what I miss most about the game after not playing for a few years. Graphics are awesome, etc., etc.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents. I'm sure I missed stuff, but basically, yeah, if you hate games that takes a long time to progress, and that you can't do on your own, it may not be for you, but the job system, epic storyline, atmosphere, and other cool stuff you'll most likely enjoy.

    Sounds pretty good actually.

One question though: when you mention groups, you mean you need big groups or would a duo solve it?

    NEEEEEEED

And even in a linkshell it can take mroe time waiting to get a group going then you actually spend getting XP...

and if the healer, or anyone really, drops, you are back to square one LFM.

I loved this game till I got to 15... don't get me wrong, I like to group, but I like to solo while waiting for a group or if I only have an hour to kill, not an hour to LFG to play for 30 mins till someone drops, then start over.

Also its graphically boring as dirt, everyone of the same level has the exact same equipent that is "best" for that level tier, and all the enemies are different color versions of weaker lowbie enemies.

And the Japanese having the game  a year before we did meant the economy was fucked up from the gate.

With an alliance you can have up to 18 people fight a mob at once. Some of the hardest mobs in the game take a full alliance; some even take more than 18 and you cycle through other players outside the alliance. Two, 3, 4 people is really all you need to do most crap. If those people aren't at 75 you might need a few more. Rarely outside of exp parties to you really need a full group of 6 people.

Ah well, doesn't sound like a game for me then...

I mean, it's not that I dislike big groups, hell no, most of my greatest times in games have been with incredibly large groups.

But I do dislike NEEDING such a group at all times 'cus, simply put, it's impractical and my play time is quite limited.

Just a shame, this seemed like a cool game overall...

There's nothing dirty about this game. It's squeaky clean. :)
