I played FF for over a year. At first I loved this game. Lots of quest, a great story line and the ppl, (well most of them) where very helpful. But what made me leave was the problem of finding a party to lvl. At lvl 50 the lvling slowed down so bad it was painfull. Having to "uncap" you lvl every 5 lvl's after lvl 50 was the worse thing I've ever seen. This game has many good points, and I would have any of my friends try it. But here is my top 5 things I hate about FF. 1. Around lvl 20 you NEED to have a party to lvl at any rate, and after lvl 50 an Even Match will own you. 2. You lose 10% of you XP if you die, and after lvl 51 10k to lvl and only getting around 200-250xp a kill hurts. 3. Gil (money) is hard to get, i spent more time farming, hunting ect. then i did lvling 4. Almost any quest that you do to get armor you need a party for, or a high lvl friend, (if armor is lvl 20 then you should be able to get it a lvl 20 solo) 5. There are some jobs you NEED in a party to make it work well, PLD for one, (WAR works untill lvl 30 or so) NIN can be used to but are just as hard to find. A WHM is also important but they at easy to find around lvl 30ish but other lvls it can be hard.
There you go, i'm sure some will agree and disagree. This is only my views on the game.

Now remember to always put off till tomorrow what you can do today... Oh wait a minute that didn't come out right!
The game is extremely involved. You must spend a lot of time on it to get anywhere. You must know what you're doing to make money, to level classes, to get parties to finish missions, quests, etc... The problem is learning the techniques to advance yourself in the game. Farming only goes so far. You have to learn how to farm, and what to farm, at any given time to stay on top of the current market. Sometimes it's just plain dumb luck stumbling onto something that nobody has sploofed all over the web with info on how to make money off it. The game has an Auction system in it, which is very diverse, but is at the same time very exploitable. "Gil farmers" tend to camp the most necessary items from Notorious Monsters, increasing their value. Since it's only coming from one source they can control the value - where as if from multiple sources, people vary their prices to sell it faster.
That's the one major beef I have with XI right now. Is the exploiting of items and cash for money IRL. I'm hoping SquareEnix will take into consideration the damage on the economy these people are doing. On the other hand, if they want to be a loser and just farm all day long and have no life what-so-ever, than that's their perogative.
Leveling can be very difficult. Not only do you need decent gear, or your peers will look down on you, but you need to find the right people to level with. Generally, the lower the level, the newer the players are going to be with that class. Finding a decent party can be difficult and frustrating. The best way to avoid this is to join with a bunch of players - say in a linkshell - and static with them. Static simply means no one levels a certain class without the others, and they set times to do so. The easiest way to find the best parties is by looking at the rank of any player you're wishing to join. The higher the rank of the player, the more they'll know about the game, and the better the party will be. Also, level more than one class!! If you're going to stick with one class, that's great, but don't single out any others. Take advantage of the diversity of the game and play other classes, even if you have the slightest interest in them. You may very well find out that you can do things you can't do with your first choice. Some of the best classes to level first to increase your cash flow and party acceptance I would say are White Mage, Black Mage, Thief, and Bard.
chrisohki touched on a few specific subjects, one of which I'd like to reitterate. Parties consist of 6 players, and primary classes, true. Finding these specific classes can be difficult sometimes, as people tend to do more than just level: they switch jobs, and god forbid, log off. Sometimes leveling just isn't an option. That's why you can quest, farm, craft, mission, or explore while you have your party flag up. Level 55 is actually a very common level now. I can see over 200 players on at any given time from level 52-58. However, I do play on one of the most populated servers, which is Fairy. From what I gather, most servers are generally the same, with little difference in population with exception of European, North American, and Japanese primary influence. Also, there are multiple classes that can fill in for others, and sub classes as well. Being diverse is what this game is about, learn to use it to your advantage. Not only do you need to level with others, as solo'ing is near impossible without the best gear, and only certain classes may do so - such as Beastmasters, but you must understand each class and it's purpose, function, and ability. Creating parties is easy if you know what you can work with.
Pro's -
The game has the best graphics of any other game.
The music is award winning, as Final Fantasy's have carried on through tradition.
The quest and mission storylines are outstanding and believable.
The detail of little things is noticable.
The combat system is refreshing and powerful, and interlinks each class in some, way, shape or form into it; giving each class purpose, and not excluding any.
Con's -
Movement and controls can be awkward at first, and take some getting used to.
The economy is easily exploitable.
Time consumption is an all time high to get things done.
Item/equipment options can be limited (especially regarding costs of items). [This is slowly being upgraded in newer patches releasing more items.]
The targeting system is primative yet, and takes severe practice.
Crafting systems are extremely challenging and expensive.
By the way, my thoughts on other MMORPG's are:
Everquest: too realistic, leaves little room for imagination, too involved, too expansive, too lame.
Dark Age of Camelot: too imbalanced between realms and classes, too zerg-related.
Ultima Online: (at the time I quit) too connection reliant, too easily hackable.
Other games I have too little experience with to give an accurate opinion, but I have beta'd Lineage 2, GuildWars, and Star Wars Galaxies

Wow, you hit almost everything right on the head there. I agree with most things you said about the game, even the pros and cons. The only thing I can add is about the partying, I know a PLD or NIN can tank in the game, and a WAR as well. I think the biggest problem i had is at the time i decieded to leave was after I started a new job and found myself only able to play in the morning hrs. Everyone was either to tired to party, or was only one for a hr or so and then had to log. I also wanted to say is you are very right about the AH system. The ppl that camp the NM are insain! And I'm pretty sure that there are many bots out there camping them. I know Square has done a good job about keeping cheating down and hacking at a min. but this is something they will have to look at for future patches.
Now remember to always put off till tomorrow what you can do today... Oh wait a minute that didn't come out right!
I think it is a good game. I find it very interesting and enjoy playing even thought it takes a while to level up. I like the graphics, but I do not remember the music on the fields, probably because I was having to much fun playing the game that I have never noticed the music anyway, unless there isn't any.

I agree with everything that was said about the pros and cons. I also want to say that having a strong guild/LS to support you is the key to overall enjoyment if you can get pass the cons. It goes a long way to have people there for you to provide help, support and just plain ol company.

I played FFXI for a while, it was a very fun game. I absolutely LOVED the shared servers (with Japan) I loved playing with Japanese people they where so nice to me. I miss them.
The game is great in general, the grind isn't too bad (*cough Lineage II cough*).
I reccomend this game.

As you guys said before there are some things that the could have done bette but still I think it's the best MMORPG out there. Well, I havn't played EQ2 but if you remove EQ2 it's the best MMORPG today. And it have been for 2 years now. I've done 2 characters and I loved to play with both of them very much!
FFXI is the MMORPG och them all. Fact is that it has been nominated for mest MMORPG and so it is. But it is very complicated and some people don't understand the game and quit before reaching lv 15.
