For some reason I went to Goldshire (starting area for Alliance) last night looking for the Darkmoon Faire (it happened to be in Thunderbluff), and was surprised to see a few people questing. I'm not saying Goldshire was crowed by any means, but there were players there none-the-less.
Besides, with the XP increases from 1-60 you'll be at the upper levels in no time.
You could also try the trial version before you purchase as well.

Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
PvP : Stormscale or Al'Akir
PVE: Dragonblight or Azjul Nerub
are very good EU choices.
I would recommend Alliance to start with. Servers have on all levels more than enough players.
On weekends some queus but nothing to worry about.
Uh do NOT go to a reccomended or new server it's going to be empty, mainly those are Xfer servers and stay dead.
Well thanks for the replies folks, going to pick the game up today and givie it a bash.
just do it, you wont likely regret it.

I started playing WoW in November 2007 and havent looked back. There were never a shortage of players at any lvl back then, and ill guess there wont be now either because of a recently released expansion pack. Im closing in on my 10th anniversary as a MMO player, and have to say WoW is a fantastic game, and easily one of the most fun MMOs ive ever played.
What the hells is it with some of you advising starting Alliance? It doesn't flippin' matter if you're Horde or Alliance. Whether its respectful people or horrible people, there's a good chunk of those on both sides. PvP wise? Differs between Battlegroups. PvE/Raid-wise, it doesn't matter which side... there's a good balance on each end.
Frankly after leveling an Alliance toon to 60, i found it less exciting than leveling a toon 1-60 on Horde. How's that for your counter to advising people to go Alliance.
Yes you will and server doesn't make that much of a difference. My server has been around since launch, is not a high pop server, only medium and there are always people around. I sell stuff on the auction house like low level profession mats and plans, low level weapons and armor, low level food etc all the time. Obviously there are still a lot of alts being made and a lot of new low level characters being played. You may have a little trouble finding groups for instances, but no more than your average MMO and you can solo much of the content so whenever you can't find a group you can still progress.
