It won't happen. Everyone is talking like 300K beta sign ups is something monumental for this industry. Compared with current games release and under development 300K is on the low side.
I would be shocked if more then 20% of those actually pre-ordered. Signing up for beta and paying out for an undelivered product early are two completely different things.

Even if it did happen they could just take the money they made and go buy more servers to support it, and they would roll out their staged release. Just what I think they would do...
It looks to me like Darkfall is trying to follow how Eve is working out. They started out slow and consistently added more and more subscriptions over the months. For such a small company they will be overwhelmed with too many players at once. If they can launch with all the core players that really want to play the game and will be much more forgiving, and fix the early bugs and performance problems, they should do well. As long as performance and stability are good and they launch with what they promised, Darkfall should be in good shape.
Well, when 300k people preorder, they will be more equipped to handle that amount of players than they are right now. At least, they will have a plan to accomodate that many players. It's likely that they will emply a staged release, or perhaps they will use this extra month/the stress tests to ready themselves to accept that many players right off the bat at launch.

Just think how many of those 300k beta sign ups are actually people signing up 2, 3 or even 4 times. This isn't out of the question, I've been guilty of doing it before (with success).

i am registered, so i will remove my preorder for the other 299,999 players who will preorder. My one slot in the trial will save the server!
Wont happen i would be surprised if they broke 40k pre-orders

Exactly my thoughts. Not to mention I don't buy MMO's unless I am in their beta's anymore because of all the crappy MMO's produced.
Since I wasn't invited to the beta for this I won't be ordering PRE or Regular lol.

What happens when Aventurine magically transforms all ~300,000 freeloading beta hopefuls into ~300,000 paying customers?
Pigs fly, Hell freezes over, and Tasos quits this small company to become the most succesful PR man alive.

I even admit I have 2 DF beta sign ups.
