I'll have to agree with you, I'll have to try both. I love the Star Trek world but hate all the preachy moral of the story stuff that comes with ST, but does have more grey areas. Where as Star Wars has a very clear conflict area but is much lighter hearted and designed to be just fun and existing, less geeky more fun.... so both appeal to me. I must say I am more of a Star Wars fan than Star Trek because well it's just better at the end of the day LMAO!
Eve rocks! If you don't like it your a a 12 year old, or have the mental age of one, with the attention span of a goldfish! We are so glad your not screwing up the greatest MMORPG to date! Or of course you just might not like this kind of game ;D ...weirdos!
Its really simple for me. I love both franchises. Both games look interesting but TOR is thinking about doing the 1 thing I cannot support. Micro Tranactions for in game items for real money.
So I have dropped ToR from my list completely.
I am focusing completely on STO at the moment. If they fail I'm out of the MMO gaming scene for a long while. I wouldn't even be considering STO if it wasn't Star Trek.
I'm sick of the MMO dev's giving us the shaft making us pay for products that are unfinished.
But, STO might get an interesting skillsystem and Im also curious about how they will implement exploring worlds. On the downside, ST always looked to neat and clean to me.
SWTOR has Bioware. Im really curious if they will be able to create a similar experience story wise as in KOTOR and Baldurs Gate.
Hm, basically it comes down to not knowing much for certain yet and unknown release dates. Meh.
I think Star Trek fans, sci fi fans, ex swg fans will go to STO first as I believe that STO will most likely launch before TOR. I think a lot of people (like myself) will get their sci fi fix with STO until TOR launches and STO will lose a bunch of subscriptions to TOR. I also think anyone who played the KOTOR games will be attracted to TOR and Bioware is much more respected than Cryptic is as a whole. Also TONS of WoW players are getting very bored of WoW and are starting to quit so these two games will be recipiants of those.
Also there is the fact that every Star Trek game that has come out before has been utterly BAD. Dont get me wrong there's been some stinker Star Wars titles too but EVERY Star Trek game to date has been horrible. It's like the stigma of movies to video games being bad. That carries over.
So yeah overall I think TOR will end up being the winner of these two titles as far as number of people playing.
I don't remember anyone saying what the skill system would be like yet for TOR. All I got is that they said they will not be using the standard points system like in other MMOs.
James: Our leveling system does use the classic experience point type leveling system. There are some innovations that we working on, but we can't talk about it.
Same thing goes for world openness, they said this
James: Because it's an MMO and players play MMOs because they want to feel part of a vast world with lots of other players, you can't make too heavy use of instancing, or you'll take that feeling away. That's something we're very aware of.
That and the game engine allows for streaming of content with no loading screens...Hero Engine
Seamless World and Instances
Utilizing a room visualization system, an area can contain an unlimited number of rooms. Rooms can in turn be set to render or not render adjacent rooms, greatly saving on render times and costs.
Transitional pieces can then be utilized to allow large scale texture bank swaps as a player exits one area and enters another. This powerful and flexible system delivers stellar performance and the appearance of a seamless world.
This capability could allow ground to space flight, with no loading screens
TOR will be a pretty innovative MMO technology wise and feature wise. I really don't think you can compare it to anything currently, or still in the pipeline. Yes there will be PvP, They talked about RvR but I'm not sure if you will see it, maybe for space. yes there will be crafting, yes there may be some form of housing, yes there will be some professions other than Jedi/Sith . It's ok if you like STO, but no need to make stuff up.
I like both IPs equally, but STO will be a mediocre game at best. All we read and see shows it. Instancing, action heavy, narrow in scope. Cryptic shows zero genius in making STO special in any way, whereas SWTOR shapes up pretty well atm. I take any bet SWTOR will beat STO hands down. Bioware has at least some kind of vision and dares to make something really innovative, while Cryptic's STO and Champion are just different versions of CoH.

"Will I be able to play on the Light or Dark side of the Force?
Yes, during character selection you will align with the Republic or the Sith Empire. In addition, throughout the game you will also be faced with many decisions which can change your path down the Light or Dark side of the Force."
I refuse to align with anyone but the Hutt Syndicate.

They both lack Han Solo.

Oh and they dont have Han Solo.
After looking at some of the latest crappy shots of the TOR, I have to say STO is pulling away in the lead as the game I'll be playing.
Currently Playing: World of Warcraft
Personally I'll be playing both. I like what both games are trying to do and wish them both success.

You mean which game is more likely to disappoint? tough call. I'm going to have to say Trekkies, since the SW fans have already been burned.
