I recently gave WoW a miss as I didnt have near enough time to commit to it, but still wanted to play something just as easy to play, and a friend mentioned Runes of Magic ( sort of WoW clone). I decided to get it ago and I am actualyl enjoying it., I can play for small periods of time and I am getting somewhere with my char, so I am happy, it is the usual free to play but with a shop to buy bits and pieces, but the shop doesnt seem to have anything that interests me anyways and there is so much in game loot etc to be had that unless you want to be a power gamer there isnt really a need to buy from the game shop.
I wasnt a big WoW fan either, I played it due to time restraints I couldnt get a char in my favorite game EQ1 and then Eq2 as alot of time was needed to level. But WoW i was leveling my toons from 1 to 70 in 5 days and could do some end game on and off when my time awaay from my business allowed me.
But since work has gotten alot busier for me, I now decided to close my WoW account since I wasnt getting my $$ value out of it, But with Runes of Magic, I can understand the one race only, but I always played humans anyways LOL... So that didnt bother me very much, But I do enjoy this F2P MMO, the dual class system is interesting too. I been leveling a Priest/Mage class adn I been enjoying it alot. But there is alot of class crossing you can look into and most are alot of fun to play. Also in my short time on Runes, I have noticed the devs of this game has borrowed (hehe) ideas from WoW, Eq1 and 2, Lotro and Diablo in the game mechanics which is most of the good things I liked in all those games.
But all in all, if you are looking for alot of different races, this will not be a game for you. But hey F2P only need to waste some time Downloading it to try, and uninstall if ya hate it.
As an Australian, It's not just a Simple Download, it's leaving me computer on for at least 1 day straight, and a decent % of my monthly download quota.
Im reeally turned off by the only 1 race thing though...
Fair nuff mate, As i mentioned it wil be either you like the ideas or not.
I too am Australian, Adelaide myself. I always check my ISP's list of downloads before downloading from anywhere else. I am a Bigpond user and I find 90% of the files I need from there Download sections @ bigponid games. Which in turn does not count to my monthly quota. Only took me 2 1/2 hours on ADSL to grab the file as well. I had it downloading in the back ground whilst Iw as working (works from home).
But I can understand only having one race can be a trn off to some. I myself dont really care if I have pointy ears or not.
Well from the few details your gave I would have to suggest perfect world. It has by far the best character customization that I have seen and it is fantasy.
Didn't like it, the character customization felt pretty limited, no matter how much you changed your appearance you were either going to be a furry, a lolicatgirl or an ugly androgynous elf-like thing.
But I put that aside, and the community decided for me, that I shouldn't play it.
It was like playing an mmorpg with a bunch of brick walls.
I don't really know then from what you put that was the best I could do sorry. If you put more it would help, but as you said you weren't going to I don't really think that I can help you more.
Fine then, if you want what someone else likes, you should play Guild Wars. It's not free, but you should play it anyway.
If free is a sticking point, try a doubloon server on Puzzle Pirates. If you dislike it, it won't be for the same reasons that you dislike other games.

I dunno, I guess teh customization sucks if you play the beast races....
But the other ones man....at one point I made a solid black character with a series of neato white dots on his forehead. I found Perfect World to have a character creator second ONLY to CoH/CoV. Any game that can come even measurably close to CoH in customization is impressive to me.
That said, I'd give CoH a whirl. I know it isn't fantasy...but, screw it. Nothing else has worked for you. In the very least, you'll have all the customization you could ever hope for in a game. I can honestly say that, even if they DIDN'T have a free trial (which they do), the game is worth the 30 some-odd bucks just to make a few characters on. Even if you never play a single one. Ever. Still totally worth it.
If you MUST have fantasy (and free, I know CoH isn't free...)....and you HATE PW.....then I'd probably give one of these games a go. I'll make a tag beside the ones which are either HEAVILY asian or cell shaded.
1: Shayia
2: DOMO "j" (thats the tag)
3: Hero "j" (not cell-shaded, though)
4: Dungeon Runners (for some old school hack and slash yummy)
5: Ryzom (I think its back up again, yay!)
I could name more....just tell me if you need me too. I've tried almost every MMO ever made at this point. I'd rank Shayia and DOMO up there in my taste. Then again, I'd also place Perfect World on top...given its quality and...free-ness. None of those games really have a ton of character customization....
.....except DOMO. Domo doesn't have "looks" creation, but it does have a really deep multi-classing system that pretty much rocked my socks off for a long while there. I quit playing it to play CoH again (its my game of choice, I can't help it)
Ryzom isn't free anymore. They set up their billing and the prices are listed on their forums already. You can find the pricing list HERE.
If you don't like any of the games Gishgeron suggest then I think you need to list all of the games you have played so people don't waste their time mentioning and/or describing a game you have already played.
If you still don't find one after all of the replies in this thread then you need to look for a game yourself. Use these websites: freemmmogamer, gameogre and mmohub. They are the best websites to find a game. If you still can't find one after searching those sites then MMOs are not for you at the moment.

Perhaps it would help if you gave some information about what sort of games you like?
Nope.
I've done that 3 times now.
Just tell me what free mmo I should play and why I should...

looking at the site, there is only 1 playable race, which is a huge negative for me.
I also wasn't a fan of WoW.
Could you change my mind about this?

That was accualy the last MMO I tried.

Basically, whenever I say "this is what I like" I get reccomended a bunch of mmo's (always the same ones) and I don't like them.
So I've decided to just go on what other people like.
Sorry if it comes off rude or harsh, but i'm just trying something different.

I enjoyed Guildwars, But it gets a little stale after being max level for over a year.
I am however waiting for more information on Guildwars 2, so far its sounding pretty good.
as for Puzzle Pirates, I've played it, but I've never been very good at puzzles, so my lifetime in that was a very short one.
