How do you buy a used mmo?

I keep finding a lot of used MMO games on ebay, how will they work if their serial numbers are already used for accounts?

If the serial numbers have already been used to create an account then the game disks themselves are worthless.
Lots of people out there are depending on the stupidity of others to make a quick buck.
One of the local stores has opened MMO titles for sale.
they give you the account details when you buy it off of them.
its a very silly way to buy MMO's as you can get completely screwed over if they dont give you the right information (or try and take their account back). MMO's are pretty cheap atm (aside from WAR and AoC) so i dont see why anyone would buy 2ndhand
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
alot of people sell the disk for the same price and hope to trick people, I got a "New" game off amazon with the CD key used. I got a refund and got the keep the disk :P

If price lets say for 2nd hand is 10 dollars, most of mmo's that are out for a while are free to dl or for 10 dollars in shops so why would you buy a second hand game?
Oh i understand a you wanne buy a game from someone so you have a fully equipped character and be uber right away when logging in hahaha.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
I even know some game friends who have done that and i end friendship becouse they trick people in buy there account and get money but with false info.

You mean they are selling just the game discs? If that is the case then don't even bother.
I've seen WoW & SWG accounts sell for hundreds of dollars, but that is the whole account, not just the discs.
No, I don't want to buy some guy's character. What I meant was buying the actual game. I've seen some people post a used AoC copy for a starting bid of around $5 and even less. These prices are less than any digital download out there. I also bought Tabula Rasa brand new for $2.25 off of ebay in november so this is what made me hunt for other mmos who i might buy for dirt cheap.

the only way you can "buy" a used MMO is to buy the account information from the owner, as once its installed and registered the discs themselves contain client software only, the key has already been used. Make sure you investigate the game you wish to play t see if account transfers are aloud and the correct procedur to do so.
PS, once you purchse the account you will start paying for access from day one, no free 30 days.
I've gotten a few MMO's with the "Used" condition status on them off of eBay and Amazon before, not with the intent on getting a free leveled character but in order to get a game really cheaply.....EVERY time I sent the seller a private message asking if the serial had been used and they said "no" to me, I have always gotten a brand new, never used game really cheap. Most recently I got AoC for about $5.00...never used, but it had the "used" or "been opened" condition under them. Always ask if the game has been used before....dont buy a game already registered to someone else, they can easily get the account back and leave you in the dust. Do ask before buying by sending the seller a private message....you will have a copy of how they reply to your question CC: e-mailed back to you (say, from ebay or amazon) and you can use that as proof against them if they sell you a faulty product and get your money back...especially if paying buy PayPal....I've never had a problem in the past buying these. I think they can sell them as used because a lot of places cut open the box checking its content....some people do try to sell a "used" account and those items should never be trusted.
