Well, I'd say that Aventurine is acting like many companies and businesses after the financial crisis - controlling the market by any means necessary. That means that there is no room for small companies, such as Aventurine, to spread freely into the open market. Today's era of capitalism is more about controlling the supply, and not merely the demand for the product. They realize they can satisfy only a niche of MMO players, not only because the game differs from typical themepark MMOs, but mainly because they don't have the capacity to distribute it and operate it on a massive scale. So I think Aventurine is acting rationally and responsibly given the situation.
Let me translate this for everyone, as it explains the situation perfectly.
Aventurine has run out of money and can't afford a full scale, professional launch, its just not in the budget.

Then they wouldn't postpone the release? If it was a money issue they would have done as the others do, hype it up into oblivion and hope for boxsales.

First off they had no intention to go to ADW in the first place, they where presuaded to go. And second I have seen that video and it does not put the game in a very good light....you would think they could atleast have something to show that looks better than that.
First off they needed there as hoster and organizers of the ESCW Athens Masters 2008 ..
Aventurine hasn't done it for the first time. They officially responsible for the ESCW events for greece for a long time..
Maybe this year they thought its a bad timing cause of the DarkFall plans ..but normally they like to promote e-sports ...
Second it was a big opportunity to get locally known beside the usual gaming community because the event took place in the middle of the Athens town and not in some hidden place as meeting of game nerds..
They didn't planned to talk about to their DarkFall community , we found about the event ourselves and some community members organized to cover the event with video ..
And the most important the majority you will ask will say that he prefers that video over the gameplay video ..so you not like it, must be something very subjective ..the numbers talk another speech because the hype went up and not down ..

You got it wrong. They do want a huge following but not at the release. When they see their game is running well and most players who were initial fans stuck (=solid fanbase), they can concentrate on getting more players and more servers. But if the release will be a big screw up due too many people trying to download the game and therefore making the servers go down, the game will be pronounced a failure and be forgotten after a few weeks.
False.
I recall WOW did not have a very good launch or WAR. They seem to be doing just fine.
What about VG? VG had a horrific launch and it doesn't look they will ever recover.
WoW made it big because it's simplistic, no hefty design choices, limited amounts of long travel, easy combat combined with a good story, a dash of humor, the ability to run on your grandmother's computer and commercials featuring Mr. T, William Shatner, Verne Troyer and Ozzie Ozbourne and a South Park episode dedicated to WoW and you have a hit.
WAR isn't big. It's just the first MMO to hit average in a while.
What do any of us get if the game never launches or launches horribly?
Some payback for the many years the obnoxious Darkfall fanboys have been polluting every major MMO forum.
So that's the biggest goal? Forum "revenge"?
It's sad that you would wish for a group of people to fail, possibly losing their employment and income just because the fans of the game are excited. On top of that, we, the players, will lose the chance to experience something different and possibly grand, all just so you can reach some sort of forum Karma.

They do understand of course that they don't have to let every single player that petitioned for "the trial" in the game in order to stress test the servers right? I mean they could just take all the names place them in a jar (so to speak) and start pulling names out until the required number has been reached give them the beta key, download client, whatever, let them play lift the notorious NDA of course so that some worthwhile reviews can be made then repeat the process......or am i missing anything?

"Excited" is one way of putting it. Behaving smug and insulting towards everyone not considering pre Trammel UO as paradise would be a more accurate description though.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for more diversity in the MMO market. It's the attitude of Darkfall's fanboys that puts me off and that's not game related. Was the same about Vanguard really and, although small in number, Dark and Light.

Just the fanboys? How about the trolls which ruin every thread they can? It's the 'sceptics' that are the fuel on the fire. If you behave like a tard you will be treated like one.

The ball got dropped on Publisher partnering as this should have been setup 9 months ago for support. Again things like this occur when you have game developers trying to run the business side of things. They should have hired an operational management team to run the front end of the business and that would have let them do what they are suppose to do and bring the game to gold release standard.
So now launch will drag out for weeks and customer service will be in the Sh!t hole for months as they will get off to a bad start and north America will not see it before the summer if at all. Most likely if they are lucky thay might have some one come in a buy the game outright to keep it going. Pray to god it is not Sony.
If Tasos wants demand and hype to go down all he needs to do is let someone do a review of the game.
A fraps, stream of the game would do this also. IMO.
Its a catch-22 for him. He does not really want the hype to go down (no company wants that). But he can't handle the load that a real OB would create.
I don't understand both of you, he (well the compnany) gave a lengthy gameplay trailer to the public ..but instead of the hype to go down , the forum and beta registrations went up and break new records..
They didn't planned that but a fan captured there ADW presentation..and here again same thing..instead of people loosing interest after watching the video the hype continued.
So why you think if they let review or produce a fraps the game will get dehyped ?
When an unscripted, undoctored, unchoreographed video of real gameplay, rather than just the parts Tasos wants you to see. That's what they mean, Darth.
Would you rather they launch and fail right away, or upgrade and maybe succeed.
Why should it fail if its launched right now. Tasos and the beta dudes have said many times that its solid and feature complete.
Unless you think they are blowing smoke, then I could understand your comment.
They still (from the very few official vids released) have not fixed melee combat (the core of any mmo). A delay does not give me much hope that they can fix it. This tells me that the engine is not very flexible and is hard to work with. If true, then do not expect patches and updates to come in a timely manner when it is launched.

Which is why when people say, "Oh, come on, they're a wee lit'le indie company and they deserve a break! Cut 'em some slack won't ya?" I just laugh. Do they really deserve any? No, especially not with a guy like Tasos. It's good to be proud about your product but it's even better to admit when you're wrong. Some stupid excuse like "we didn't expect the massive increase in Darkfall's popularity and will have to readjust" doesn't fly either. Arrogance does not earn respect, but for some reason, in Tasos' case, it does. Breaking his promises? No problem, he's Tasos! He's just a poor guy who got screwed and it isn't his fault. People only accept it because of everything he and his company are promising. It's quite sad in my opinion.

When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

Yeah, since late August I've lost so much hope in Aventurine. When news of that old "in-game" movie appeared (September's movie), I was ecstatic...I've slowly been disappointed, not so much by the movies or anything. More-so the attitude of Aventurine, EVERYTHING was always so positive, even though you could tell they were hiding shit. I honestly would have purchased Darkfall with a pre-order, if through this entire process they would have been upfront.
For instance, yes we offer an open-world, but much of what we promise will not be present, or up-to-standards. Instead we get claims of the greatest game ever, yet nothing to back those claims aside from that pearly-white smile on Tasos' face.
I'm just not sold by PR people, dev-notes would have been more acceptable, especially with a game like this.
But whatever, I'm going to own a large company someday, I'm using these dipshits as a good example of "How to isolate your consumer base". I will never make these same mistakes.

The issue isnt necessary the hype, it's their current capacity. Tasos said that at the moment they have over 200k requests which is far more than they can currently handle. So rather than go live and have all the servers topple over like most other companies have done they have decided to put the launch on hold and upgrade their capacity. Plus apparently there are other issues with support, account management etc... So I think they have made a good decision, certainly one for other companies to learn from.
and all those issues just magically appearead between December and January, the 15th? We should actually believe that? Because here the issue is not that such problems exists (duh!), but the fact that the statement of Tasos make you think Aventurine was completely oblivious of them!
How did it happen, some dude enters Tasos office one morning and go tell him that they do not have an account management system in place?
Like they did not know that in December eh?
Not to speak of the hype blunder. So what if you have MORE people that you can have on your servers? Ever heard of "staged release"? Make only the first 10000 be able to download the game when it is released, the rest will have to wait until there is more capacity, meanwhile you can use the 10000 game sold to buy another server, activate other 10000 accounts and so on.
Modern MMOs do not do this anymore but DAoC for example did, they had limited box released for that very reason and there is NO reason for Aventurine to not do the same.
Believe me, the fans will be way more pissed off if all are let in and the game just crashes and crashes and crashes than if 10k can play and the others have to wait a bit more.

Just keep in mind that Bill Gates was also a lying idiot as well.
Still, I think in the MMO business "lying" doesn't really exist. Everything a developer says fans interpret as being a promise, but it's not. It's almost always a projection or estimate, or what they HOPE will be the schedule.
I think people tend to blow all of this stuff out of proportion.
regardless of how anyone wants to view this, its simple: they f***ed up.

and now we're all wondering.. is this game going to be able to handle the player capacity? they arent prepared for us all to play, will they ever be if the game was not intended for so many players? how good of a game can this be if they couldnt even plan far enough into the future for release... nevermind beyond release?
well, i really hope they pull through and that DF is solid cause i cant find a good game to play.

People just don't understand what Aventurine mean saying they try to avoid all this hype. They don't mind of getting as many subscribers as possible. They just want them (subscribers) coming just in time. As we see in some games big hype isn't great. Alotta people come to the start, see all flaws and lacks, say it's another crap and go. Aventurine want to polish DF first and they don't want too much stress this hype producing. That's why they say they wanted to avoid the hype.

But Tasos said months ago that DF was more finished that most MMOs release recently. Then, he should welcome the hype and feel very confident about the game because everybody would praise how more finished the game was than other MMOs. No?

You can rely on DF to start the week off with a laugh! Aventurine and their fanboys might be a bunch of nutters but they're high on entertainment value.
Why does it feel like everyone wants this game to fail? I will admit that things seem and have seemed shady for a long time, but still, this game is aiming to deliver a different MMO experience than is normally found and everyone seems to be on the edge of their seat waiting for failure. I have my doubts about Darkfall but at the same time I hope that it comes out well, is playable and enjoyable. What do any of us get if the game never launches or launches horribly?
Trollig is caused by metal illness, mostly by bad self-esteem. If you are rejected you probably stand at home, at home you use internet to be someone you can't be in reality.
So they create an alter ego to boost their self-esteem to do things they wont dare to do IRL. You don't have to be sherlook to know that they are the biggest nerds on a nerdy site.
Their life circulate around gaming and when they being let down after a massive hype it's like when a girl/boyfriend cheating against you. So they hate everything, trying to 'help' others so they wont fall in the same trap. But then they'll notice that others don't care about gaming as much as they are and those are called fanbois. The fanbois looking forward to play a new game, but in hell they would. They will be hunted like they have a poltergeist inside and the trolls are the healing priests.
Oh and they like to be called 'sceptics' sometimes.
after that post, i wonder how many people will be joining "house triton" in playing pnp games?
Everyone with doubts, concerns, whatever about this game; who are not fanatical believers with cult like devotion -- that does not make them trolls, or sceptics, or any negative term which you desire to attach to them. Blind devotion and faith are to be reserved for deity, not some silly game nor that game's creators.
seriously.
maybe this game will release and it really is just overwhelming inexperience with everything game-related that is causing delays... who knows. at this point -- who cares?

Then it would be like the stuff we already know the skills to raise etc and plus npcs to go around and talk to and grow stuff and kill stuff. So, it's more like living in a world then just using a skill lots of times.
"Skill decay will set in at a slow rate for unused skills at an expert level. There are also skill trees that open up new skill categories that lead to further specialization. " (What in the hell is skill decay? Are they just pulling this crap out of their asses)
skill decay shows how long this game has been in development.
skill decay is a part of the old UO... if you were logged in for X amount of time and you hadn't used a skill, you would start to lose points from that skill.
i'm not sure if any game has utilized that "feature" since UO did away with it, like um, 8/9 years ago.

Then they wouldn't postpone the release? If it was a money issue they would have done as the others do, hype it up into oblivion and hope for boxsales.

Iiii-iiiiiit's.... me!!! *Hooray*

Would you rather they launch and fail right away, or upgrade and maybe succeed.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
What gets me about that quote is the fact that they seem to think hype is a negative thing, when...
They've said shit like the following, over the last few months...
From the Curse.com interview with Tasos (http://www.curse.com/articles/darkfall-en-news/372269.aspx)
"Yes we have all of that, everything you can expect from a dungeon and more. What's turning out to be a unique feature as far as dungeons in MMOGs are concerned is that we don't have instancing."
"There are several hundred spells and skills in Darkfall."
"The world can hold over 10 thousand concurrent users. Even so, the world is very large and won't be overcrowded."
"In Darkfall, you have the freedom and the pleasure of developing your character exactly the way you want. Ultima Online had about a hundred skills and spells. Darkfall has at least 10 times that, and there will be more added throughout the life cycle of the game with every update. The number of skills in Darkfall ensures that each character will be truly unique. "
"Skill decay will set in at a slow rate for unused skills at an expert level. There are also skill trees that open up new skill categories that lead to further specialization. " (What in the hell is skill decay? Are they just pulling this crap out of their asses)
"We have a large number of ships and boats of all sizes and shapes ranging from rafts to massive 50 cannon warships. "
From MMORPG.com's Interview with Tasos (http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm?bhcp=1&game=4&feature=2494/Interview-with-Tasos-Flambouras) This guy just screams "over-confident dipshit".
"Darkfall could launch today. It's more ready for launch than most, if not all of the MMORPG titles at the same stage that I've personally sampled and it has been for quite some time. Everything has been tested internally and since November 10th we've been using an ever-growing number of external testers."
"So long compared to what? We've been in development since 2003. Look at all that makes Darkfall stand out compared to other MMOs. In order to deliver all that we've had to develop proprietary technology from scratch. We also had to develop a company from scratch and everything associated with running a long game development cycle. We've done this independently.
Even games that license all their technology are taking 5+ years, while still using teams several times the size of our own. All this usually with the backing of major publishers, and most of their everyday problems solved.
So I would say that our development time is consistent with the making a breakthrough game, all the reusable technology to run it, and limited resources to do so. It's a long time, sure...but not for what we've achieved."
"Darkfall is a game that stands out, it's not a clone. Some people doubt it's possible, others worry that it is. Either way it generates a lot of interest. If people were dismissing it, then they wouldn't be talking about it. The well-meaning gamers root for efforts that try to raise the bar. So who's left? It's so easy being a skeptic.
Another red flag is Darkfall's large, active and very passionate community. A lot of communities would like to be like Darkfall's. Slandering our game is a way to get a reaction.
We have a thick skin; this kind of thing doesn't touch us. It actually makes us feel like we're on the right track. It has also served to fire up our community and has created diehard fans. It got a lot of people to take a closer look at our game and realize that this is what they've been waiting for. All the "trolls" have achieved is to inadvertently help perpetuate the buzz for Darkfall.
We know exactly what we've got on our hands. Our best answer is that our game is coming out and then the voices will have to find something else to talk about."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You know what...I'm done quoting the interview, the entire thing's just about him trash-talking other MMOs, claiming Darkfall's the tie-breaker.
The truth is, Aventurine created the hype, they never wanted to downplay it. It would have been so simple for the idiots to be honest with us through the last few months. Instead they chose to hide their faces and shove Tasos out the door to give a PR statement once a month.
Darkfall may be feature-complete and ready, but really if Aventurine's lying about something so simple as the fact that they DON'T want to hype their game...They're hiding a "massive" blunder. I really hate this company, I can't imagine how they could have managed to create what they're claiming, it's ridiculous. Just to ensure you all have the understanding of what I'm saying...It's not the concept that's ridiculous, Darkfall can be done...But I don't think these lying idiots will be the first.
And yes, the OP's a F%&#ing dipshit, never quote a statement that you've imagined.

A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

He seems quite shocked by the whole thing....its funny because if he would have looked at the sub's at there DF forum site he might have had a better grasp of the situation. Sounds like isolation in the extreme.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
I will never make these same mistakes.

and all those issues just magically appearead between December and January, the 15th?
"If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, if you teach him how to fish, you feed him for a lifetime"
"Hype surrounding Darkfall is huge right now, despite our best efforts." and now we are all thinking, you're kidding me right? what a toolbag.
and now we're all wondering.. is this game going to be able to handle the player capacity? they arent prepared for us all to play, will they ever be if the game was not intended for so many players? how good of a game can this be if they couldnt even plan far enough into the future for release... nevermind beyond release?
well, i really hope they pull through and that DF is solid cause i cant find a good game to play.

Just say NO to questing and crafting !
Questing: be all the errand bitch you can be!
Crafting: your night job that you pay to do.
Questing and crafting, keeping people paying to play massively mulitplayer games solo since Nov 2004.
