Hello everyone I was just wondering what is the crafting like in lord of the rings. Is it in depth, fun, or unique? Just need someone to describe it for me. Thanks.
One side question what is the most populated server?

I recommend you check out the Beginner's Guide to Crafting @ http://lotro.warcry.com/content/guides/crafting. That guide will give you a very good overview of the crafting system.
Whether it is fun or not is a very subjective question. I tend to enjoy crafting in games, so I spent a lot of time crafting. I have multiple characters on the same server so I can work in several different professions.
One of the things I do like about their system is the inter-dependence between the various professions. It does foster and encourage interaction between players.
Brandywine is the most populous server.
alright thanks I have one more question do I have to buy the gamebox or can I just sub?
you have to buy a box which comes with 30 days free play time. If you do get the game make sure you buy the Mines of Moria xpac as it already has the original game bundled with it for the same price.
Alright thanks.
Overall, the crafting in LOTRO is not the worst and I do not expect any in-depth crafting like FFXI, EQ2 or Pirates of Burning Sea those sophisticated crafting design. And, compared with WOW crafting, LOTRO is better.
Crafting is always means item balance so if the game drops better items, you dont have to rely on crafting. If it is a unique crafted item means it will only obtainable by a very few people.
Myself is not expecting any improvement in crafting, but one thing I'd like to see is use the stuff from fishing in other crafts.
I have done a lot of crafting in both EverQuest 2 and LOTRO and I don't see much difference between them when it comes to depth.
In EverQuest 2 you have to hit 6 buttons for about 30 secs to get something crafted. If you call that more depth?? I just call it a timesink.
And when it comes to imbueing items in EverQuest 2, well you got pretty much the same in LOTRO. You only do it in one go with the right recipe and don't have to do it seperately.
Next to that, when you mastered a profession tree you have a chance on critting items to make them even better.
And you got Scholar scrolls and dropped items (trophies) and better crafting tools to increase your crit chance.
And now with the new Crafting guilds that came with Mines of Moria expansion you can obtain really nice recipes to make some really nice stuff.
So I would almost say that crafting in LOTRO has maybe even more depth then Everquest 2
And when it comes to fishing. What else can you do with caught fish then to cook them. And that is exactly what you can do with the fish you caught. A person with the cooking profession can cook them.
Cheers
I have crafted in DAoC, SWG, EQII and now LoTRO and what matters to me is the item actually useful and can I use it or sell it. In LoTRO that is a resounding yes,
SWG's was the best but chasing resources was incredibly time consuming, EQII's at launch was rather fun but they really dumbed it down and I don't see a hell of lot of difference from LoTROs. LoTROs works for me and I am just hoping for more mining areas for the tier6 ore right now.
I miss DAoC
Game like FFXI don't drop any armors or weapons but everything for crafting to make everyone doing crafting because it's the core of their game. And, when you do crafting, there are 3 different zones if you wanted to cover most of the crafting, and then, each new character you created you've got to pay 1 dollar for character creation plus 1 dollar for monthly upkeep.
And they make crafting like manufacturing which I think is not necessary to be too complicated. And the animation to knee down on the floor to synthesize a component don't loooks so gorgeous. I preferred a bit balance between crafting and drops.
And EQ2 also the same, you have to have the skill to use machines and tools for crafting which is even more ridiculous. I recalled when I played EQ2, you may get injury from the machine and may caused you death. And the chemical thing even more dangerously, I often got knock out or dead when I craft chemical stuffs.
It doesn't matter if you are scientist in real life, the crafting in EQ2 will kill you instantly. But it was long time ago since the game just released.
In Pirates of Burning Sea, you must do crafting to build your own ship and enhancers, and they split the resources in different contested zone as well as PVP zone, which is even more complicated.
In LOTRO, there are many fish you caught are not eatible or for cooking. It was old subject, http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/218572
Anyway, there are something useful in LOTRO mostly are useless.
Any game uses crafting as core of mmorpg might be wrong direction. That's my opinion.
It all depends in how it's done.
In old SWG the crafting was the core of the game. You wanted a speeder? You wanted house items? or a House itself? Or any building? Or armor or clothing?
You were dependend on the crafters. And that's where it's success lies back then. It was a sandbox and there were plenty of players who were dedicated crafters and enjoyed it immensly.
Same in EVE Online. Industry it's called there and it's the core of the game.
Plenty of players in EVE Online are dedicated Indutrialists or traders and focus their gameplay on ship and module manufacturing. And others focussed on transporting these goods to various outposts to trade.
Cheers
