i made it to max lvl in eq2 and in wow i had to quit at 40 out of boredom.
EQ2 feeled deeper and had much more to do

Yeah but the population is a real concern....I liked EQ2 as a game but the character models sucked and it was hard to find groups unless you were max level......WoW has a much much higher pop and you'll most likely make more friends.......Also though with bigger pop comes more jerks......WoW always feels like its booming while EQ2 always feels like its dying.

I agree completely. I loved EQ2 the most, but it's population died out for everything but high levels and it ruined the fun. With population, WoW takes it just because you actually have people to play with. But for game wise EQ2 was for me.

from what I have read.. this is my biggest worry.. It looks like I would enjoy EQ2 more.. but I dont wantit to barren... I will have a friend to play with throughout the whole time I play tho..
on the most populated server does it still feel dead until lvl max?

Just like the suggestions on the forums... make a toon around the time you play, pick a server, and check out its population before commiting to one server.
If you have never played WoW I think you should and share in the MMO history. It's a lot better if you can find people to go from 1-(whatever the max is now) with. Great game to play with buddies, gets pretty boring alone.
Sent me an email if you want me to mail you some pizza rolls.
It was pretty fun for a couple days, but after that I would get home from work and have to wait 40 minutes to an hour just to play. I have a feeling that Blizzard is putting a low cap on servers to encourage people to pay $20 to get a transfer.
Combined with the fact that Warlocks are apparently gimped now, I figure it's not worth my money.
So I played CoX for a month, and then resubbed to EQ2.
I am having a blast again in EQ2.
Nagafien (sp?) is a pvp server, and is usually medium pop. I have a lvl 50 Troubador and I can get a group usually about 75% of the time.
But when you can't find a group you can solo quest, or work on collection quests, gathering skills, or AWESOME tradeskills.
EQ2 has the best crafting system I have ever seen.
Overall, I would say EQ2 is the superior product. The world is huge and there is tons of crap to do.
The only reason I quit previously was because my old computer didn't run it very well.
Edit- I can tell by your sig you like pvp and old uo.... just a warning, the Eq2 pvp system is kinda carebear.
You have to be within a certain level range to your enemy to attack them. The higher lvl the zone the bigger the range. I think it's 6 lvls at first.. currently I am in zones that allow 10 lvls.
But it kinda redeems itself by allowing you to loot some of their gold and maybe an item from their inventory.
But when you encounter another group in an open dungeon..... it's hella fun.
I'm not that into PvP on lvl/item based games anyway.. it started (atleast for me) in diablo2.. lots of people PvP'd.. i didnt get the point.. he won cuz he did more nightmare hell runs...
I mean.. i might be able to get into it.. but it would probably be more fun to play som GOW2 for pvp anyway...skill based is where its at for pvp in MMO's.. hope it happens in the future.. but i'm tired of sitting around.. i just want to play a game when im not working and enjoy myself
so EQ2.. the most populated servers are still all lvl 80's??? or...
People knock it; some even hate it.. but in my opinion it consistently offers the best variety and value-for-money that I've ever found in an MMO, which is why I still play it. It's changed a lot in the past year and the high-end content has become MUCH more accessible and friendly to casual gamers.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
First, look at some screenshots to see if the art and style of either game sways you one way or another.
If you decide to give WoW a try, roll on the server "Borean Tundra" that was opened less than a week ago. It should make for a more active experience as you level.
I would say WoW, simply because out of all MMO's that I tried (excluding my first one) this was the only one that hooked me up for almost 2 years. It has great PVE content, Balanced PVP that is both skill and gear based* And a huge comunity that you can play with. You can both solo and party, both being fun to do (although if you solo all the time it might get a little tedious). Great itemisation, cool classes, beautifull world which is full of things to do, nicely done crafting system... Basicaly, Blizzard polished the shit out of their game and it shows.
I haven't played EQ2 much, only the trial. From what I hear it's supposed to be realy good, I personaly thought it was fairly averege. Then again I only saw the separated trial-area so I can't make a real review of the game. But I can say this: the character models were ugly as hell.
But in the end it's realy up to you. The games are actualy quite similar in many ways. If I were you I would check out the lore behind the games and see which world I would prefere to quest in. Or what races/classes they offer. Just go with what you think would be more cool.
peace!

* Yes! I said it! The classes ARE balanced (especialy compared to other MMO's). The PVP IS skill based! You have to know the strenghts and weakneses of your class and build to be succesfull in WoW PVP. And ofcourse the gear matters. It's a roleplaying game! You get magical items to get stronger! What would be the point of getting realy good armour if it wouldn't make a difference? If you want PVP that is ENTIRELY skill based then go play Counter Strike.
I played WoW since its beta, it is a good game with much to do.
I was a guild leader of both a casual guild and a raiding guild, met several good friends there.
but after 4 years chasing the proverbial carrot got old and stale for me.yes I tried the expansion and yes it was great DK starter area anyone ? but, at the end of the day you are still getting gear to get yet more gear that wheel never stops..
I recently went back to EQ2 rolled on butcherblock server.
plenty of lowbies running around doing things there, I am constantly getting spammed for group invites, and as most have said there is heaps to do there!
Better class choices also helps here, the crafting is superb as well!
in the end both are good games, I would suggest getting the WoW trial (if you have never played) give it a whirl and see if you like it.
I've played both extensively. Right now i'm toying with WOTLK because there is NOTHING else relatively interesting to play. WoW is an easy game for easy mode style players. EQ2 was definately more in depth then WOW ever was but also way less populated. WoW is VERY polished and i think the music in WOTLK is worth the price of the game if you enjoy Gaelic style music.
They both put me to sleep after a short while because neither are a real challenge and neither require group organization to progress. You can go from zero to max level in either game with out ever grouping with other people which is a huge flaw in todays MMORPGS not to mention that grind is grind no matter what style of graphic your avatar's face has. They need to create an MMO that is totally dependent on other players for everything imo. Neither WOW or EQ2 foster socialization or grouping so if your into PVE then there are far superior single player games to satisfied that need.
They are pretty much the same game with the same types of players playing. With few exceptions, you must care almost entirely about max level and epic item rewards to really enjoy yourself in either game.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
I'd say EQ2 but I am currently playing wow. If I did not have a bunch of friends who played Wow I would not play it at all. It's not bad but it's just level to max then grind instances for gear, grind rep and then raid for more gear. I like the new expansion but once you hit 80 it's the same thing.
I played EQ2 for a few months and I enjoyed the crafting and the classes were great. I enjoyed it but none of my friends played and the servers were pretty barren so I got bored and left. Still I think it's a better game overall.
Maybe I have this opinion because I quit EQ2 two years ago but I have to disagree with the idea that is somehow requires more skill than WoW (or most other MMOs for that matte). I played EQ2 from launch to just after the launch of the Kingdom of Sky expansion. I've currenty been playing WoW for the last six months. Both games are worthy of play but I prefer WoW myself. Here's some of the differences I've noticed (note: I have quit EQ2 2 years ago so my opinion of it may be a little out of date.)
EQ2 advantages over WoW
1. More "depth/stuff", less "beatable".
If you're used to putting in a lot of time every day and don't want to hit max level too fast or waiting years for the next expansion you will probably find EQ2 preferrable. Also EQ2 in the way of things to spend your money on. In WoW you blow money on the money sinks (ie armor repair and skills) and on riding skills, besides that there isn't all that much of a purpose for it. Sure you can buy armor but the best stuff is no drop, and sure you can buy crafting materials but you're almost better off harvesting yourself. EQ2 on the other hand has play housing (in the form of instances), so you can blow money on getting a better house and buying more furnishings with it. Also EQ2s rare harvested items makes a good system for upgrading armor.
2. More group oriented.
Wow has a basic pattern for splitting up its content. If it's in an overland zone its solo, if its in a dungeon its group or raid. There are a few group quests in overland zones but they aren't very memorable. This can be an advantage or disadvantage depeding on your preferred play style but often WoWs system tends to make you just want to grind solo quests till high end since whats the point in group gear when you'll be 10 levels higher in a week. EQ2 (at least before I quit) still has solo content but a lot more of the quests require groups and you really feel like you get better xp grouping. Also they have several "Heritage Quests" which are long difficult (although by difficult I often mean camping rare spawns or killing 600 of x) which are very good items and can be used as display peices in your to show off how awesome you are. Basically when you just want xp in WoW, you solo (or duo), but in EQ2 you group.
3. Graphical Power
Well only you can be the judge of which game has a better art direction it is pretty obvious that EQ2's engine shows more detail.
WoWs advantages over EQ2
1. Quality.
People site EQ2 as having more "depth" but WoW definitly has more undenyable quality. EQ2 (at least when I was playing) seemed to have a new major bug each month (when they released there first expansion they overhauled there combat system in such a way that made old world raiding undoable for months for instance). So far I have never had a serious bug in WoW and most minor ones are solved by quickly relogging.
2. More interesting encounters.
While not nessisarily true for the massive solo game, the group and raid instances in WoW are great. In EQ2 most mobs and boss mobs felt the same. Very few instances in EQ2 seemd to make advanced use of scripting or unique boss only skills that would make fights different. In WoW even normal mobs in instances will fear you or polymorph you. Some at high end even drop land minds (thus unless everyone stands still you all get blasted with an insane amount of fire damage). And although I haven't been to any myself, a high level RL friend of mine (he played EQ2 with me) tells me of the awesomeness of raid scripts. For instance one encounter requires your group to run under randomly spawning antimagic shields that randomly spawn on the ground, other wise the bosses AoE kills everyone, but the shields shrink over time. Other scripts sound varied as well. Basically EQ2 has more "content" but WoW has more interesting challenge when it comes to group instances and raids.
3. Goop optional PvP.
I dont play a PvP server, but I do occasionaly like to do some PvP. In EQ2 there is only dueling and some failed arena system (maybe they got it working now, but i dunno). In WoW they have standard dueling as well as several types of goal based PvP in which you are put on a team and either do capture the flag, control point, and there are some others but I haven't tried them. The PvP is fun and you accumulate special points by doing it which you can spend on extremely nice items.
4. Runnability.
Although EQ2 has more powerful graphics WoW doesn't require a computer upgrade in most cases. Now maybe modern machines don't have a problem with EQ2 anymore but you must always be wary of having to jack your graphics down as soon as you try your first raid. And EQ2 with the graphics jacked down just looks plane aweful. WoW on the other hand looks relativily the same, its just nobody has a shadow and particle effects are off. Also WoW has almost no load times and few actual zone lines, whereas EQ2 is full of them and they are not fast. Also I don't know if EQ2 ever fixed there memory leak problem where your computer ran progressivly slower the more you zoned. I remember having to make my whole guild restart there computers after assembling for a raid to combat this.
5. Less Dev related bull.
Blizzard > SOE, simply stated. In EQ2 it seemed like they did a major revamp to key class skills every 3 months where as in WoW changes are slight and for the most part feel like real improvments. Also SOE is more likely to anger customers, (anyone else remember the super secret quest to unlock the frogloks that was totally in the game when EQ2 launched?).
6. Class Balance
WoW's classes feel more varied and are more balanced. Sure EQ2 has like 3 times as many classes but there is very little difference between a Brigand, Swashbuckler, and Assassin. However in WoW the Rogue is nothing like a Hunter or a Shaman. Plus the talent try system is well flushed out unlike EQ2 AA system. The AA system has many worthless trees of advancement where as in WoW they usually pick a tree for 1 nitch that class can fill. For instance a Paladin in WoW at high end can be a raid tank, main healer, or good dps depending on what talent tree he specs. This is great for when you're in a situation where your guild needs more healers and less dps or something like that.
Crafting is another deal people site as being better in EQ2 but I think thats more up to the player. EQ2s crafting requires much more time invested in griding combines but the crafters produce far fewer useful items with common ingrediants. Basically in EQ2 you grind common craftables which usually sell for very little but doing this allows you to make rare harvested items into rare crafted items which are very useful and sought after. The crafting process itself tries to be more indepth than just a combine button but its really jsut a bunch of hot key spamming. However if you think crafting should require a lot of work to do and shouldn't be something everyone does you'd probably prefer EQ2s system.
If you think crafting should be a causal thing you do to augment your adventurer you will probably like WoWs system more. The crafting process is fast but harvesting takes alot of time (though its still quicker than lvling a crafter in eq2 by far). WoW crafting usually doesnt generate income (though it can at certain points for certain items) but it does have more items that the crafter can make for himself. For instance a some crafted blacksmith armor can only be wore by the blacksmth making it. Blizzard does a good job giving crafters some abilitys or items that feel unique and useful.
Neither , both are as equally bad but WOW being the worst of the 2, Im not going into detail but moslty everyone knows what people say about WOW.
Congratulations, not many people manage to contradict themselves in the same sentence.
Please, don't go into detail as I'm sure it's like all the other "WoW" haters who think it's a bad game simply because it's not the type of game they like.
wow... I remeber when these threads were banned in 2004... specifically comparing these 2 games!
Exactly, why would anyone be interested in 2 dead games.
People playing WoW now are just going through the motions waiting for the "next big thing" TM [that would be Diablo 3...], both games feel very very old. Oh if anyone says "Yeah but WoW has nearly 12 million", ask yourself what does that really mean? How many dead realms are there? The number of free transfers should give you an idea and they keep extending the deadline on them.
Lich King has made WoW super super easy, to the point of boring the players. I know the devs wanted more players to see the "end game", but they are taking the mickey now. The fact even WoW has an end game shows how old the formula is now.
I would say neither, play Fallout 3, L4D for a vastly superior experience. Hell get yourself a 360, at least you can trade in your old games when you get bored with them.
Bizarrely Hitler had the same number of supporters in the en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_election,_November_1932 as there are people playing World of Warcraft Worldwide. Hmm World War..coincidence? Nathrezim is an anagram of The Mr Nazi !!!!!

Congratulations, not many people manage to contradict themselves in the same sentence.
Please, don't go into detail as I'm sure it's like all the other "WoW" haters who think it's a bad game simply because it's not the type of game they like.
Being popular != being good.
