I enjoyed Dark and Light and it was destroyed by lack of population. I enjoyed Vanguard and it was destroyed by changes forced on it to counteract negative reviews. I enjoyed Pirates of the Burning Sea and it was destroyed by lack of population. Each game was subject to a steady stream of "haters" from mmorpg.com, even pre-launch. How can you possibly hate a game pre-launch? In what world does that make any sense?
"Haters" do not cause a game to fail. If this were the case, mmorpg.com would have brought WoW to it's knees years ago.
A game fails when the majority of people that try it realize it's crap.
You have to be kidding... DnL launched in an Alpha stage. It wasn't even what most developers would consider in beta. You are the exact reason companies get away with this crap. You will pay for ANYTHING. Sad, really sad.
I logged just under 400 hours on Dark and Light over three months, an average of about 4 hours per day. I can assure you that would not have happened if I did not find the game entertaining. That's about 25 cents per hour of entertainment. That's hardly a scam, and is a much better value than I get from say ... a movie or a restaurant (for those that wondered why I brought them up elsewhere).

Sorry dude but your statement don't hold water. Maybe its because those games you listed sucked and your taste in games leans towards the lame side of things.

I was gonna answer to Sarg01 but darquenblade pretty much covered my point so
Sargo, I have to disagree with you on only your last part of your post, DnL was destined to fail from the moment these tools decided to continue forward with an inferior product they KNEW wasn't complete, not to mention they knew they had ganked code and tried to deny it, thus adding the litigation which only proved, and added to the negative hype already present. Then even after not getting enough funds to maybe fix what needed to be fixed by taking their actual "fanboi" base and loyal community and lying to them, and or engaging in shoddy buisness practices to those that had pre-ordered and decided they wanted out.
Let me follow that with, I played DnL, from the get go, through the goodie goodie side having devs and GMs in their guilds, through said folks releasing recipes to that side, and not the other, through the constant breaking of being able to play with a patch that was suppose to fix issues......so on, man I had high hopes for DnL, and my guild and I had a blast while we were there........the fact the population didn't expand or grow, is because there was no reason for anyone "new" to come check it out if all the neg was really proving itself real, and not just "haters" at work on this or any other forum.
Vanguard did not change things as you state because of negative reviews, and this is why it failed, IMHO it didn't fail, but deffinetly did not have a good chance at being more successful after the community was told, SOE will be hosting and doing marketing only......folks knew better, because they had experience with SOEs re retarded decision making and having a track record of taking some good games and fubaring them all up. That list doesnt need to be re-hashed, but then when Brad not a very short time later took his "fat" check and bailed, that was more affirmation that those who bailed because of SOE's involvment was coming to pass, so they bailed.......the game was not finished.......PvP was an after thought......memory leaks out teh arse, but hey........
I will follow this as well with, I played VG from beta, and still do from time to time, it is IMHO one of the best sandbox MMOs out atm, after all code was fixed, it is one of the most stunning MMOs graphically, and it as well had so much potential........
I cannot truly comment on PotBS as, I bailed when I found out it was being handled by SOE.....heh, sry but EQ 1 , EQ2, Planet, wait......I said I wouldn't re-hash that list......my bad, yah no thnx.......alrdy been stung like 6 times......../chuckle
Now, call the community what you will, "haters" and or fanboi's alike are all a part of it, and to say neither affect the success of a game , while taking into account the WHOLE picture as well, is what's silly......
I would venture to say that a large majority don't necesarily "hate" a product, but more so their opponents in the debate for what is to them, reasoning or their stance on why they are so pro (will use DF as example) both sides don't have any real leg to stand on at the point that this debate has reached because neither have experienced it to give real argument or backing for their reasons, so on......both speculate on the available information and past experiences. At this point, the DF hype MMO is in full swing, the fanboi and hater FORUM PEW PEW (TM) is itself a game both sides are playing because that's all there is as of yet, heh.....
It is human nature to debate, if it weren't, we'd all be "living" off of instinct and doing what our DNA was coded with to do, like animal instinct. Both sides have extremists, but I will say......if something beats teh negative hype as it were, I have noticed all the supporters, and people actually having fun will do just that, they find no need to do more then give good word to people they think will enjoy it as well, most of the time the "haters" though will be more apt to get back on their soap boxes to tell teh masses "I told you so", why because this is how they have their fun.
To the "haters", I ask you........what IF the game releases, and is teh bomb, fun as hell, all the dynamics that are going for work very well, and turns out to be solid (or, I should say more then in the position to be successful as well as deliver on what everyone states it will not), What would it take for you to then maybe try it, humble up a bit and say "hmmm, I was wrong, let's see what's good"?!?
For you "fanboi's", I ask you......what if all the negative comes to fruition?! You get kicked in teh yarbles and it is an epic failboat or worse yet straight up vaporware and you dont see it, what would it take at that point to humble up and say "snap, I was wrong......this sucks, btw "haters" you were right, maybe we should have listened a bit closer, or whatever.
The extremists are the ones that would never back down even if presented with real "proof" in the favor of their opponents argument, because at that point it isn't even about the "topic" any more. Wow, what a wind bag.....HAR.....but deal ya'll, there is always going to be the pro and con sides, and you may never understand the other sides view on it, because if you did, there wouldn't be a debate in teh first place.

You are just one of those people I instantly want to be friends with.
All the games you played are good games and had something special about them. They all suffered a grim fate. .. It's such a damn pity.
I just don't want to keep seeing that happen. Now, Darkfall has been under way so long. I just don't want to see this indie effort fall apart. There's no way. .. Im with this game! It will take the dedicated unification of diehard fans to stick to this game if it gets into trouble.
Im not saying it will. .. but, we gotta face it. Those other games were unique like Darkfall. .. And unique games just arent doing well these days. .. There are few, the expectations are gigantic, marketing is small. So only diehard players play.. and when more and more quit a game without inviting new people.. games just slowly die.
Thats unfair. Cause the concepts are cool and they just need time to polish. Thats all.

Soon we will know if they are allowing more people or it is BS. I guess the leakers will undersand this very easy and will let us know. So be patient for about 4 days when the first waves of the testers will start playing.
You can lead all of this crap about game haters onto human nature. Since most of the people visit forums and write pages long reviews only when they have something to bitch about, companyes see only the bad side of their products. Ever noticed on any game forum how low the praises are comapred to the bishin? That bases on but a very simple fact. People keep track only of their problems but take everything good and/or awesome granted and default.
That would bring us to WoW for instance and the newest expansion of "make everything easyer so even a retarded, handless 4 year old kid can get raid equipment and taste the glory". Ever seen wow forums? One fluid and constant bishin of retards. Seriously. People whine about why they dont have one shot kill buttons and how it sucks that they actually have to do something in order to achive something, and even beyond that why cant they get everything just because they say so and beyond that. To a certain point its no wonder that WoW became the sh*t it is today with 9 million of retards out of 11. Its a different question though that a company should draw a border line where the game is still a game and where it becomes a scribble book for idiots who fail so hard that they spend more time on the forums than in game.
That would be funny, IF, the most common "WAAAAHHHHHHH" atm wasn't "oh man xyz MMO is just another WoW clone!" I mean come on.......you want them all to be a clone, or do you want something fresh, unique, original, lmfao.......
It is unfortunate you can pick em out of teh crowds......but WoW no matter how successful, and has been the king of the hill for so long, is to blame for this. Most of you kids MMO resumes (I'd say a LARGE friggin majority) have WoW as their first MMO, with 4+ years tenior, and a splattering of other MMOs you "tried" for about 20 mins in comparrison, and your only way to play is to compare to teh only thing you know......take them blinders off, and know what you are getting into.....
Just because something "works" doesn't mean a new way to do it that works too (or could if understood) is a bad thing......I mean, if you like what "works" as far as you know it, then go do that, rofl......but because of the sheer sub #'s and success, these dev companies are all herded like cattle by the investors to make it more like "what works" , it makes money doesn't it?!
Soon we will know if they are allowing more people or it is BS. I guess the leakers will undersand this very easy and will let us know. So be patient for about 4 days when the first waves of the testers will start playing.
Sure but one thing worries me: They said the "free trial" started now but the NDA is still in effect. That can't be a good sign. When you give away a free trial to stress-test a fininshed product there should not be any need for a NDA.
So is the game still unfinnished or what is Tasos game?
And to me at least it seems like they are inviting people but just a few hundred when they were talking about thousands and hundreds of thousands, and if the game launches in time and they keep getting players in this slow most people will not get the free trial, only a few selected will.
No, this is not looking good at all right now, it is not something final about the game but it seems to me that Tasos either have something to hide, are full of BS or that something is wrong with the game. I hope I am wrong and we get an anouncement today that 10K players or more get's in this weekend.
I was reading the thread when I stumbled upon what seens as so much despair that even Pirates of Burning Sea and Dark and Light was being seing a good games at any point of their sad life...
Stop it all!!!!!
I know that there is a massive faith in DFO, but there is a limit to how much you can twist the reality to make bad seens good and good seens bad... Please, soon, to support any lie or failure over DFO, we will have people saying that NGE was the greatest wonder on MMO history exactly because Smedley pulled a Tasos and lied and deceived the players, not showing what he was doing...
The following celebrities have given their endorsements of the game as they are in Beta:
Seth Green- " Fun Game, If they would just add more than goblins , it would be a huge hit."
William Shatner- "very well done, I will play this untill STO comes out."
Chuck Norris- "Finaly a breakthrough in the gaming industry! On top of all the great features they have a feature that blocks my name so people don't have to suffer through al those retarded jokes!"
DF isn't a "scam" as in I'm gonna take your money and split, it's a scam as in, this game is POS crap about 80% complete, we have your pre-order money, cya, maybe we'll update it once or twice in the next year. To me, that is the premier MMO scam. And its likely that exactly what DF is, a POS game, overhyped by the devs, who originally had big plans for the game, but like many people who try this stuff, find out how big it really is and over their heads, so they do what they can to release a half-baked POS, take your preorder money, and promise to complete it with "huge" patches, while they slowly fade into oblivion. Tasos will be cleaning bathrooms before the year is out.
I'm pretty sure they haven't taken any pre orders yet, so they haven't take any one money. Most people are making threads about how little advertising they are doing, Yet you say it's overhyped? Do you per chance work for FOX NEWS?
(A pause in the discussion) I was reading the thread when I stumbled upon what seens as so much despair that even Pirates of Burning Sea and Dark and Light was being seing a good games at any point of their sad life... Actually, no, in my opinion, the Galaxies NGE/CU was pretty much the worst thing to happen in the history of MMOs, except maybe for the launch of World of Warcraft.
OK, I'll be clear what I do like in games:
First, the game has to require a brain. It needs to be at least modestly difficult, and it certainly needs to be complex. Things I liked: Galaxies at launch, EQ II Crafting system at launch (the one they scrapped after like 2-3 months because of bitching), Vanguard at launch (before it was nerfed to accelerate levelling speeds by over 4 times!), PotBS, and yes, DnL.
Second, the game needs to have a high degree of customization. By this I am not referring to graphic customization, though that's nice too, I mean that characters are not all clones of each other in their abilities/gear. WoW and EQ 2 were particularly offenders in this area, and level+gear based games in general lose my interest within the first month.
Third, the game needs to have engaging non-combat gameplay. This generally takes the form of crafting in MMOs, though it certainly doesn't have to be that.
Now that's not an incredibly terribly long list of things to satisfy, is it? The problem is WoW has convinced practically the entire industry that #1 and #2 are losing propositions and #3 isn't necessary.
Here's what I don't care much about that puts me at odds with the opinions of some gamers:
Graphics - They're nice to have, but not important to me. I enjoyed text-based online games for 13 years before coming to MMOs.
Lack of bugs - I'm a fairly tolerant person. I also have some programming background from a while back and I know there's no such thing as bug-free code of more than a few lines. I've also been around enough game launches to know that every game has a buggy launch and by the very nature of MMOs are not "feature complete" - after all, if the game was complete, how would they release any expansions?
So when people start talking about demanding a finished product, or holding game developers to higher standards or such, what I hear is the guy in front of me at Jack in the Box pounding the counter making an ass out of himself because there's onions on his burger and he's going to cause as big a problem for the poor employees as he can. His expectations are unrealistic and his manner is unfair, all because he's making the enormous personal sacrifice of $4.25. If he wants "service" he should go to a sit down restaurant and remember to tip generously. The customer is not always right - in fact, the customer is generally an idiot.
If you don't like Aventurine, don't pre-order Darkfall. I've got no problem with that. What I do have a problem with is you publicly trying to tear them (or any pre-launch game, really) down so that others never give them a chance.

That's about 25 cents per hour of entertainment. That's hardly a scam, and is a much better value than I get from say ... a movie or a restaurant (for those that wondered why I brought them up elsewhere).
Why am I expending energy on here for Darkfall? I enjoyed Dark and Light and it was destroyed by lack of population. I enjoyed Vanguard and it was destroyed by changes forced on it to counteract negative reviews. I enjoyed Pirates of the Burning Sea and it was destroyed by lack of population. Each game was subject to a steady stream of "haters" from mmorpg.com, even pre-launch. How can you possibly hate a game pre-launch? In what world does that make any sense?

Thats all.

Iiii-iiiiiit's.... me!!! *Hooray*

@Egotrip
Yes they are. Everyone is in beta now.
Yes they are. Everyone is in beta now.
Espcially Elvis and Bruce Lee they love it so much!
(A pause in the discussion)
I was reading the thread when I stumbled upon what seens as so much despair that even Pirates of Burning Sea and Dark and Light was being seing a good games at any point of their sad life...
Stop it all!!!!!
I know that there is a massive faith in DFO, but there is a limit to how much you can twist the reality to make bad seens good and good seens bad... Please, soon, to support any lie or failure over DFO, we will have people saying that NGE was the greatest wonder on MMO history exactly because Smedley pulled a Tasos and lied and deceived the players, not showing what he was doing...
I just got my invite to Beta. Downloading now.
Yes they are. Everyone is in beta now.

John Wayne said he wasn't very impressed. I'll wait for Benny Hill's review.

Needs more goblin scouts. TBH. IMO.
I'm pretty sure they haven't taken any pre orders yet, so they haven't take any one money. Most people are making threads about how little advertising they are doing, Yet you say it's overhyped? Do you per chance work for FOX NEWS?
