Best Scam Ever

Well it seems that Blizzard in cooperation with Fileplanet have put together one of the best scams ever. From reading the boards I have realized that many people, myself included (although I was subscribed before the announcement) have fallen for it.

You get to pay to try out WoW a full week ealier then everyone else out there, yeah right. Let's do a little number crunching as I have noticed the trends on this board.

With the exception of the first few lucky people to sign up right away and immediatly receive e-mails with a cd key and download info the rest of us have been forced to wait, and wait, and wait, and wait.

So far I've noticed many people have been complaining about waiting 6+ hours for the two glorious e-mails that are supposed to come quickly, in "batches". Well since you can't install the client, unless of course u go to the MMORPG staff's post about installing beforehand, once you get the e-mail you have to wait for the download and install, and since Blizzard in all it's genius used a Bitorrent style download expect that to take a very very long while, a day or two in fact if you are on a 56kps modem.

Well now once you finally get to play a day or so has passed, your week long expedition before the world was soiled by everyone under the sun a week later is now down to 5 or so days, all for $15.95 if you signed up just for this.

Congratz Blizzard you have offically steped into the crappy PR and customer service realm known only to one other company besides you, and at least they tell you your gonna be screwed, Sony Online.

6.5 hours waiting on cd-key and counting, bitorrent 2% done, going to bed, hope to see everyone in the Worlds of Warcraft soon, well within the week at least image

If you signed up for an ST2 key and are waiting for an email, try going to the following URL:

    http://www.fileplanet.com/betas/keydisplay_test.aspx

Under the Beta Column look for "World of Warcraft Final Stress Test and Open Beta", to the right of it will be your key if you signed up. If you see "World of Warcraft Closed Stress Test - Public [Ended]" that's not it, that's your old ST1 key.

If you don't see "World of Warcraft Final Stress Test and Open Beta" and you are a Fileplanet subscriber (which means you paid them), try signing up for a key again. If you signed up for one and it went through (no errors) and you're just waiting for your email, that page should help you.

I have been a long time FilePlanet subscriber and I didn't experience any of the problems you guys are experiencing.  Yesterday, when I got home, I had an email waiting for me about the stress test from FilePlanet.  I just clicked on the link in the email and I got my CD key right away and was sent to the download section of FilePlanet.  I downloaded the client from one of the private FilePlanet east coast download server and I had it on my hard drive an hour an half later (I have broadband).

Now, if all you guys subscribed to FilePlanet, shouldn't you have been able to download from FilePlanet rather than from Blizzard?  I have very few experience with BitTorrent but from what I hear, it's not something I want to use.

But I agree with most of you, FilePlanet should make it easier for you to get you CD key.  I mean you paid for it dammit.  I'm disapointed to hear about that and might reconsider my subscription, heh!

It took a little over 6 1/2 hours to finally get the cd-key and another 1 1/2 hours to download. I didn't have to use bittorrent. FilePlanet had the game and I could download at 4 Mbps. If you don't want to subscribe to gamespy, all you have to do is wait a week for the free open beta. I don't see what the big deal is. I would not even think of downloading WoW if I didn't already have a subscription to gamespy. One week isn't forever, especially as long as we have been waiting for this game. It's still better than EQ2 that doesn't even have an open beta.

You are sorely mistaken if you believe more people participated in the GW preview than what is happening right now with World of Warcraft.  In addition, the download for GW was a fraction of the size of WoW.

That being said, 700kbps download rates from Fileplanet, and got my key in under 3 hours last night.  No complaints here.  Be sure you actually read the instructions and submitted your info correctly.

ok, i think everybody needs to take a deep breath....

it is unfortunate that getting out the client isn't going as smoothly as everyone had hoped. Blizzard made a choice to reward Fileplanet for helping them by allowing for paying customers to have a week (and a lot of new people are now paying customers). I can't say I agree with the download method but I do think that for the size of the client it is the only rational way to do it since hosting it on 200+ sites would be insanely expensive for both Blizzard and Fileplanet.

Calling each other names and getting all worked up because the process is becoming very slow and just not working right is not going to help anyone. I think people just need to relax and go outside for a couple hours while this thing is downloading.

I'm not doing the stress test, I'm just going to wait for the open beta in a week or so and try playing then. I'm sure I'll experience problems just like most of you are now. Berating each other is not going to solve them so lets just take a deep breath and watch what we say.

^^^you know rational thoughts aren't permitted on this board ;P

More and more people getting broadband and files getting larger and larger means TONS of data to send. People are just going to have to realize bandwidth costs money.

Get used to places like fileplanet. Most everything will be subscription based in the future.

Hi. A nimrod is actually another word for a hunter. People who try to use the word as an insult look foolish, as that's not the proper meaning.

After Nimrod. Sense 2, probably from the phrase “poor little Nimrod,” used by the cartoon character Bugs Bunny to mock the hapless hunter Elmer Fudd.]

Notice how I never said it couldn't be used as such? I said it's (an insult) not the proper definition. Anyhow, Elmer Fudd WAS a hunter :) I'm not quite sure if your post was agreeing with me or disagreeing, though.

A lot of people simply "forget" to login to Fileplanet (if they are a current or new subscriber) and then when they go to DL the client, they are taken BACK to the Subscription Page. I saw this happen a ton last time around.  Everything works fine "if" they are logged in first.

And this is nothing but advertising by both companies. Many people would love an oppertunity to TRY the game out first and decide about a purchase before shelling out $50....$7 to try it out a little bit longer and have peace of mind is quite a small amout to pay IMO

Plus...IF you don't want to do it "don't" and wait for the real Open Beta.

Is it really something to get all worked up about? I think not.

So take a BIG breath....and now let it out.... image Now don't you feel better?

Good, I knew you would image

ps - and yes my DL is from Fileplanet NOT Blizzard (1hour 52 min total dl time w/cable ISP) image

There is something to consider when deciding to play now or next week when open beta starts. There won't be close to the amount of people playing this week and by the time open beta starts, the characters will be leveled to a degree while newbie areas will be so crowded that finding mobs to fight may be close to impossible. It may not end up that way, but again it is an open beta and there are a lot of people who have been looking forward to playing WoW.

i agree.... blizzard should have managed to make theyr get in game for the first time much better.

its true that guild wars had more players at once and the download/subscribe time was at top speed with out waiting (at least not on theyr side). but what do you expect from blizzard. after all theyr well known for fucking up theyr customers. and thats what i am affrade of in WoW, they can scare away theyr customers in a matter of days, they just use the "our customers are for-granted" rutine that they used latly and there you go.

While I 100% agree Blizzard really f*cked over alot of people with this stress test thing, how are "theyr well known for f*cking up theyr customers"?

I never played a Blizzard game before, but all I've heard is that they are a great company(aside from constant hacking in their games ::::18::::::18::::::18:: ).

This a Quote from the Final Stress Test FAQ in the fileplanet signup area....

"Are you charging people to play the Final Stress Test? "

"Blizzard is not charging a fee to play the final stress test or the open beta. However, to help defray the costs associated with distributing a large number of files and to keep our focus on finalizing World of Warcraft, we have partnered with FilePlanet for the distribution of the final stress test client, which is only available to FilePlanet subscribers. Subscription to FilePlanet carries with it a nominal fee. "

Yes I'm playng WoW (Level 8 Druid as of last night) and loving every minute of it. I dont mind that I spent $15 for a quarterly membership to Fileplanet.

I actually was trying to get a beta key for EQII when I signed up for Fileplanet so getting in the WoW Stress test/OB was quite a bonus!
