Certainly not an intended use of this system, but enjoy while it lasts. ;)

So is this what your going after next badger?...

Sounds like it would be easy money...But no thanks.

Listen up, i'm classed as a "vet" because like others i didn't initialy like the NGE yet i gave it a chance for 6 months and still quit, i went back to SWG in mid December '08 and i like the OP have been enjoying the game. I aint gonna tell people to try the game cause quite frankly the attitude of the so called "vets" would screw up the friendliness the game has (even between factions). You so called vets that STILL hate on the game and refuse to accept that some of us actually prefer it to mindless MMO's on the market at the moment need to just relax, i mean come on guys/gals, everyone has their own opinions, likes and dislikes, it's a game and as much as i feel your pain with what happened it's time to let it go after all this time.

OP, i'm glad your enjoying it again and anyone else whose willing to give it a go with an OPEN MIND.

On a side note i switched to Chimaera with being based in Europe (UK) and lets just say that my Jedi is finding much fun in PvP and PvE helping people etc, my Bounty Hunter finally has some marks worth his time on the terms, my Officer is actually useful at last and my trader can cover 3 different trades (Shipwright, Structures and Creature Mount maker). People always refer to Restuss as the ONLY PvP zone, ever tried the static bases or organising an event yourself if thats not good enough for you?

This will be my only post here as i refuse to debate things with the so called "vets" thats think they're right and everyone else is wrong, 80% of the so called "vets" won't even have tried the game recently with and OPEN MIND.

My final words on the subject are these, those of you that have an open mind and decide to try the game out, good on you, the game isn't what it was but in the time sinse i came back i find the game very similar just with a new skin. Those of you that refuse to try it out of pinciple or some other ideals thats your perogative and your entitled to it but don't spout crap you don't know please, the game ISN'T what you knew it to be and therefore you know nothing anymore.

I wish you ALL the best and hope you "vets" can find it in your heart to just let go your hate, it's not worth it over a GAME....

Flame away all you like now.

I just dont get it, the good old days were fun, but thier not coming back.   Ive lasted this long in game because I let that crap go, I look for something I enjoy when I play.   Either crafting, looting, pvp you can still have fun doing all of that still.   I get burnt out on crafting Ill go pvp, tired of crafting Ill go looting.

With the transfers its looking alot like the good old days.   I swear you all think a games supposed to feel brand new all the time, and the atmosphere is supposed to be launch with hundreds trying out the game.

WOW has killed the mmo, what Ive been reading it would take half a billion to keep up with current WOW, thats why you will be seeing more RPG's.

Maybe in 10 years we will all see a new sandbox that is as good as the old game was, but from what Im seeing, game companys think sandboxes are a risk.  With little reward.

ccp/eve online kept to the non-wow clone theme, eve online is a sandbox... eve online is second in western mmo subs...

soe/swg sold lucas arts on changing into star-wow and are um.... doing um... great?

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

does it have classes?  or can i be pretty much what i want to be?  cuz the being what i want to be, is the type of mmo i normally play.  can't get much more open minded than not being pigeon-holed into a certain "class"... i mean, don't they even show princess leia as both a leader and a spy?  or did that finally dawn on someone that perhaps you shouldn't have the same person representing more than one "class"?

Well I used to think that sandboxes are niche as well and more risky for developers to work on, but if you look at the facts right now, then the biggest premium ( monthly sub of 10€ or more ) MMORPG in the West is WoW with around 5 million subs and number 2 is EVE Online with 250k subs.

And you have to take into account that EVE Online has some special features, even for a sandbox, like time based skills opposed to regular skills and only ships, no avatars ( yet ). But even then, they managed to keep growing and reaching the 250k subs and becomming the NR 2 premium mmorpg in the West.

If SWG had stayed true to their sandbox ideals and improved on the game ( fixing bugs, tweaking mechanics and adding content ), like EVE did, they would have had a growth as well, and they would probably have like 500k subs now, and would be the big NR 2 in the west, keep in mind, they held on to 300k subs for a year, and when WoW released, the numbers dropped to 250k, but I am sure many would have returned eventually, if not for the CU and the NGE.

I think it is actually less risky to release a sci fi sandbox then a traditional fantasy EQ-type of mmorpg atm.

Look at LOTRO, the best release of the last few years when it comes to traditional fantasy mmorpg's, what kind of subs they got? Maybe 200k now with the very good release of mines of moria ...

Let's forget about AoC and take a look at WAR, I estimate their numbers around 220k, which can be considered ok, but hardly risk free.

Where did all those SWG vets go?

They are scattered over various mmorpg's, but there is nothing to really fill the gap. Well, we have Ryzom, but because of all the financial problems in the past, there hasnt been any development for a long time, so currently that is stagnating, and not really worty of the name "premium" mmorpg, not until serious development is fired up again. EVE Online also partly fills this gap, but no avatars ( yet ) and no cantina's with dancers ( yet ), no medics and doctors, makes this is a less social game then SWG was.

So I'd say that the 1st well executed 3D sci fi sandbox mmorpg released in the near future will have a very  good chance of success, better, imho, then an EQ style fantasy mmorpg.

I have to agree with the OP a little. I am enjoying coming back to see changes and playing around. I guess it is the nostalgia of the game. But my son is playing now, and he loves it, so that makes me like it more. Something for us to do together when we aren’t playing Left 4 Dead………….

I go back every time there is a vet trial. I go into the game with an open mind and each and every time I'm appalled at the poor state of the game. The accusation that fanbois like to make that the vets haven't played the game since 2005 is 100% wrong.

The game hasn't changed that much from November, 2005.  Sadily.

Since then they have stolen the WoW pet system.  They have added some instances (oh boy!).  They have ADDED BACK some melee combat, dumbed-down 100%.  They have added a very generic story-teller mode that really offers nothing.

Bugs are still there.  Animations are still horrible.  Combat is still broken.  The economy is still hyper-inflated, and the population is still terribly low.

I don't know but is it possible the OP logged onto a different game and just got confused?

Finally something we can agree on!

You have a knack for taking quotes out of context and use it to your own advantage (in an incredibly obvious and cheesy way).

Ever considered a political career? Or as marketing spindoctor? If anyone should be hired by SOE or any large MMO producer, it should be you imo.

How can something (the Storyteller system) be generic when it's pretty much unique to SWG?

Ah yes, the storyteller system. Another example of SOE being too cheap to actually pay for employees to assist their players. The storyteller system was what Pex used to use to create player events. When Pex moved on SOE was too cheap to replace him so they took his tools and called them content for players.

It's exactly like how they fired all the GM and CSRs and allowed free interns and Wardens to manage the troublemakers in-game.
