After release that might be true, but for a beta phase forum numbers far exceed subscription demand. Just look at WAR and AOC... both had 2 - 3 times the numbers we are talking about for DF and they might have 20% of those numbers now.

This is exactly what I was talking about with delusional expectations.

Talking about forums number.  Way more people bought AoC and WAR then signed up on the forums.

That was due to blitz advertising by both companies through multiple outlets (Magazines, Store Ads, etc)

Darkfall doesnt have the advertising part covered yet. Yeah yeah, I heard they have ads in greece, but that doesnt help the NA market.

As for me I voted Meh.

If Aventurine manages to pull a rabbit out of thier hat on this game, thats cool. The game wont see more than 500k subs at peak (Im guessing around 200k at most for a game like this - which isnt a bad number at all. 200k is still a successful number)

The game wont be what a lot of fans are expecting - no game is. And with the hype surrounding this game, I see more fans getting burned than people who will pick it up on a whim.

Darkfall has its loyal fans, just like Shadowbane. Remains to be seen whether DF is another SB or DnL. It certainly won't top 100k.

Shadowbane had 100k people at launch. So darkfall can certainly reach that.

I hope they'll do ok and are profitable.

I think they can both do really well and fail horribly. I've seen no substantial information to move my opinion substantially in either direction.

From a customer support point-of-view, Darkfall is already a failure.  Where do you think such a small indie dev team is going to find the funding to hire a professional public relations and support team?

Even if the game is playable, expect a lot of soon(tm) and "spin" from any posts the devs do rarely make when it comes to patches and technical issues.

I'm not willing to put up with that.

  • CalamarCalamar Member Posts: 116

    Well, no clue.

But if they get enough subscribers to earn money (after paying maintenance/credits/etc...) and the avaliable servers feel healthy, in population terms, then  the thing will go well.

My standart for failure is: going free, banckrupt, closing doors and things like that.

Numbers wont be comparable to WoW even if it is a huge success. WoW numbers is that kind of data that you never use for stadistics because it is just exceptional and far off. Don't think we will see those numbers for a lot of years on a non Blizzard game.

But if Darkfall doesn't deliver, we can only expect that one of the other Sandbox going to be released soon (looks like mostly this year) does.

If all "fail", we will be doomed with level/gear grind ones for quite a long time.

If this game actually exists on a hard drive somewhere and isn't the longest, most drawn-out scam ever, it will be the biggest mmorpg success the world has ever seen simply because it is so incredibly different.

All future games will have a similar gameplay system to Darkfall in the coming years rather than being Everquest with higher resolution textures and different looking avatars!

Why are there so many cutesie, fantasy, childish MMO's. Give me blood, gore and a long lasting challenge. I don't need my hand being held along the way. Thanks.

Imho their biggest problem is how they will manage the large number of players at launch / large drop off after month 1 most mmo's see these days

Being left with too many and inevitably empty servers could be disastrous for aventurine both financially and game wise

I have to agree on this part.

No game should even think about hitting those numbers. WoW numbers are still an MMO anomoly.

An indie dev should always aim lower. That  way if they hit higher its a win.

If Aventurine delivers this game has the potential  to be one of the best, if not the best MMO to date. If it releases feature complete and not full of bugs then its success could rival original EQ or WoW, as long as the current system of things in MMO's hasn't made the general MMO playing population a bunch of panzys that can't handle a game like this.

You post has at least 5 actual or implied "if" statements as conditions for DF's success.

I think it will do ok.  People need to have realistic expectations for the game though and not built it up to be the best, most awesome game ever for everysingle person who decides to try it.  Some people will like it, some won't.

I did look around.  I do hope you can get in this new phase (trial or whatever is called) so you can review this asap (when the NDA is dropped, ofc).

In any case, we will all see the light soon.

You cant compare Aventurine with Blizzard or SEO mate, you just cant. I am not talking only about financial part, i am talking about their past games... ALL games what Blizzard did was a hit for his time... Blizzard and SEO have strong finacial/development/marketing teams behind, with years of experience...

Also, look at Blizzard and SEO game content, i mean, artwork... graphics/sounds/etc.. they put some serious time there, not talking about game play.

Time will tell us soon what Aventurine will bring us...

I hope for reading your review soon :)

Please, do try to be objective.  Most reviews will be so extreme the first days that it will be insane.

Remain neutral!  Bring some middle point to this maddness.  Btw, personally, I lost my last faith... but thats just me (and I always can change my mind, ofc... maybe hehehe).

It has zero chance to be very successful as far as subscriptions go.I would say if it could hold around 200k subs that would be successful.Even when we saw games like WAR and AOC spike sub totals, they were all false because there is not enough new players WILLING to look for a new game. Most of those subs were most likely bored WOW players, that really had no intention of staying in those games, that is why they returned to wow and their maxxed out players. There was also the 30 days free witch once it came up ,players were gone.

Now we have several other PVP games coming out ,there is a VERY small market to draw from for Aventurine.WOW is like a FAD it draws off of it's own numbers and not the game,Aventurine cannot do this and really i would be surprised if they can spike 500k ever.I highly doubt they will even have 500k discs printed up,i think the majority will have to d/l this game on the net, witch again limits the subs because MANY refuse to use CC's online.

I thought and still think Vanguard is/was the best game made to date, but the same thing was evident then, spiked for a bit, then all the people went back to their old games. It would take an incredible fail by their old games to get players to leave for a new game.

It could be several years now before we will see a spike in NEW gamers looking for a new game. The economy is just horrible worldwide so until that repairs itself,we won't see pople wasting money on games.

I don't think this game will do so well. I think that after launch (if it is within 3 months) there will be a lot of complains about an empty world.

Perhaps I will be pleasantly surprised by a lot of positive reviews, but since I have been following this game for the last year, I have lost all hope of that actually happening.

Yeah you're right, if only Aventurine had started mass producing Betamax, VHS and TV sets back in the 1980's maybe they would actually have the funding to release a project that's been in development for fuck-knows how many years!

Why are there so many cutesie, fantasy, childish MMO's. Give me blood, gore and a long lasting challenge. I don't need my hand being held along the way. Thanks.
