Character models in EQ2

ColdmeatColdmeat Member UncommonPosts: 3,409

If you've ever wondered why so many people seem to dislike the character models in EQ2, even though they are more realistic than those in other games? This might well be the reason.

I found it rather illuminating. And while I haven't really found the characters to look like animated corpses, I also play in 3rd person view, quite a ways back from the action. The few times I get up close, it hasn't been to bad, since in many instances you're dealing with non-human beings, like trolls and so on. The humans, and halflings are kind of eep inspiring though.

Very good article. Maybe game designers should go back to using actual video of real people in thier games image Like phantasmagoria.... did I spell that right? lol

I want to know why so many of them have poor posture.

Bad upbringing. Obviously their parents slacked off in their child rearing duties.

Interesting article. I never thought about that, but its true. Still, I've never had a problem with the character models in EQ2.

I have seen something on the EQ2 models that I haven't seen in a MMO game... when my scout was in sneak mode, I was gawking at her hands. Her individual fingers were moving separately, just like a RL person's would. image I'll get a screen shot of it and post it here (of course you won't be able to see the movement, but it looks a heck of a lot better than mitten hands with fingers 'drawn' on them).

    Good Stuff, thanks Coldmeat...image

I was creeped out a bit when I first saw the EQ2 models, but I eventually got used to them.

Everything born must die. All that is, will come to ruin. This is the essence of Doom. So sayeth the Doomsayer.

nice, i've heard something about that, and it seems pretty cool.  EQ2 is pretty peculiar though.  npc speak?  does that mean Im gonna be bombarded with talking npcs over and over again every time i enter a city?  or is it pretty regulated?

It's not too bad, though not all of the voiceovers are in by far. Some of the "chatter" type ones you get as you run by can get kind of tiresome, but I think there is an option to turn them off? Not entirely sure, since I just prefer to listen to my own music while I play, so I have the sound turned off now, having heard the voiceovers, musid, and ambient stuff already.

Yes, even when the face and hair is really well done, the hands usually looks like wood. The Final Fantasy movie was really bad about that. It was like a bunch of people with prosthetic arms. I'm glad the hands got some attention here; can't wait to see them in game. ::::28::

Yeah, the hands are some of the best I've seen, MMOG or otherwise, though for some reason, some of the gloves/gauntlets just look like oven mitts. Which if they'd ran with it, would have been pretty cool, in a humorous way.

I disagree a bit. I mean look at the faces and characteristics in Doom 3 or some of the shots of Half Life 2....they look GREAT (IMO) and look to be the most detailed depictions of face and emotion ever in a computer game. (as far as I know)

Also look at movies like Final Fantasy or the Animatrix(who's opening movie is TRUELY breathtaking and beautiful)

So I don't think we're experencing a realalistic backlash per say...as far as computer games are concerned. (never seen the robots) It simple depends on how well it's done.

I love the lvl of detail represented in EQ2 and enjoy the animations of everything..."except" the EYES

They're ok...but to me something is either missing of just done wrong (not that I could do better lol) but they seem too big or a bit off. I mean when I went to do a screenshot for my cut out for the character page online, my characters almost look cross-eyed or something.

Now...I luv the game and I am buying it and playing. So this is NOT a game stopping issue...but IMO it's something that "could" of been done better .

Has anyone else felt or sceen what I'm talking about?

I truely beleave what was written in that article, becasue i feel that way :P, they are kinda scary, but i am getting used too it now, and i also see it in doom 3, and half life 2, reminds me of those B Grade horror movies with souless people in em :P

Personally I just think they are poorly done over all.  They have disproportioned body parts, poor detail in general despite using a zillion polys, and a total lack of fantasy flare or style whatsoever.

Games like Guild Wars have far exceeded EQ2's character graphics and have done so with far less.  There really arent many mmorpgs I would say have poor character graphics other then EQ2.

Even with all the bad things people are saying about the game though I still have my fingers crossed and a little bit of hope left.

I almost barfed when I saw the characters in the pre order disk, I hated the hair. They must have changed it sometime between now then and now. They are much better and the realism really adds to the immersion. I am constantly amazed at the animations also.

Last night my Kerran was running a errand over in Baubbleshire where the 'wee'  folk live and when he would go in thier doorways he would crouch untill he got into a area of the room that was tall enough for him to stand straight in.

The details in this game are amazing. I still freak when a NPC turns his head as I walk by or a mob follows me as I circle around it. I have played nearly every western MMORPG since the days of Meridian 59 and this is by far the most enjoyable one I have ever played. I have been looking for a game to replace DAoC as a long term game and finally found this one.

Off the subject a tad but when swimming the water ripples and you leave a wake, now that is totaly cool. Gameplay is not bad either :)

    I miss DAoC
