Can a Troll be a ranger?

Can you use bows at melee range or do you have to switch to a melee weapon?

Can you use a xbow instead of a bow? What are the differences?

    Yes, however, you would need to do the Betrayal Quest since Trolls can only start off in Freeport and Rangers can only be created in Qeynos.  So, start as a Troll Scout and then Predator in Freeport and when you hit around level 11-15, seek out the NPC to betray Freeport and become a Qeynos citizen.  Then when you hit level 20, you can become a Ranger.

    I don't know the answer to the other 2 questions.

    from what i have read.

    no, you cannot fire a ranged weapon in melee range.

    and yes, there are crossbows you can use instead or regular bows.
