Being the best reviewed, most played and exaulted by other developers (Lastest being Richard Gariott, previous to that Bioware and Bethsoft,  id software before that and countless others - just google some names and WoW and you'll probably find they're playing it), most well known and yes...  most popular... because people vote with their wallet and that makes a difference... the vote of the people makes a difference... hasn't 2008 told you anything?   ALL of these things... COMBINED makes it arguably the best.

Yeah yeah yeah, opinions and all that, but if we all had to agree on a best MMORPG if our lives depended on deciding on one thing, we would pick WoW, because nothing else brings any of the success or acclaim that WoW does.

It will never be agreed by everyone, but right now WoW is the best by all the measurements that matter.  Last I checked, MMORPG.com forum opinion is not considered indicative of anything or relied on by anyone.

History will remember WoW as the king of the genre this decade.

That doesn't mean you have to like it though.  Plenty of people voted against Obama too :p

History will remember WOW as a game that took the basics from all its forefathers and made it playable by the average house cat. It's the only game i've ever played thats so unchallenging that i can fall asleep at the keyboard while playing it.

That's just your opinion.  You think WoW is such a simple formula, but you are so wrong.

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

And that's just your opinion, and " your so wrong" is a great description by the way, how is it Exactly that wow is so challenging? To me it's about as hard as two kids smacking each other with foam swords, but please explain the challenge that WoW provides. Last time I checked pve was a cakewalk, pvp is a broken disaster that's built for 2 button smashing. Maybe it's the new content like Wintergrasp..no wait, thats broken isn't it, I'm all out, enlighten us.

In terms of programming, yes it is not that easy to clone after all this 4.5 years of enhancements.

Or better, it is not that hard to clone but extremely expensive to do it. There has not been a sucessful wow clone simply because no one has put the dollars/euros to support the tsunami of man hours needed, and the semi-clones around end up lacking some systems  that wow'ers take for granted.

    to the OP,

    1) it is really hard to combine wow and fail in the same phrase. No matter the personal tastes -and this is really one of todays big problems , current schools implemented the idea that everyone of us is so special that we ended believing it, and think our own opinions count for something without looking at the great scope of things, even after wow dies, no one can in truth say that wow failed.  A game that had 10 to 20 times more subs that any of the competition simply has not failed . And that is the great scope of things.

    2) wow crafting system is not that great, yet it is still miles away  from what the most recent released big, and for many possible wowkillers mmorpg's offer (aoc, warhammer).

If all these 'big' games (WoW, EQ, WAR, AoC, LotRo, Eve) were released at the same time, I dont think WoW would have the most players. I think it's just easier to Start playing WoW than to quit playing it.

I dont think any of those game that I mentioned above will ever reach even near the same amount of players (LotRo is doing good, and got a feeling that it's going to get even better) that WoW has.

Aion seems to be the next 'very good MMO', by the looks of the Korean Beta. It looks very smooth, has fantastic graphics and Class system. And the BIGGEST GOOD THING, it's going to be released at a good time; most of the WoW players have already got their 80's and best possible gears etc and there's not going to be more expansions soon.

I think that's a good thing for Aion's success; Im 100% sure that some people will be bored of WoW and will want something new.

AND, if Darkfall is a success (Which I, for some reason, dont believe..), it will 'steal' some PVP'rs from WoW for sure.

So In my opinion, it's going to be a hard spring/summer for World of Warcraft.

In what is wow a chalenge? well, get a group of friends and go to naxx equiped with blues and stuff like that, dont do to much reading on bosses and try to figure it all out by yourself, its not TO hard, but its a nice chalenge, meaning that you fell like you have to work on it and still it fells great, and for people who don't have much time to waist everyday its just great the way wow works

many people here don't seem to like wow at all and say how bad it is, its not bad, everything is just plain simples even for a starter, and its not easy to clone to, because of the way blizzard puts everything together in a great world, and the ambience is just great, i tried both lotro and war for a month each, and although they do better then wow in some points it just doesn't fell right, doesn't fell natural, and that is where wow gets the players who just want to have fun, it's like meeting a nice girl and instantly conecting with her vs meeting a nice girl, and although she looks good, you just don't fell anything there, you can still hang around for the rest of the night (or in mmo case, the subscription) but you naturaly just fell like going back to the other one.

now, if you are extreme devoted/hardcore player to whom every aspect mather, well, good luck staying with a game for more the a few months, because i don't see anything else that can grab people on the long term out there

companies follow the wow formula for one reason only, to get the subs.
whats good to me perhaps isn't for you, such is life.
IMHO  WOW is awful, but some like it, good luck to them.
Companies should have different server, one with real tough mobs, so a group is needed, say solo green mobs only.
Other servers with WOW settings /laugh
SOE messed up when they nerf their games, why they do it? give us the choice, let us play original servers.
at the moment nothing appeals to me, the social aspect of gaming is important,  I like to group  etc.
Grouping is dead in todays games, so for me the genre is dead.
If you like WOW then I am glad you do.

In the name of 11.5 million people who pay and play the game, thank you :))

Again the word "some" gets a whole other meaning to me  :)))

Let's say " a whole lot" like Wow, "some" other don't play it.

11.5 million against 200-250K, which is the "some"....?

11.5 million people you say...............very nice.....shame 10 million of them live in a small village in China ;)

People in Asia pay for WoW by the minute so all this millions and millions of subs is creative accountancy by Blizzard.

I have tried WoW and found it at best the most basic MMO I have ever played, too cartoony for me which explains all the 8 yr olds who play it just to swear at ppl.

It's popular because it runs on any system and if it keeps lil Jonny quiet then parents will stump up the cash.....

Gaming since 1985 and still going strong.

hmm even the basic haters actually believe wow has at least around 4 to 5 m subs in between US and  Eu :) . some , more fair biased agree that 6 to 7 m is probably the right number of non asian based subs.

i honestly dont see what is the problem admiting wow is the more popular mmorpg and the one with more subs without dragging the china topin inside, because we all know that even without the chinese market  , wow still has 6 to 10  times more players than any other "premium" mmorpg .

and by admiting that none is saying that wow is the best game. well on my country sl benfica has % of supporters of around 50% of the population and that doesnt make them the cronic champion.

But apparently there is this culture on the mmorpg forum were even negating the obvious is seen as a good thing  ( like sayinng aoc has no population problems, wow doesnt have the players it has, that 1000 players play swg, warhammer is growing etc).
