First i must say that i bought the game when it came out, i had a pretty crappy computer back then that wouldnt let me get much more than 20 fps, even with that i enjoyed the combat system, the game was broken back then so i quit after my free month.
But recently i have been checking out what people are saying about the game and it seems like most of the stuff works. I know the population got much smaller and they had to merge servers. Got a brand new gaming rig so performance shouldnt be a problem.
So i'm hoping that somebody that is still playing or has played recently can tell me if it's worth giving it a shot now months later.
I have a few questions:
How are the high(est) population servers, do they feel like a ghostown or will i have some people to play with?
How is the pvp content? Large scale sieges? Mounted combat? Pvp minigames? More importantly are there active guilds fighting for keeps/guild cities?
Lastly, how is the pve content, is it fun, are there many raiding guilds?
Thats about it, hopefully somebody can answer me before i subscribe again, cheers!

Read the aoc forum for a few weeks and you know what to do.
It's busier after the server mergers but i don't think the game is good.
I had a 60 day gamecard and i activated it half december, played for 3 days and few hours after server merge.
What i liked about aoc was the graphics and the music, the rest was just boring.
But as i said, read their forums and make up your own mind, because fanboys will try to talk you in the game with everything they can think of, true or not.
I'm a newbie for the most part myself, so there's not much I can clarify in regards to some of your concerns about the game.
All I know though, as an EU player, is that they recently merged servers within their respective ruleset (PVE, PVE-RP, PVP, PVP-RP) and the server I currently play on (PVE Crom) is full to the rafters, possibly too full at peak hours. I can also confirm that PVP server has the same activity level, possibly more so (as witnessed in Tortage and Global chat), which leads me to conclude that you shouldn't find a problem with population if you stick to one of the core servers and not one of the newly released ones (fresh start might be an idea though).
As for performance, the game runs absolutely great for me (dual core 2.8gig, 4850 512mb, 4 gig ram) and without a hitch. I have heard they have greatly optimized the game over the past several months, since release. I barely dip below 50fps, regardless of whats happening on screen, although I have disabled landscape shadows - everything else been set to max. The DX10 patch is also on the test servers currently and will be released some time in the near future.
Can't comment on PVP sieges since I play on a PVE server (most people on my server don't participte in border sieges until lvl 80) although there is high activity of mini-games through global chat. Same can be said for raiding, LOTS of guilds recruiting people for the end-game content, (which I hear still rather thin, but the next couple of patches will introduce several new raid dungeons) and others wanting help with epic instances.
Like I say, I've only been playing a couple of weeks and taking my time by sampling the classes (current highest job is in the high twenties) but the game appears to be thriving as far a I can tell. The later levels could tell a whole different story, but Im confident to be proven otherwise.
Yes, i definitely recommend you to try AOC again.
Well AOC had a bad launch with alot of bugs and missing content, but they have improved the game ALOT since launch.
Today AOC is a really cool and fun game
How are the high(est) population servers, do they feel like a ghostown or will i have some people to play with?
Well they have merged the servers and pretty much all servers have a medium/high pop now. There is ALOT of players on the high pop ones, i play on Fury EU (PVP) sometimes it feels like there is to many people on that server .
How is the pvp content? Large scale sieges? Mounted combat? Pvp minigames? More importantly are there active guilds fighting for keeps/guild cities?
The pvp content is really nice, you have 48vs48 sieges they are really fun and work good now. PVP-minigames are pretty fun. And yes there are alot of guilds fighting over keeps especially now after the merges , FC has implemented pvp-gears, pvp-lvls, and pvp-system. You have pvp lvl 1-5, you get pvp-xp for killing people and after x amount of xp you gain a pvp-lvl and you can buy pvp-gear. And if you kill alot of low lvls you will get murder points, if you then continue to kill low lvls you will become a murderer. A outcast from the normal society, you will become the bad guy. You cant enter citys becaus guards will attack you, you will have your own murdercamps were all the murderes hang out.
Lastly, how is the pve content, is it fun, are there many raiding guilds?
Yes the pve content is fun and there are many raiding guilds. They will also launch a huge new patch in a few weeks with 2 new lvl 80 dungeons, 1 solo and 1 group dungeons. The group dungeon (xibaluku) will have a dozen diffrent bosses, Very cool dungeon . They have made a trailer with the new dungeon (check youtube for Age of conan xibaluku ).
Good luck m8
Edit: they have also made a trailer for the new zone Ymir's pass, you can also find this trailer on youtube.

Thanks guys, guess i'll resub tommorow. I'll be playing on the US servers though, hopefully they are as populated as the UK servers.
Cheers!
Cimmeria or Set are good choices.
Have fun mate.
Good luck, but I REALLY recommend you TRY it before you resub. No point in giving FC your money if AoC turns out not to be what you want, again.
Any updates on when they may try to win back old disgruntled customers with free play?
Fungerer som det skal
Hi imjin, hope your keeping well, last update was still Q1 / 2 2009 so still a little ways off unless they throw a good suprise at end in March (which would be my bet, but with hearing about options in February newsletter hopefully)

Short answer: No
I'm enjoying it.
*shrug*
I know there are people that dislike the game, but the PvP is awesome. The quests are more interesting than WoW, but that's not really saying much lol
Tortage is a masterpiece imo. That is how all PvE should be like.
My suggestion: find a good active guild that will help you out. Maybe bring a friend along. The quests are more fun if you have a leveling partner.
