As the threads about how full loot is "bad", the pvp games community behavior, predictions about griefers disgusting most players, etc... are now nearly as common here as vaporware/scam threads, I'm curious to know how you expect darkfall to be, and how you will behave yourself in this kind of universe.
It will be a 3 parts poll :
1. Do you think ffa pvp/full loot/no insurance/no protected zones mmos are doomed to fail (or have to change their rules to succeed) ?
2. How do you think Darkfall will be ?
3. What kind of player will you be in darkfall world ?
Question 1...

Like everything, there'll be a market for it, however small.
There are a lot of pre-WoW, or 'Old School' people who are gnashing their teeth at the prospect of such gameplay, and a lot of players (like myself) who are interested to see what it's like. Out of this last demographic, a percentage will probably find it a revelation, and the rest deem it not to their taste.
Quite frankly, if it's not your type of thing, there's no point moaning about it. It's this same skewed logic that annoys me about people who bash WoW for being casual. Some people LIKE that gameplay. There is no wrong or right, just individual preference.
Alright I know you hardcore players will flamme me for that but I voted for some kind of newbe inssurance because I never played this kind of game before and I always play solo and jump in the middle of the action.. meh if I think too much about it i'm almost certain this game will be boring since I'll do that the first few time I play then I will realise I can't continue doing so and ragequit in the first month or so.
But maybe I'll find some new way to play and enjoy it. IF the game release this year in NA. If not well too bad some other game will get my money.
Question 2 : How do you think Darkfall will be ?
I think that people have a misconception about these types of games and focus so much on the negative, and what could be bad about it.
The great thing about this style is the feelings you get from playing. Everytime you step out of the city it feels more tense, the world feels dangerous, and you are always on point. Everything in the game holds value, and items will flow in and out of your possession. This creates the most prime environment for crafters, and a very dynamic economic environment that can never be matched in a themepark game. This in turn creates a very dynamic localized social aspect that will also never be matched in a themepark game. The thrill you can get fighting, the risks you take, and the rewards you may reap are so great that it will draw out emotions that no themepark game could come close to.
All of this comes together to create a very different environment that can be scary, overwhelming, and tense. This can put a lot of players off, but in the end it can provide so many things that other games can't.
The polls are pretty spread out and descriptive so it will be hard to draw conclusions from them, and then on top of that they are assumption based.
Question 3 : What kind of player will you be in the Darkfall world ?
The thing is, you will be paying REAL money to get robbed in a game. I have played such games before. Back then when Neverwinter Nights (yes i know it's not an mmo, but it was a warm up) there were many paeristant worlds with full lot/full pvp/PERMANENT DEATH rulesets. However, these were RP servers and almost everyone in the community was pretty mature. All PVP situations were done in-character (so there was a certain rp restriction to how you pvp somebody) if you just ran around ganking people AoC style you were kicked/banned before you knew what hit you. Even with this, the feel of the game was really tense. It was almost exausting to play an evil character. Now keep in mind this game was completely free. Now think about this if you payed what? 12euro a month and suddenly you get waylaid with all your stuff...and end up like a tramp, you would feel all those months invested in the game have been thrown away.

Yea that could well happen to me alright since I don't guild up but if you get in a good guild they will probably bank lots of stuff for pvp purpose.
They can try all they want. I am still pre ordering and supporting this type of game.
The main problem (in my opinion) with threads like this, games in this genre, and the communities that play them is that loot is so damn important. Sure loot is nice to have and gives players something to look foreward, but when it becomes a huge focus of gameplay, it really turns me off. I love to fight, but fighting for item rewards is very tired and very trite.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
I just don't think this game is going to be the gankfest most people seem to be imagining.
The consequences for pk'ing a friendly are a little softer than I would like, but they are still substantial. And there was a dev comment just recently that the world should be big enough to find a (relatively) safe area from PvP to grind or harvest in, if that's what you want to do.
I'm also rather optimistic about this. I think being bound to a chaos stone in the middle of nowhere, and having to bank in unguarded wilderness outposts will be really annoying for rpks, and limit well their hability to grief newbies (if Gianna is right pk stones will be rather far from starting cities, and wild camps with banks are rare).
Also the economic needs for clan cities look huge, so I don't think it will be easy for a savage clan to build and maintain a city if they kill any stranger in the area. There will rather be an incentive to securize a region for your whole faction, to make your clan city a rich trading place.
On the other hand I answered "Only if the game is badly designed and have bad mechanics" to the first question, and I have fears about the alignment system, as it may be very exploitable, and also that aventurine small team risk be too slow if there are big pvp exploits or dupes etc... to fix.
Its human nature. Some will login and only wants to se the world burn, others will login and do whatever they can to stop chaos. And then we have days when the mood is changing....and players will find things to fight for and others will loose things to fight for.
Another interesting question as it's my "poll with many answers" day :
Why are you interested by darkfall ?
I think many players are not all limiting darkfall to its free pvp/gank aspect, and it's why some don't understand that people may be interested by it but not by a gank fest.
It has nothing to do with "carebears wanting to ruin a game not for them" but with "people worried because they like other aspects of this game but fear griefers will ruin their fun".
1. They can succeed, but devs have to worry about the balance between new players and established players. A party of newbies should be able to steam roll a single older player that is looking to prey on them.
2. Last I looked up on information DF newbies get 2 hours of pseudo-invincibility ( cannot be attacked by a vet ). If they harm someone else they lose it, and I think that newbies could still attack newbies with in the time limit.
3. Depends how the community is.
if in DFo i will free to do want what i want i think i will make allot of stuff but the ultimate grief goal will be make some one(largest number possible) quit the game and dont play ever again
BestSigEver :P
In order:
1)Probably, too many griefers will play this kind of game : UO died for those people
2)A big world with very different regions, some secure some not at all: this is a hope
3)A survivor, mostly defending himself
4)The sandbox aspect more than the pvp (ie I like actual UO or loved SWG pre NGE): honestly i don't give a shit about the "OMFG FULL LOOT FFA PVP EEEEEEK"
Yes it is really a no brainer, quite amazing most can not see it.I think the reason is because for many that want a full loot system, they will be the first ones to quit if they can't be the guy on top always winning[or crying nerf in the forums].So for them they have nothing to lose,if it works they are thinking great,if it fails i quit and try another game that maybe i can be the top dog. This system ALWAYS fails those who hold down RL jobs, the ones that can succeed are the ones who can sit at home all day and far advance the majority of players.
What this usually equates to is not actually 50/50 but more so about 10% of the server will be those unemployed and will own the other 90%.Unless they are TOTALLY clueless, what makes there tiny brains actually think the other 90% wants to log on for the sole purpose to die and hand over their loot?Really honestly should i even have to ask that? Then those 75% quit now you divide that last remaining few in the game those 10% and again divide them into a 10/90 and then those lower half quit, now you have a VERY small amount of players in a playground that is empty..lmao ya sounds like a brilliant idea,VERY profitable for the developer /sarcasm off.In comes F2P and item malls, everyone leaves.
The PVP idea actually does not even work in PVP/FPS games, the only reason it can exist/survive is because they have several servers with different skill ratings, therefore players can just up and leave and try a server more suitable to their skill level. This and the fact that FPS games are equal as far as players go,it is not about playing longer and having better gear and it still does not work,so in MMORPG's it has ZERO chance to succeed, because it is about TIME/GEAR and you cannot move around to easier servers.
Unreal tournament was a prime example of the best ever designed PVP system, but it could not survive on that mode alone because the majority were not competitive and preffered to be in team matches or large surrounding with large amounts of players,so they could possibly get a lucky kill in.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Why would anyone want to make someone leave the game? Didn't we learn anything from UO?
I like killing just as much as the next guy but its this type of mentality that will keep Darkfall near empty population wise because thier wont be any safe area for the Victim of a person like this.
The reason the crazy ass griefers havent run most of the eve population off is due to high sec, there isnt a high sec in DF. the high sec = uninstall.
I cant wait to play Df but seriously not everyone enjoys the type of ruthless gameplay that we do.
PLaying: EvE, Ryzom
Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum

As for peoples concenrs about griefing 1, Join a clan 2, Hire Protection 3. Join a clan that polices the griefers and idiots that will roam DF, once DF releases out clan will be openly inviting quality players and MMO veterans to join our anti-griefing clan, we will be very involved in city building , PVE, and PVP and of course dispatching asshats that prey on others, so far we have over 100 peeps so far. Once release is near we will post a link to our clan forums. A person can enjoy this type of game if they think smart and die smart and with your friends having your back , its about community .
Results are rather fun so far :
q4 - for most people the ffa full loot pvp isn't the main interesting feature of Darkfall, most are here for the sandbox aspect
q1 - more than half aren't confident for a game with this feature to succeed (only 1/3 are in the optimistic no category)
q2 - but the most popular answer to how will be Darkfall is : players will finally succeed to police the world
q3 - the only problem is : far more people plan to be pks than antis, about 10 times more
