blizz says this about open beta chracters going to retail. what do u thinkl happen

colep53colep53 Member Posts: 140

this is what blizz is stated so far in faq-

"Will I get to keep my characters from the open beta?

We are still formulating our plans for the characters from the open beta and will provide more information in the near future."

i think they will have you be able to log your character in at no more than lvl 20 or somthing. like save your charcter at lvl 20 once you reach it and when you log in the relased version there youll be. i think this would be best if its possible. or worn people 20 is the limit.

what do you think they will do?

Still think there will be a wipe.  They just don't want to tell you that.  If they came out and said they were going to wipe do you think there would be nearly as many people signing up for open beta?  I don't.

When did Beta change from being a test into a free trial? The idea that people should not only have all the experience of having played for 6+ months over the rest of us, but also get to keep the characters that they made is asinine. Seriously, how stupid do you have to be to even consider something like that?

I have never heard of a game where the beta testers actually capped and were getting bored of the high-end content before the game even went OB, but it's happened with WoW. If you ask me, that's pretty f-ing sad, and I don't quite have as much hope for this game as I once did. I suppose only time will tell though. I'll tell you one thing though, if they let the testers carry over their characters I'll go straight back to GameStop and tell them to cancel my preorder of the Collector's Edition and they can keep the crappy WC novel, lmao.

I feel that Blizzard should wipe all characters before the final release. Carrying over characters from Beta is a bad idea, even with a level cap. Those who play a character carried over will have an advantage over those not lucky enough to play in the open beta. It could also put a negative spin on the economy of the game. Those who play in the open beta will be able to equipt lower level friends with better stuff and leave the possibility of low level, over equipt characters PKing (wouldn't be penalized under the Honor system).

Somewhat probable is the possibility of Blizzard carrying the open beta chars onto their test server.

This would give those players with high characters, the oportunity to still play with them while giving Blizzard a chance to test out end game mechanics right from the beginning.

... All this away from the eyes of the new comers who could get annoyed by the transfer over.

That way everyone wins. (Unlike with Aliens vs. Predator and the presidential election)

I do not think Blizzard will keep the beta characters.

It would be to big of an advantage over the new players coming into the game at launch.  Also, since I imagine your character names are unique in the WoW world, it also does not give everyone a fair chance at getting some unique character name.

While these may seem like small issues, it would raise alot of bad press about Blizzards release of a new game.

Everyone should begin at the START line, not some of us at the START line and some 1/4 into the race.

Yea I also believe it would just be wrong for others who have not been in the game to have to start from scratch while others who were in beta get to keep those characters, I mean being In beta to me is privelage enough(well for most games anyway) why would or should those players benefit, ya know just my opinion:)

Blizzard has disappointed quite a few people that were not in the closed beta lately.  I have to admit that I've been fairly disappointed in some of the marketing stunts.  It's my own fault due to getting my hopes up, but that doesn't change the fact that they made a lot of people mad.

That being said, never once did I consider not buying the game.  I only felt the way I did because I wanted to play it so much.  However, the only thing that Blizzard could do to make me honestly reconsider purchasing the game is by letting the closed and (pseudo) open beta testers keep their characters into release.

Most of what I say applies to the closed beta testers.  I wouldn't have a problem with open beta testers keeping their characters.  The only problem is that it isn't entirely open.  There is a real chance that people who want to get into the "open" beta will not be able to.  In which case they will be on an unlevel playing field come retail.

Here is the problem as I see it.  Closed beta was done to identify bugs in the game, not to be an early start to retail for a few lucky people.  They didn't do anything special to get into the closed beta.  They signed up like everyone else, and were lucky enough to get picked.  That was a privelege and should not entitle them to what most people see as a massive advantage in this game.  Even people who are level 60 and post on the official forums are saying that keeping characters is a bad idea, and they have the most to lose.

Why do I say they get an advantage?  Well, for one thing this is a PvP game.  Even on a normal server there are PvP areas, and on the PvP servers... well they are PvP servers.  So, just because someone got lucky doesn't meen that everyone else should start with a handicap.  It really just gives the closed beta testers a huge leg up on the PvP competitions.

They already have an innate advantage.  The folks who are very high levels know the game like the back of their hand now.  They know exactly where to go for the best XP, best loot, etc...  None of the rest of the people know that.  The last thing they need is to start out at a higher level than everyone else.

This is just the way I see it.  It could be completely wrong, but I can't find a single good thing about letting the CB testers or OB testers keep their characters.

The economy is also a very good point.  Many of these people got to the level they are at without having to pay the item repair tax.  Everyone in open and retail will have to pay that.  That doesn't seem fair that people who played CB for free get a monetary in game advantage over those that are P2P.

If Bliz allows everyone to play OB (during OB, everyone has to start from the beginning) then I dont see why you cant transfer your char to retail... No1 will have an advantage since everyon CAN play WoW during OB. But if only limited amount of people can play OB, then by all means that would be unfair advantage.

To answer another issues regarding level 60 people complaining that they have reached High End content during beta: I do not believe that this will be the case in retail. I believe Blizzard is a company led by smart people, I have no reason they will be dumb enough to leave level progression as it was during stress test. Even though they havent confirmed it 100% I believe they will reduce leveling speed. It makes perfect sense. Otherwise they will start loosing people couple of month after release because people wuld just "beat" WoW and would not have a lot of fun playing it.

If they dont wipe the chars i will not be playing at all, neither will anyone i know.

I would be fucking idiotic....   to put it simply and nicely

but then again i have bout 15 friends in beta with lvl 60 chars, so if they all get to keep those chars i'll just make a low lvl human pally and grief ppl with my uber gear.....   (ppl like me will ruin this game for EVERYONE if they dont wipe)

That could mean many differant things. I doubt that they will let you keep your character. Im not sure there would be a great deal of point to it considering that open beta will probably last only 2-3 weeks max...

Maybe youll get a gift on your open beta char and possibly have your lvl set to 20 or something like the first poster suggested....

I think a wipe is best.

  • RhevinRhevin Member UncommonPosts: 611

Well, this can rely on the faction how lon OB will last for. The release date is still unknown which could mean that OB could be one week or five weeks. If it were a short period of time, I don't really see an issue. I can't really see a normal person maxing out in a week or two, at least I hope not. It will actually be worse for the higher players because all items will have to be purchased off NPCs, which in a lot of games, are far more expensive than buying off a PC.

However, if OB is going to last for quite sometime, we all finally understand the meaning of "soon", then this could be a deprivation to the WoW community. Those that have played Lineage ][ should know this. As people play longer, I'm sure they get tired of fighting the enviroment so they'll hunt the "lowbies". This will draw some people away and have a substantial affect on the player community. Like in everything else, it will have its pros an cons. They only way to find out, is to wait.

I am beta testing WOW and EQ2 and I have NO expectations that I will get to keep my characters. I agree that to let beta toons to carry over to retail is absurd. I can tell you this, if they do let these high level guys carry their toons over, I will not buy this game. Why? What's the difference in that and me logging in in a month and seeing the same people with different toons at 50. The difference is this. Some people have had the game preordered for a looong time. They may not have made it to beta, but have been following the game and the forums for a year or years. They have read the conquests and complaints of others, salivating at the thought of possibly being one of the first dwarves to step foot in Azeroth. They get the game installed, patched and their character created. Here we go. Gets into the game along with all the other dwarves stepping on the land for the first time. He does his quests, trains, and moves on to the first real city and BOOM! There he is, an uber leet dood that is 60th level with the best gear and riding his steed. What a let down. You've just seen the endgame in your first 3 hours of play and the game has only been on the shelves for 4 hours.

I just think it would be a serious let down.

There should not be debates about it; a beta-wide character deletion should be standard practice by now.

I don't see why beta characters can't be rolled over into the test server. That way you have diverse characters right from the start--ready to test all levels of content additions and changes post-launch. It wouldn't affect anyone else on the retail servers, which would be new servers with isolated economies. Then beta testers have the bonus of keeping their characters they worked so hard on and the risks of playing on a test server that they are already used to ...

The reason not to do that, is this.  Why should the closed beta testers be the ones to test the brand new content?  If they want to test the new high level content they should have to start from square 1 like everybody else.  High level closed beta characters on the test server will only continue the advantage that they already have.  The advantage of knowing the ins and outs of the game before everyone else.  Like has already been said in this thread... that's a big advantage in a PvP game.

Testers agreed to test the game.  They knew from the beginning that their characters would in all likelyhood be wiped.  I honestly can't think of an MMO ever that allowed people to keep their closed characters on into retail.  I know of some that let you keep open characters, but not closed.

It really doesn't make sense for Blizzard to do that.  They would drive away a LOT of people who would have paid to play.  MMORPG.com is a relatively small subsection (based on post volume) of the fan base of people who will potentially buy WoW.  Look at how many people on these forums alone have said that they won't buy the game if Blizzard plays favorites to the closed beta folks.

I agree that they worked to get their characters to a high level.  I understand why they would want to keep their characters, they put in a lot of time.  However, it really isn't fair to those that are going to be paying to play what the testers got for free.  And seriously, it wasn't all work... I know that most people were having a ton of fun.  I would have gladly "suffered" and "worked" through the closed betaimage if I was one of the chosen few.

I think there will be a few servers that you can carry over beta characters to.

So everyone on test server 1 would go to "real server 1" or something.. but then there will also be alot of servers that start out brand new.

I didn't think they would do this at first, but Blizzard seems to be real shady about this now..

Hopefully they do wipe, though. I kno if I start on a brand new server it wouldn't affect me what level people are on other servers, but I just don't like the idea. Then you already have people on the forums bragging about being level 60, people that have the greatest equipment in the game already, etc.

Again, I know it won't affect me if I start on a brand new server, but I just don't like the idea.

Blizzard will have made a terrible mistake if they transfer any of the characters from CB, ST, or OB to retail. I feel the most fun part of playing WoW will be when everyone is starting off together, with some of the CB testers as helpful guides and mentors.

Blizzard, being the grand company they are, will surely not do such a foolish thing.
