Alot of us former AC players like to wax lyrical about how great AC was and how no game can compare... but we all had moments of great sorrow and frustration, Im sure. Quests you couldn't ever finish, uber items that got lost forever, drama and backstabbing within your allegiance... and best of all, Darktide horror stories! In retrospect they are fun to recount, so lets hear em!
Personally, my most tragic moment happened early in my AC career. I was totally new to MMORPGs, so I really had no idea what I was doing. My first char was an x-bow spec, with spear, fletching, cooking... and some other random skills.
One day my patron gave me a pyreal heavy crossbow that I thought was insanely awesome - it doubled my damage output, and became "my precious." Well, around lvl 16 I ended up at Fort Teth on accident (this is back when Teth was a major hub of activity), and spent several days eking out a living by sniping from the guard towers.
Thinking I had Fort Teth pretty much figured out, I ventured outside the fort to do some exploring and harass the local wildlife. Unfortunately, just as I was running past a fearsome gold phyntos wasp, my connection dropped. Try as i might, I could not log back in (I think the server was having issues). When I finally managed to log back in several hours later, I entered the game to find myself at a lifestone, sans crossbow.
I was heartbroken. After a few days sulking, and looking for another Pyreal crossbow, I quit the game (like the petulant child that I was) and stayed gone for about a month until I resubscribed.

One of my saddest moments also came early in my AC career. A buddy of mine convinced me to start playing, so we had our Allegiance of 2 achieving Rank 3 by using all our alts. One day I was drop-muling (that, kids, is how we moved items to/from mules BEFORE such fancy things as player housing and storage) outside of Qalab'ar when this guy comes up to me, says he's quitting the game, and proceeds to drop all these packs on the ground next to me. I thought for sure it was a scam, so I asked him specifically if I could take whatever I wanted, and he said to have at it.
Talk about a kid in a candy store! I'm picking up all sorts of great weapons and armor the likes I had never seen (mind you, I was like level 10 at the time and didn't have a clue that there was phatter loot than stuff from the vendor). I even logged in my mules to grab packs just so I wouldn't have to pick and choose before the packs disappeared from the landscape.
Then fate struck the cruelest of blows. Server crash.
Then fate struck another blow that made the cruelest of blows seem like a kiss. Character database rollback.
That's right -- I logged back in to find all of my new toys.....gone. I waited around in the vain hope that my mysterious benefactor would come back on and drop the packs again, but he was true to his word and had left the game for good. It still brings a tear to my eye....
Ooo, thats rough. I forgot about drop-muling, I bet many here have had bad experiences with that. Always a process filled with anxiety!
OMG yes, drop-muling was; well scary at times cause of latency issues in early MMOs and other players coming along while you're switching toons. I remember all the time running into a city and deep into the back of a building or a vacant area in a corner of the map.
First get your main char there, then log out and into ur alt/mule and run them back where your main is, then back to main and start dropping. Once again get back on your alt to pick up the items. Those days bring back memories, and the worst of all besides another player swiping your things was logging out and like you said the server going down and you can't get back in. Rollback or not that item[s] only stayed there for so long....
Back in those days, I was still on dial-up -- that's right, you read it correctly -- dial-up. Blistering 53kbaud!
Nothing like dodging lugians when you hear the tell-tale shriek of the modem, reminding you that once again, you forgot to disable......call waiting! DOH!
My worst experience was at the hands of another player. This was before trading was implemented. In order to trade something, you literally had to drop it on the ground at the same time as another person dropped their item, then you would run and pick it up. As you can imagine, abuse was rampant.
I remember one guy dropped the wrong item as I dropped mine. Of course I got scammed, and was so mad, since my patron had given me that item.
If I had known how insignificant the item was at that low of a level, it wouldn't have hurt so much, but I felt terrible, and simply couldn't play the rest of the day.
This one time, i was playing AC2 and bought the xpac. then... then... the next month they announced they were shutting the game down. nice scam to get more money for an xpac they knew they where shutting down.
If I had known how insignificant the Xpac was at that point in the game, it wouldn't have hurt so much, but I felt terrible, and betrayed and simply couldn't play the rest of the day.
How many delicate flowers have you met in Counterstrike?
I got a case of beer and a chainsaw waiting for me at home after work.
Leaving AC was the hardest. But it was neccessary because because I require friends to play with and everyone I had become friends with either quit or only macro'd.
My main sob story would be that I'm trying to get back onto this fantastic game, but can't because of the out-dated server technology connection methods! But I guess if we've got to reminisce....
....stepping in a portal someone has 'helpfully' summoned for you to a starter area - only to find yourself in the middles of the Direlands, surrounded by a group of Virindi waving their scythes in a menacing way....
....saving up 20 Mouldy Keys in the 3 towers, only to draw dross from the chests....
....drop muling, ah drop muling - one of the scariest parts of the game. One time I was transferring some level 20 daggers onto a new knife man I had rolled, dropped them in an isolated tower, only to log back on with my lowbie knife man to find a level 98 grabbing my stuff. His reason for this? "They're not yours - I found them lying here."
....and possibly the worst ever....
...you know what it is...
...trying to dye your clothes a different colour...
....and ending up with a pink Hoary Mattekar Robe! ARGH!!!!
my biggest sob story, besides leaving corpses all around Dereth in places they couldn't be recovered from (think I left 3 one day on a mountain side, not sure how, but i did it) was that all my friends left which made the world seem too empty to carry on in.
I remember being online and seeing the global message the Tim the Enchantor was the first person ever to hit lv126. I sent him a congratulatory message, and asked to be his vassal...he declined.
I remember drop-muling. That was a scary time.
AC was my first MMORPG too. I was in 5th grade and had a hankering for... Amuli armor I think. Thought it looked cool. I found someone who would trade it to me for pretty much all my money. Back in the day before an actual trade window... you just gave them something and hoped they'd give it to you. Well, the broad I was trading with took off with my money and didn't give me the damn Amuli armor. I was heartbroken.
Ahh, to be innocent.
