Why do the characters run so slowly?

AganazerAganazer Member Posts: 1,319

I've been following DF since it was announced about forever ago... I'm starting to have second thoughts after watching some recent videos.

My biggest issue is the run speeds. It looks more like WAR speed and less like the majority of other MMOG's. It always turns out that I enjoy the MMOG's with faster run speeds. CoX, DDO, AC all had much faster run speeds. Sorry, but wasting a lot of time getting somewhere is not content. I can explore the terrain just as well at double those run speeds without missing anything critical.

Their reason must be either realism or to slow people down and make them waste more time getting places. Realism I can appreciate, but intentionally slowing people down just to make them waste time is lame.

It certainly makes mounts more attractive, but I don't think that gimping our run speed is worth it. Just change it so that sprint speed is run speed and make sprinting a little faster. I don't think it would break the game.

The world looks beautiful. I can even deal with a sparse MOB density. I don't need a ton of melee abilities to make me happy either as long as the AI does more than just stand there, which it does. But a slow run speed can make a great game into a chore.

I would thinks its because of the self targeting.. if they ran to fast you could never hit your target. I am against this kind of targeting myself...just cause i like to roll spell casters....

Its really hard to say but i wouldnt worry about it becouse alot can change in the next 4 weeks run speeds and sounds etc can be changed in 1 small patch  and im almost positive run speed is low priority at this point

Its because you should use a mount or a ship if you want to travel somewere.

  • asdarasdar Member UncommonPosts: 662

Going faster takes more stamina, but you don't want to use stamina or you won't be able to fight. Horses allow faster travel without using stamina, but limit what attacks you can use and make you more visible.

You can sprint up to 3 mins at a time, and that is just with beginner stamina.

If you want to travel on foot at a high rate of speed, sprint.  Be advised, though, to keep a sharp eye out for opprtunistic players who might try to take advantage of your state of reduced stamina.

Stam potions will be your friend.

I dont worry about run speed as much as travel speed. IN the end, its all based on the mounts/flightpaths/teleports etc

Yeah - run speed is slow - but it won't make or break the game at this point.

BUT - if they don't fix some of the horrid animations (specifically combat ones) that could break it. If I am swinging a 2h wep and standing relatively still - I think I should have to do something more than twist my hips from left to right to swing a huge polearm. It looked pitiful. I really hope they look into that. EQ had smoother combat animations in its release.

You'd be running at that speed too if you were on meth

It's called crappy animation for starters. It's aweful floaty looking, which makes it feel like they're running in slow motion. Poor timing and no 'chaos'. It is painful to watch. Before I get mauled by the fanboys, I am a CG artist, and I do animate. THis is not a hater's analasys, its a professional one.

I seriously hope the gameplay rocks, cuz that's the only real thing left for me to hope for in this game. I loved UO when it first launched, so I am hopeful. But frankly, I don't know if I can watch this garbage for hours at a time and realize someone got paid to animate my toon.

This comment makes no sense at all.  The OP complains about slow running and you compare it to running while under the influence of amphetamines?  O.o   You do realize that meth is speed, right?  If those characters were on "meth" they'd move their asses, not drag along at a snail's pace, lumbering across the screen.

This is the answer. It would be too hard to hit targets with a bow or a spell if they were moving faster.

Some of the older MMO's I played used potions as key elements for combat and travel.

It seems to me the DF is reviving this mechanic, an in the case of running you are expected to carry stamina potions with you in order to continually sprint and have stamina left if you run into combat.

And in combat, it appears that using healing pots during the fight will be critical to winning.  Lets hope it doesn't get into the pot spamming mode that L1/L2 have.

Finally, while some people say they like faster running characters, in the interest of any sort of realism, does it make sense that anyone in heavy armor can sprint like an olympic athelete?

I always felt a cool mechanic would be for player speed to be based on carry weight, and tanks would run more slowly (if armored) and parties would have to adjust their speed accordingly

I did read that the running speed only seems slow because the world is so big. If you run past a object standing stil, you notice that the speed is "normal".

  • PolarizationPolarization Member Posts: 1,410

The reason you run so slowly is because if they let you run at a reasonable speed you could quickly finish exploring the game world and realize how empty, barren and devoid of content it is.

Its a great and simple way of increasing the amount of time it takes to do anything with a huge time sink, and because there is so little to do, you run so slowly, simple really.

Also the only way they can half assedly make the combat system and net code work(ish) is to have everyone moving like they are in molasses, and even then its still extremely frustrating trying to hit something zig zaging and side stepping whilst they warp and lag around your screen.

  • daarcodaarco Member UncommonPosts: 4,276

Yeah, they said that to. If everyone would move faster, it would drain to much power to load all the time. So im happy with the speed. You can always get a mount and run alot faster.

It's all relavite and subjective at this point.  I mean if you want the fastest, arcade-like speed, the go playing Hellgate (and yeah good luck on it living per Hanbisoft's claims... raaaaaaaeeeet).  It's very arcade-like in it's action and the characters all have quick dash, 10 sec cool-down skill (and yes a skill that you can lvl up).

As to all the vids released on Darfall and it's animation, that's relative, subjective.  Some people think it's fine at it's current speed (though this seems to be a few).  Also others realize that this could be by design as various factors come to mind (the feel of large persistent world immersion, as well as the epic feel of seeing mass armies, realistically rushing onto huge, epic battles)

However, I will say this, I wouldn't be surprised if they did something ala Hellgate, and throw in a speed burst skill based on stamina, and a skill that could be leveled.  As I think that could play a strategic part in warfare and general gameplay in-and-of-itself.  Just my opinion though.

there are 3 speeds: walk speed (for silent movement), normal speed, and sprint speed. sprint speed is quite fast but consumes stamina, which you also need for attacks. most of the time you run around on sprint speed, just like other MMOs, while managing your stam levels. eating food or pots keep stam regen high for near permanent sprinting.

Yes, I remember reading something about that in some long lost Tasos' interview lost in time... but I digress, was there ever a mention of that sprint skill is base-line skill that you can't level, or will it be a skill that the player can level up like any other skill in the game.  It would be interesting to see players making speed-based builds instead of the classic builds you see in most MMO's like the "Tank build" "Nuker Build" etc...

If you look when they are in first person and running by an object they aren't really running that slow.  They move at the pace that you would move if you were jogging by a building.  The animations make it look slower, and with how huge the world is, and everything in it you get a feeling of moving slower than other games.  They are already looking at the running/sprint setup though and aren't happy with it either.

Well if they do make sprint a skill you can level, make it such that it's not un-realistic like making your player run like the Flash.  I say probably along the lines as you level it, you can acheive a "top" speed (or speed cap) and then beyond that, if you continue leveling it, it should require less stamina so that you can outrun those who did'nt bother to go a "speed build" route per say.  Just a thought.

    i totaly agree, sadly.

Also first person view runing, without a weapon on the screen to compare your speed to the environment ..but this is a factor in other games too...

spankybus can u tell me about the animations...its is something that can be easely changed at any given time, like simply replace old animaion with a new one, or they are on very core level ov the game?   in aoc the animations were tied to the damge, not sure if this changed much..

i guess the game sounds are no problem to be changed as long as they have the same lenght, but i am not sure for animations.. thnx
