Hi all,
I'm thinking seriously about buying EQII when it comes out next week, but I didn't play EQ. My only experience in the MMORPG realm came with DAOC, which I enjoyed for a few months (would have been longer if I hadn't picked a gimped class off the bat...), and a couple of days of Horizons.
My question is: how much (and how) will my not having played EQ affect my EQII experience? Will there be a whole subtext to everything that I just won't understand?
Does anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks!!

I'm the same...I did play for about a week (EQ) just to see what it was like before I got into the EQ2 beta. IMO there is NO need for a history with EQ to enjoy EQ2...in fact in our situation "everything" is new and exciting!
I luv the game...I actually got into the WOW final stress test yesterday...started a new NE Druid and got to lvl 5 in short order and then just quit and went back to my lvl 11 Brawler in EQ2!
I think you'll have a good time. There truely is no need to of played EQ first. Did you try to get into the beta?
All I know is even though I like WOW and want to play it....I keep going BACK to EQ2 more and more!
Best of Luck

No worries, ALOT has changed from the time of EQlive and EQ2. They basicly are starting from scratch as far as setting goes. Even the land has changed considerably in the last 500 years. There are a few refernces that only EQlive players will get (like Fippy's hill) but nothing that will affect gameplay.
While they share the same name and company they are two different games pure and simple. No exp. in EQLive is required in order to play and enjoy EQ2. While EQ2 holds alot of references to EQLive they are just there for shits and giggles for veteran EQLive players. There is no need to understand past history or lore in order to enjoy this game. You will learn as time goes on, then again, I know people that have played EQLive since launch and they never bothered to take interest in the Lore anyways. If you do decide to play EQ2 my suggestion would be, do the tuts. They are much better then the ones that from EQLive and will very easily get you started. Don't be afraid to ask for help, while there is a l33t d00d faction to every game I'm sure you will find most EQ2 players to be helpful and willing to take the time to answer a few thought out questions. Hope to see ya in game.
