Just got AoC, a couple of questions.

I got Age of Conan earlier today, and it's just patching now, and I have a few questions.
1) Is there any PvP at all on PvE servers? I'm not the biggest fan of PvP servers, But I don't mind participating in a bit of PvP every now and then.
2) Are barbarians and/or HOX good for for beginners? I like the look of both, HOX more than barbarian, But HOX looks like it might not solo that well and die lots.

1) Playing on a PvP server myself, but PvE servers have PvP in border kingdoms and minigames, and that's about it. PvP server has pvp everywhere except the main cities, while the PvP on the PvP servers can be filled with gankers at times it does add a whole level of excitement to the leveling process.
2) Both barb and Hox are good classes, while the hox is a melee caster type they can dish out immense amounts of damage and are a class that can kill most classes easy when played properly. Barbs can be a bit hard to play, but if you learn to utilize the CC and anti CC the class have you will be able to tear through most classes. I have a barb at level 80, and whilst my ranger doesn't like to attack a necro i don't really fear them at all on my barb due to anti CC and pure damage output. Where the necro can freeze me and kill my ranger with SW and GoD, they cannot touch me when my barb is in their face and have unstable mind ready. they can freeze me but unstable mind will sort out the problem and then I can start dps the necro down. Have a level 36 HoX, but doubt I will grind it. the class seems like fun, but I do like the barb more. Both classes are somewhat squishy, but both classes can do lots of damage to their targets too.

How melee based is HOX?
From what I can remember on my hox it's very melee based, you used 2handed edge mostly, and you need to be up close and personal to kill stuff, The hox does have some attacks that does this excellent tho. You also have some spells, never tried that out much as I do love the combo system in the game and all my classes are combo using classes. The spells did seem to be none of the fireballs flying through air type of things but AoE damage to help you out whilst fighting melee.

Hox is 95% melee. Alot of dps, but take that with a grain of salt. You are wearing cloth and going toe to toe with everything. All my fights last maybe 5 seconds top, even boss battles ( demon form), its a quick either he has won in 5 seconds or I did.

1) Yes on PVE servers you have minigames / Sieges 48vs48 and you have Borderkingdoms (a pvp zone).
On a PVP server you can fight pretty much everywere, so if you are not a huge fan of pvp, PVE is best for you i think.
2) Barbarians and HOX are ok for beginners, i like HOX more then barbarians, HOX are really fun ! You are a mage class but you use melee, cloth and demon form, you do really nice damage but your survivability is pretty low. ( Always buy alot of Health potions and use them alot, they are cheap and really good
, you should use health pots with all classes ). Well i think HOX can be pretty hard to play for a beginner but im not 100% sure

You should choose the class you think sounds most fun and try it for a few hours, atlest to lvl 20. If you like it i think you should stick with it.

I have a HOX on a PvE, and a barbarian - for the first time in any MMO I have played - on a PvP server. I am loving my Barbarian heaps at the moment. Though I haven't got up to any PvP yet.
I have an annoying problem with the AoC forums though, Even though I'm old enough to buy and play the game in my country, I'm not old enough to access the forums, unfortunately.

But i am happy you are enjoying the game, pvp is really fun. Its even extra fun when you are a rouge and you can sneak around in stealth
. But be careful Rangers can Track people that stealth.
