Hi
I've just quit playing wow because of rubbish pvp, i preferred my xbox and my guild was falling apart. I was thinking of playing WAR and was wondering if it was worth start a mmorpg again. However i am slightly concerned about the level cap and was wondering if it is easy to level.
thx

I cancelled my subscription due to very lame and boring chunky PvP. Basically you'll be doing PvE 80-90% of the time, a much inferior type of PvE compared to WoW. The other 10% you'll find yourself looking for people to PvP, which most of the time is none or waiting upwards of 8-12 hours for ONE scenario (BG) to pop.
Basically if you hated WoW PvP, you'll hate this even more. That's not even mentioning when you finally get to endgame, or rather the missing endgame, of demolishing, pillaging and burning your enemies city to the ground, you discover you basically don't fight other players but do a repeatable public quest, again, PvE.
I'd definitely wait a year or two and then check back and see if WAR died before purchasing. WAR was one of the worst MMORPG's I've tried yet. Sure, it's fun for the first 10-20 levels, then it's all downhill from there. Mind you I didn't get one single scenario (BG) to pop in all that time.
WAR is very much a rushed release, this game is nothing more than a scenario grind.
basically this game was advertised as "war is everywhere" when indeed it is "war is in scenarios"
This game seems/seemed to be aiming for both the pve and pvp crowd...i.e the wow guys and the DAoC guys and to be honest they missed both...and by a long way,the pve is ok some ok stories and quests with the usual fed-ex quests...nothing inspirring.
The pvp ...my god where to start there, basically the game is a scenario pvp game(think battle grounds if you come from wow)with the odd open rvr that is just a gank feast, most of the time you will gather say 24 ppl for open rvr ....but cant find anyone to fight ...maybe the odd 2 or 3 guys....you will do a keep siege but that ends up as a very fast pve experience.
The best they can do atm is add new scenarios and new classes(lol new classes to do the same scenarios?the mind boggles).
Save your cash,Atm I am not even sure the devs know what they want for this game, let alone what the players want.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

I'd say give it a try. Common opinion is that war's pvp is more fun and balanced(group balance approach) than i.e wow's. Game is all about rvr- realm vs realm and most of the content is rvr centered. There are also pve instances which aren't as good as wow's are, but imo there is no big difference on pounding NPCs after you know how to beat them.
War has 18 classes atm, with 2 more coming this March along with the new rvr dungeon, rvr fixes etc.
Lore is rich and quests are easily soloable. You should have no problem leveling. Best thing is, you can level only by pvp if you wish, getting good gear from influence rewards and renown ranks. (btw there are 40 "normal" levels and 80 renown levels gained exlusively from rvr).
Be sure to join active server, because population has massive impact on fun in war. If you are in NA, someone could give you trial key (try asking on warhammeralliance.com).
In the end, you won't know if it suits you if you don't try it. I like it, but I'm sure that's irrelevant because people are different with different taste.
Have fun

What you say was true until Mythic allowe free character transfers. Mythic clearly made mistake with releasing with too many servers.
Most servers are now well populated.

Pretty much what everyone said above....if Mythic were to remove all the scenarios, forcning players to fight in the huge PvP areas I think it would be an ok game again.
well this is from a guy that enjoys the game and for me it says everything that is wrong with the game.
I guess you can basically make up your mind from this, mindless pvp scenario's to lvl and you can easily solo everything in a mmo.......I rest my case.

I have a feeling some of these posters left the game before War made some changes Open RVR is very active now always pvp fights going on. I don't even Que up for scenerios anymore No need to the pvp is rocking in the rvr areas. I personally did not like WoW pvp but i love warhammer pvp
And don't let them fool you though the open RVR is a Lot more active than it was a month ago. They added rewards in the rvr areas now so the best loot is from doing open RVR. And there is nothing like defending a keep of 24 enemys whith just a small group of you.
I had stopped playing for a while but i got like 8 months of prepaid game cards for christmas and came back and I am having a blast again. The Pve leaves much to be desired though. But my new char is 20 now and i have not done one pve quest all I have done is Open RvR.
But to tell the truth only way to know is pick up the game and try out the month you get with it Tier one PvP is always pretty active but if you get a little discouraged Push through till yyou hit 11 and start doing the T2 open Rvr Last night we had two warbands running around fighting off destruction. 48 people on order taking keeps and battle field objectives and destro must have had at least 30 of them running around we had a huge fight that lasted many hours.
WAR is fun if you like scenarios (like BGS) there are more of them - 3 in tier 1 and 2, and 6 tier 3 and 4. Not all of them queue quickly, but as they're only 15 minutes max - I've never had to wait long to get in one. If you like BG's - this is the same without so much AFK crap/no twinks and you can strictly level doing these without ever doing any pve. You can go in at level 1 if you choose - it ranks you to lvl 8 (same for every tier you rank up to the _8 level), but not the spells/abilities - so you aren't at a complete disadvantage.
If you like PvE too - the quest chains can be interesting, although the two sides destro/order really only cross in the RvR lakes so you won't get ganked and are not flagged except in those areas. High levels coming to the lwr areas get the cowards reward of being turned into a chicken - there are actually quests to run the RvR lakes as a lvl 1 chicken.
There isn't alot of chat LFG, as most groups are open so you can join at will/leave, etc. Only the dungeons or tier warband raids can you be waitlisted to get in.
There are dungeons, ToK (Tome of Knowledge) unlocks, public quests, live events, etc.
The classes are varied with more balance than in WoW (I like WoW and I'm playing it too at the moment), but there isn't one OP class that will kick everyone to the curb. Every class brings something to the group/warband. The good side is good and the bad side is bad - not everyone carebear feel good. You will not confuse an orc in this game with a human - the start areas are not vanilla boring and the theme carries through the game.
Artistically its a beautiful game, the cities are worth the 2-3 hours to explore as they are cities.
Honestly I will say though I expected more pvp - being flagged 100% of the time in conflict all the time - it's not that. It's a fairly safe pve environment except in the rvr lakes or scenarios. That said, the rvr which I've experienced almost daily - is fun. 2-3 warbands on each side trying to take/defend a keep, etc.
One other nice thing - the developers really seem to care and listen to what the players want. Not just the QQing but actual what can/will make it a better game.
It's worth a try if you can get a free trial. Pick a busy server and get in a good guild.

if you love PVP, then yes. This game is all about the pvp and with the latest content and patch along with 2 new classes, now is a great time to join the WAAAAGGGGHHHH !!
well i got WAR about 2 weeks ago and been playing with a friend. it does seem very boxed in. much blander than wow and not open world really but i like the dark overtones it offers(i play a witch elf lvl 20 atm)
then again im just sick of wow and have been for about.......a year and a half now? i think so sadly.i'm not overly competitive or a hardcore raider. by the time i get to a point in WOW where i sit around and do nothing while ppl 'try' to organize a raid and in the end do nothing( or just spend hours in the same place 'doing nothing' getting locked)... its time to go and mess with another toon.
ive looked into eq2 Vangaurd and now WAR
all 3 have perks just like WoW does but i havent found anything yet that totally grabs me.
this is how i felt with trying a new mmo so far. this is just MY opinion. im not categorizing these or saying i know all about them. personally i would like more insight on all 3
Vangaurd = seems awesome but is so buggy and unpopulated (and when my gf went to dl it off Stationlauncher it kept crashing ) so i didnt keep acount up long.
EQ2= i started it and kinda liked (thinking about going back maybe) but quit very early in because i had things going on and then Wotlk came out. one problem (main one that would make me not want to go back and stay) is it seemed that all the abilities had a cast time. even meele. and i dont remeber any instant cast. of course i was very early.
WAR= i love the dark style i have with dest. and i actually find the pvp scenarios funner than wow's just due to the fact that from my experience it seems both sides play more like a force moving together.they usually pop frequent if i search all scenarios. a bit longer if i single one out and que. and its not a bad idea running around doing some quest while u wait for a que to pop. but i cant say it totally grabs me . i like my toon, it doesn't lag for me and the ui-gameplay-abilities are all workable and not laggy.im ready to know how i'll like it endgame but from what i read...there isnt much of one
sorry to the original poster. i kinda invaded ur thread with other topics but this is my first post and i didnt feel like starting my own. yours fit my agenda so ty
just to add im not insulting any of the above listed games. if i could afford it i would have active accounts on all of them.
(trying to cut off flammers. and those who dont read all of a long post)
Sadly it's comments like this that make people join broken and empty MMO's. This game is all about solo play PvE mostly and a boring one at that and most people with just a bit of insight with MMO's know 2 new classes doesn't make up for broken and missing content.
Why stop at 2? Why not try for 10, 20 or 400? In the end you'll still get a more unbalanced and empty game, just with more classes to go through it all with.
I can heartily recommend WAR if you're into PvP. World PvP in particular is a lot of fun and I prefer to level my characters almost exclusively through world PvP. It's very addictive and difficult to put down once you get into it, I find.
I'm guessing most os the above posters either play on a really low pop server or they haven't played the game in awhile on the more populated openRVR servers. I just started this game a few days ago, and much to my surprise, I'm having more fun than I've had in years on an mmo. Sure, the game could use some improvements, and I've heard the end game is lacking, but Mythic isn't giving up on the game and with proper planning and additions, this game has the potential to be one of the top mmorpgs around.
As for world pvp not happening; that's just nonsense. I play on Dark Crag (I've got two accounts, one for order and one for destruction) and even in the wee hours of the morning, they're are tons of people fighting each other.
So, I say give it a try - get someone to send you a buddy key and you'll have nothing to lose.
8-12 hours for a SC? You must have been on a REALLY REALLY low pop server. 30 min - 1 hour real early in the morning, maybe.
I would try the game and see if you like it. PvP involves a lot more teamwork than WoW. You won't have a chance to win vs certain classes.
PvP can get frustrating when you play with a bunch of idiots or farmers. Sometimes people want easy renown (honor) and influence (reputation) so they avoid other factions so they can take battle objectives without resistance. Other times there are huge battles that are a lot of fun. Sometimes in SCs (BGs) your team gets rolled and everyone gives up. If you played WoW you're used to this. Especially if you were Alliance, you remember the "Just let them win" shit. I thought people who played this game would be more about PvP. I guess not. I've realized you can't avoid these type of players, and they will be in any MMO with PvP.
If you have a good computer lag issues are pretty rare. The only time I have problems is when there are 100s of people in the area. It's gotten a lot better since release, but still happens. A big concern for me is the keep contribution system. If you're unlucky (like me) it could be 3 months before you see a gold bag drop. I finally got one today after 3 months and inside was the same exact piece I've had. If you don;t mind PvE for gear, it's a lot easier to get (at least for me). I hate PvP so the keep contribution system is really pissing me off right now. Other people don't seem to have my problem, though.
I would get a trial from someone, if you can, and try it out. Only you can decide if you like the game.
I say try it, get a key if at all possible. You cant go by what people say in this forum. For some odd reason people who quit the game troll this forum and pounce on these typw of threads to tell you just how bad the game is.
Its not a bad game, it has got very good reviews across the game review sites. Some people just didnt like it, and they have to make sure they tell every single person on this forum that... Thats not to say theres no problems in the game and there needs to be fixes. But you just need to try it yourself the posters here would have you believe its another "Dark and Light" game and that just isnt the case at all.

dont listen to people like this who clearly have no idea of what they are talking about. Im not saying WAR is a perfect game it is far from it, but it is a fun game and does revolve largely around PvP. To say it is all about solo PvE is a completely stupid comment, when i played i did very very little solo PvE, you can level entirely by this method if you want but i just ran around questing in between scenarios and other stuff. Besides scenarios i also encountered a lot of huge random battles going on over keeps and just for fun etc there is plenty of PvP in this game and i shall be resubbing this month now they are working on some of the major flaws i quit because of in the first place.
sounds like another disgrounted constomer.
wows pvp is a joke compared to wars.
the quest could use some extra xp and decent gear that is not laughed at compared to the armor you would get from your average drops from enemy players or npcs in keeps and bos.
the biggest problems with warhammer is the pathing of monsters
the xp diffrences for killing npcs and enemy players
and the lack of diffrent armor designs and weapons to choose from when playing your charecter.
and last but not least the tropheys that you set up on your charecter need to be fixed cause they are still bugged.
the siege weapon oil need to be on a timer for when it can be repaired, 1:30 timer would be good enough.
that way someone defending a keep can not make it so that a entire wb cant get through the door.
as for everything eles, it seems like the game is headed towards a brighter future
The start is fine. The problem is other half of the game.
I am tempted to say its worth starting but not finishing, but really its not worth starting because its not worth finishing.
The T3 and T4 PvP is much worse than t1/2 both tactically and strategically. Tactically the classes die much faster in the second half and have annoying and half baked CC. Strategically the game never develops past the baby steps of T1/2. Its just Point trading over and over.
T4 itself is riddled with pointless PvE as reward and/or cockblocks for PvP. The palyers agitate for them to fix T4 PvP and make it less hollow and balance the classed/CC and then they add more PvE or another class. Frankly it boarders on insane.
Sadly it's comments like this that make people join broken and empty MMO's. This game is all about solo play PvE mostly and a boring one at that and most people with just a bit of insight with MMO's know 2 new classes doesn't make up for broken and missing content.

Yeah I have to say that at this point the initial statement is just a lie. Sure at realease I can see people saying this.
But with PvE grinded out set pieces as the centerpiece and barrier of/to PvP and the way Battlefield objectives are just traded and the cherry on top is the first guy to PvP rank 80 did so by running at every opportunity and killing BFO NPCs.
Well no this game is not all about PvP. That is just preposterous.
Then look at the statement itself. It never mentions any of these things getting improved just BS marketing crap about 2 new classes. Yay! Play a new shiny in a broken system. Go Read the Call to Arms thread on VNboards, where Mark Jacobs announces these classes. Even the fanbois rip him a new one.
