HellGate: London: Going Free to Play

SzarkSzark News ManagerMember Posts: 4,420

Despite the game's stated end date of January 31st, HanbitSoft, the developer and publisher of Hellgate: London says that the game will continue to run as a free to play title.

Although it is slated to stop operating in the West on January 31, multiplayer online title Hellgate: London will continue on here as a free-to-play game, according to comments from Korean publisher and developer HanbitSoft.

The announcement comes in spite of a decision by Namco-Bandai, which co-published the game through an agreement with Electronic Arts' EA Partners, to terminate the game's servers.

I hope they are talking about the US and EU version and not just the asian servers. If so, that is great news for people who play the game. I wonder if the servers are going down even for a short timespan or is it going to continue to run straight through the previously announce closure date.

If this applies to the US version, I will most asuredly be installing my copy again today.

Anyone know if the free2play changes also include former subscription content? It would be nice to be able to access Stonehenge, etc..

Thanks for the update though, cheers.

No offense to the two above, but it clearly states it is for the global community. They even stated they own everything that has to do with Hellgate London. Not to mention the fact they mentioned the West in the information. All these clues, yet you two can't come up with that assumption. Amusing the least. Just to clear things up, go read the forums. There is where your answers lie.............

Now NCsoft should make a similar announcement concerning Tabula Rasa and I'll be happy.

    I couldn't agree more :)

That would truly be icing on the cake, I've been hoping they would keep TR alive on a f2p model. Fingers crossed.

Amusing indeed, that you choose to belittle me and another user based on your own assumptions.

Go read the forums? you mean the official US forums that have no updated info on this as of yet? In fact, even Tiggs expects it to be a rocky five days or so ahead, seeing as there has been no news of this change in events yet:

If you honestly think that just because they use the term global I should blindly consider my version of the game to be "alive and well", then I'm sorry to say sir, but my own level of personal amusement has just risen exponentially.

Thank you for the quick burst of comedy. Keep on following the other sheeple.

Hanbit have been all talk so far when it comes to Hellgate. I'm certainly not holding my breath hoping for a reprieve for the game.

If they ever actually deliver anything - to Korea or anywhere else - I'll be surprised. And happy. But mostly surprised.

Because they are. HanbitSoft's ownership and intentions have NOTHING to do with either their legal or financial ability to roll the game back out in a given part of the world.

Of course, we knew you were just looking for a fight as soon as you followed "No offense..." with "There's a reason I belittled you." But hey, at least you're doing your part to prevent pointless, off-topic replies from clouding the dicussion.

Agreed... I own both games and would play them again if they were F2P.... That said, I wouldn't pay a subscription fee to play either one.

There going to release game update's aswell, WOOT!

Quote( by Gamasutra): The next "large-scale" patch, according to HanbitSoft, will be released "soon," and will combine the game's two play modes to unify its communities. The company also plans class balance improvements and further distinction between the game's five acts.

Excellent, Happy days are here again, dark clouds are going to clear up, everyone put on a happy face..then get your guns, and grab a sword,(or two!) and let's go hunt undead, YEAH!

You do realize everything I have stated is in context with the discussion and news posted at hand, right? You do also realize he stated I belittled him, and I was only mocking the point, right? Plainly put, Hanbitsoft owns the game, regardless of the legality behind it and what Tiggs says on the board. It will be brought out for US and EU members through Hanbitsoft. So before you go riding someone else's back, search warcry. And if hes not willing to use a common search engine such as google for information that would of came up on page 1 nevertheless. And this is not to compund the fact that it would of took him less time then the reply. Then it's his own fault. The users on hell-gate tend to bypass info. Especially when Tiggs is working for the company in legality issues with the "other" company. Now before you post again and defend someone else, go read the warcry information posted. And lets not talk about who's assumptions are wrong. It's right there, in plain writing. And since that's all that has been said, I think we are done here, right? =)

Exactly, although I couldn't be less concerned about his opinion

All credibility was shot when he contradicted himself by beginning the statement by fully admitting he was being abusive (with no concern whatsoever for it, a simple "no offense" is supposed to suffice, how laughable) and then attempting to arrogantly conclude it by acting as if nothing was done wrong and somehow those of us genuinely interested in info were at fault.

    Priceless.

Then theres the fact that the article in question on Warcry (where hanbitsoft released the previous info he refers too) was retracted only days later in a similar statement made by hanbitsoft to clear up any confusion regarding Hellgate remaining stateside.

Until I see something official on the website/forum belonging to the game I paid for, nothing is certain and the fact that people who have been an integral part since the beginning (such as Tiggs) are skeptical is even more reason for others to feel the same way at the present time.

Yes, I browse Warcry occasionally. However, I have no obligation to do so because someone on an internet forum thinks I should, whether that be prior to seeking info or asking questions elsewhere or not.

What I do find sad, is that people cannot even comment on an article these days without some arrogant prick storming in to flex the size of his e-manhood. Grow up and quit contributing to the problem, when you could change your attitude and become part of the solution.

They hope to keep players though so I wouldn't be surprised if they keep it up or have someone else does.

    Reading the HanbitSoft Blog LINK

It reads like Asia only will be getting the free to play model. But I've been known to be wrong . Hope i am this time too

Well so much for this false information.  You get a DNS error if you try to contact the server.

hold up a sec and think about it logically... the servers Namco/Bandai 'inherited' from Flagship are no longer there. Thats a given, but that doesn't mean the information is false.. remember its almost certainly NOT going to be the same old servers resurrected if and when Hanbit give green light for EU and US.. a small patch to the client telling it to look elsewhere for servers will fix that. Think about it..

I've seen a lot of misleading stories posted about this.  MMORPG isn't the first to do it.

There are no announced plans for free-to-play servers in NA/EU.

Even more misleading is the way it's worded in the story. "Hellgate: London will CONTINUE as free-to-play" seems to imply that it won't be shut down, while anyone who bothers to check can easily see that it already has been.

     I could not agree more.

It's gone in EU/NA. If they attempted to do so  you can guarantee there would be legal ramifications as Namco Bandai has been very outspoken on the fact that they own the rights in those territories. Furthermore, everyone would have to start over, it is not like Bandai would happily send them server data. I don't see this happening in North America/ EU at all, and furthermore, the hellgatelondon.com site no longer exists.
