The REAL reason why this isn't out in the states!

First time posting on this site, but view it all the time to get my MMO news...

TCOS is a game I am very excited about, but like many have been wondering WTF is going on with Acclaim... here is the reason straight from the horse's mouth.

TCOS will be a F2P game for American players... that is why there is a delay.

Go to Acclaim's site and view the David Perry speaks flash movie and wait til the end of it.  There is your answer.  This might be old news to some, but hopefully this will give some hope to the few that are dying to get their hands on this game.

Enjoy!

Wow this is news to me, TCOS is going to be F2P. Well this game just crashed and burned in my eyes. F2P = Pay to win, and thats not my style of MMORPG'ing. More power to the guys who like F2P games. This game looked like it had some depth.

WTF? Since when did this come to light? The game was said to be free to download and play for the first 7-8 levels then you had to pay a monthly subscription to continue past that point. IF TCoS does in-fact become a no-kidding F2P game then I will not even bother trying it out.

Free to play is fine with me, monthly fees suck, and if I have to pay $10 for a mount or something big deal, its still much cheaper than $15 a month whether I feel like playing or not.

I don't believe this game is gear based like most MMO's where gear >> skill+smarts in PvP, so I don't know what kind of items they would be selling.

Same here, F2P seems to be a scary trend for online games these days.  I was looking forward to this but now I am put off by F2P model.  I'd rather pay monthly if it's good.  And David Perry can't be wrong.  If the co-founder of Shiny Ent. gives this game the thumbs up, then why does it have to go w/ a F2P model?

A lot of people pay alot more than 15 a month in an item mall. Thats why its pay to win. No matter what items they would sell, the items that come out of a item mall  exced earned items. I am sure at the start that the item mall will be relitively balanced, more so like an easy button. But as the game ages and new Items are added thats when it turns into pay to win. Every F2P game follows this format.  Hook people to start playing with promises of the item mall not selling OP items, then once your hooked they slowly add stronger and stronger items in the item mall. You either buy these items or fall behind.

Yes and might I add it is insidiously greedy to to prey upon the human psycological need to compete.  I think F2P models also set a precedent for sloppy game design (though it might not be the case with TCoS as it seems well-received).  However imagine a this to be the future model of mmo games... this trend is really scaring me for the future of mmo gaming/development.

who said anything about an item mall? it's true a lot of F2P mmo's have them, but this is one of the first Next Generation games. THey don't need the money. Because they  have funding from multiple company's. they will probably do smething after a while but it's good to go and payed for for now. Also, you said F2P in America. a lot of the players seem to come from Europe. It could be that because they don't have a large multitude of players in America they want to promote it there. No matter what, it looks like a great game.

The game will not be F2P.  If you listen to what he says he mentions that they just announced that they bought the rights to Spellborn.  That happened a long time ago.  Maybe at the time they were planning to make the game F2P but that has changed since then.  Many people were confused by this and the developers of the game made it a point to state on the official game website, www.tcos.com, that the game WOULD NOT be F2P.  They used caps and everything.  Look at my user name.  I've been following the game for a long time.  It is NOT F2P.  Acclaim has said themselves on the www.spellborn.acclaim.com forums that the game would not be F2P and there would be no item mall.

"1. Will The Chronicles of Spellborn be Free 2 Play?

    - Yes and No. TCOS will be free to download, and will have a free zone where you will have the chance to learn the game. Once you reach Fame level 7and get approximately 90% towards Fame level 8, a gameplay limit will occur. The player will be able to continue accepting new quests and killing monsters, however no fame in any way shape or form will be gained. Because of this, quests are not able to be completed either. There will also be no PeP gained or item drops and players will be restricted to travel within Hawksmouth and Aldenvault."

This can be found in the General Discussion forum at www.spellborn.acclaim.com under the thread FAQs - Updated 12/12.

Don't start getting worried, people.  The game is not being delayed because of this.  In fact, think about it, why would it being F2P delay it in the first place?  So they could set up an item mall?  They've had rights to the game for a long time now, they could've set everything up already.  The game is being tested, I'm guessing internally, on the Acclaim servers and will be released after that.  That's the idea I've gotten from reading the forums on the acclaim spellborn site.  It has been said by the mods over there a few times in uncertain terms.

I hope this has cleared up any confusion on the issue.

I don't think it will be free to play.  Its a good game, but I wish they would have handled distribution better.  The cities are great.  I just can't pay them because they won't take my money.  At least I can still play the trial.

Wait, wait, wait, did you just say what I think you said? You did LOL. If you think your going to get to play it for free without Acclaim having a way to make money on it you are sorely mistaken. I dont know what world your living in but companies dont give stuff out for free without some strings attached to pull in a cash flow. An MMO has fees to keep the servers up and running plain and simple.

What you said makes as much sense as a guy who got laid off work, who doesnt look for a new job untill all his savings is used up.

Now I will admit I may have jumped the gun when it comes to an item mall. But if its F2P i cant see any other way to bring in income unless its monthly fee. Thus far the MMO genre is monthly fee or item mall(in games that are even remotly worth playing). I dont know of any other way.  Since he said its going to be free that kind of kills the monthly fee payment option.

Edit: just read tcosaddict's post. Glad to hear that tcos will not be f2p.

It will most definitely NOT be F2P.  Especially without an item mall, lol.  How else would they cover their costs?  In-game ads?  Not likely, especially since the game is actually developed and designed by a separate company that would run the game, P2P, simultaneously with the Acclaim version.  That doesn't even make sense.  Trust me when I say that the game is not F2P and that the video mentioned in the OP's post is outdated.  Like I said, the same video says they just announced that day that they bought the rights to Spellborn.  That happened August 20th, 2008.  So six months ago he said that.  The official game site and the acclaim site have both said it will not be F2P and also said that there won't be an item mall.  Please go read this thread.

It will tell you everything you need to know about Acclaim's plans for the game.

To reiterate:  THE GAME IS NOT F2P

Yeah free sounds pretty good to me also.......I dont need to be the most uber player on the planet and I dont like monthly fees either, especially if I'll only play a couple months......I'd like ot try it and free is certainly alot better than paying 50 bucks for the game then another 30-45 bucks for 2-3 months.....At least we arent out a hundred bucks if the game isnt any good.

"...We signed the rights to spellborn which a gigantic europian mmo, that we're gonna take in U.S. and release it for free..."

This means we are not paying to download the client and he previously said that their main funds come from a f2p item mall model.

But when? Until then Atteeeeention!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyzHjug4Lic&feature=related

Anyone care to name even one pay to play Acclaim online game/mmo?

Far as I know, ALL Acclaim online games/mmos are F2P with item mall. You really think spellborn will be the magic exception? lol

Especially when TCoS can't even get people to pay in the markets it's already released in.

HAHAHA! Man you made my day. I am going to laugh for quite some time over this post.

So you think investors are a charity organisation? lol.

The OP is wrong, the video interview is old and the game will be P2P 15$/month.

  • AganazerAganazer Member Posts: 1,319

I think what he means by 'free' is that you won't be required to buy a $50.00 box just to start playing. So the game is free, the unlimited trial is free, but the subscription is not.

It is a great business model and I hope that future MMOG's do what Spellborn is doing.

    I just want to explain.

"Free" as in free to download you don't need to pay for a box in a retail outlet.

"Free to Play" as in the first few levels are in a Free to Play Area. If you want to move beyond that area once you reach its level cap you will need to subscribe.

The term "Freemium" where a portion is free the rest is premium content has been used to describe this model.
    Hope this helps.

Yes, I do think it will be the "magic exception" because they've said so themselves.  You're right; all of their games are F2P.  However, Spellborn is a P2P game already released in the western hemisphere.  It is already in English and the IP ban in place is limited to the website, not the game client.  It can and has been easily beaten through proxies.  I've done it, myself.

Those doubting the words of myself or Xenageo, both of us are spellborn forum frequenters, can trust those of TheHistorian.  He's the site admin on the spellborn site run by acclaim.  If you can't believe him, then you won't be convinced until it's released as P2P.

Thank you. I would like to know the server locations for people that will play from the rest countries of Europe.

Will there be separate servers for players from U.S and the rest countries of Europe or we shall play in a U.S Server?

You're right. And then, guess what? People get to level 7 ( end of "trial" ) and that's it. No money given.

And the few that do try to pay find out that the IP ban works very well at preventing payment from areas outside their market. So again, no money given.

Like I said above, people aren't willing to pay for the game where it is already released. I highly doubt it will do any better here.

Add to that the fact most people wouldn't pay Acclaim to scratch their butts, much less pay for an Acclaim game monthly.

  • SigrandSigrand Member UncommonPosts: 367

If people are as anti-acclaim as you say then they won't play the game to begin with.  Just because people aren't willing to pay for something doesn't mean the provider will stop selling it.  Somehow movie theatres still exist despite the fact that like 50% of the population would rather pirate the product.  That's a made up statistic so don't bother asking me to cite my source.  The point is that if they can charge for something, they will.  With both Acclaim and the TCoS Dev Team saying that it will not be a F2P game I have to take their word for it.  I'm sure when they entered into a contract it stated that the game would be P2P globally.  If Acclaim wanted to have a free version of the game I doubt the devs would be willing to go along with it.  Anyway, the facts have been stated and cleared up enough times in this thread.  If anyone is still confused about the issue then they'll have to wait for the release to see that it's P2P.

Also it isn't just that people aren't willing to pay for it where its released.  Many clans are international and won't play on the servers that are up because it would separate them from the rest of the world.  Only about 7 countries are currently able to play.  Maybe 9.  A lot of players are waiting for Acclaim to launch so they can actually play together.
