So what happened on Jan 27th? LOTRO Population boom

Congrats Turbine, LOTRO is now the 2nd most popular subscription MMORPG among xfire users. Makes me want to come join the fun (yea, I wanna hop wagons).

What do you think it was? The numbers went up on the 27th when they normally should not have, and the xfire minutes DOUBLED.

Was it the rerelease of a free trial that I didn't see? Or just better advertising for the existing one? Or did WoW announce something that upset a lot of people?

Cool to see anyway, go lotro!

EDIT: Sorry for waste of space. Just read that there in an Xfire contest going on.

And I also just saw another thread on this.

WOops :O

Reason may be that Turbine is supporting Xfire.

    Roses are red
    Violets are blue
The reviewer has a mishapen head
Which means his opinion is skewed

Xfire never has and never will be a viable source for subscription numbers or an indication of whether a game is good or not.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

Nonetheless, I have seen a good rise in population since Mines of Moria... and the population has stayed fairly steady... that, and I have noticed even more people since the trial was brought back. Turbine has been doing a lot better job in promoting LoTRO with Moria as well. You are very welcome to join :) It's a nice, casual, PvE game with a great storyline(s) and beautiful scenery. :)

LOTRO pupulations are very very good atm. I have played for 3 days and i was very surprised to see so many people everywhere. If you are worried that there will be noone to lvl with dont be! People are everywhere. And i have seen more low lvls then i have seen lvl 60s. All and all things are going very good for LOTRO.  I have been looking for a longterm game since WoW but i have been uable to find one to stick to. But i think i will be in LOTRO for a very long time the game is so much fun =)

Its probably a combination of the Xfire competition (same thing happened with EVE a month ago) and also that the US trial is back and that Europe are having a welcome back to LotrO week!

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

I believe that a good point to take away from this thread is the fact that Turbine is actually promoting their game, unlike several other MMOs on the market today. Everquest II released an expansion around the same time as WOW and LOTRO but the latter two are the ones that you actually heard about. AoC and War aren't doing much promotion either so when a game like LOTRO takes just a couple steps forward it's going to get noticed. Here's to hoping that Turbine continues with the marketing and possibly steps it up even further so as to clearly define LOTRO's overall position in the genre.

    This sentence is false.

I think the very good reviews that mines of moria got are the reason for the increase.

I just started playing this past weekend. I think a big reason for the increase of new players is word of mouth. Just doing the turorial and I'm loving the game so far. My only complain about it is the main webpage doesn't really give much infomation on the game, but I think that is mostly because I am so use to WoW's webpage.

I don't see myself leaving WoW to play Lotro, but I do see myself paying for both games each month.

And dont let us forget that Lotro is the best PvE game around....maybe that is what keeps people playing....and starting alts so low level content is allways inhabited.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Eventho XFire isn't fully reliable, still you can notice the population increase the last 2 months with your own eyes.

At least on our RP server here in Europe.

Haven't seen that many people across all levels and zones in a long time.

Hence, I am even starting to get fed up with the sudden lag and stuttering increase the last few weeks. /facepalm

I don't know what Turbine and Codemasters did the weeks, but there are sertainly a lot of people playing again.

"I don't know what Turbine and Codemasters did the weeks, but there are sertainly a lot of people playing again."

Advertisement I suppose. One way or another: publicity on forums like these, good ratings on sites like these, good word of mouth, people trying out WAR and WotLK and not enjoying them as much as they thought, etc.

Back in EvE. Started with BatMUD. Main MMOs have been EvE and DAoC.
