Darkness Falls in DAOC. Nothing I've played has topped it imo.
Yep, because players had to watch their backs. At any time, the other side could take over the zone and start pouring in. This kept folks on their toes and kept things exciting.
For me, its definetly Requiem Online. Chaste Sanctum and Ruins of Lament. Its the instances in this game that keeps my playing. They are all optional but those 2 in particular are well designed. I am not sure about a few instance since I have not tried them.
Best dungeon experience + nstance is an oxymoron. Quality dungeon experiences cannot be had in an instanced environment. My fondest dungeon experiences were from classic EQ. Open dungeons were unpredictable.
Yes, so unpredictable in fact, you never knew what number in line your group was to fight the boss, because you just strolled down the end of the dungeon (as it had been cleard allready by the 10 groups before you)...and waited in like with the rest of the campers adventurers.
Or you got killed, by the campers adventurers!.

I desagree with just about everything here. Just because you dislike instances for w/e reason does not automatically mean that anything in an instance just CANNOT be a quality expirence to ANYONE. I've played tons of non instanced dungeons and it always ends in annoyance. Yes it does add a bit of fun competing over a particular mob sometimes. But honestly it gets old. After the 24th day you log on to get a mob and can't because it's being camped by 24 other groups it gets a tad annoying.
I've had fun times in non instanced dungeons but i've had alot more FUN experiences in instanced ones. Expecially at later levels I mean how many super strong world saving hero's is the world supposed to have? It would be like pen and paper DND and on your way through castle Ravenloft another pen and paper group just came to your house and told you, you couldn't finish cause they already did it earlier. I personally lose a feel of immersion when this super dangerous dungeon is filled with a hundred other people who are fairing just fine.
I'm not saying non instancing is bad i'm just saying i've had better experiences in instances. Just don't assume because you don't like something that makes it dumb or wrong.
i played EQ2 on venekor ((rp pvp)) and for sure ya blood starts pumping if ya see a group iof the enemy ahead ^^.
But camping for the race is just awefull, i wouldnt have the time..i need a clear head at work that means about 5 hours sleep .
DDO i can agree, realy nice dungeons.. but then i was just dragged behind while the group
steamrolled through it, me beeing a pure healing bot 8(.
Total switch from the joy i had priming the dungeons solo.

Dude don't be so cynical. I just went to the post office, it was such an awesome dungeon. There were a bunch people there I had never seen before and I got to chat with them in line and stuff while we camped the help window spawn. Although its the only MMO I have played where the Boss actually took some loot.
i'd say Vanguard had some of my most favourite dungeons. Best group/player memories in a dungeon would easily be WoW, everyone a noob in a dungeon (like Stratholme) and trying their best not to get smashed to bits by things we never saw coming.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds -Solid non level based game -Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
Almost any dungeon in EQ Classic (prior to expansions and instancing) were just phenominal fun. Lower Guk,Paw,Mistmoore etc. Camp checks being called all the time etc. Was just so much going on.
Not fun at all. I hate camping with 50 other guys. The newer games with instances are a lot better. Nothing beat 5 guys going into a H dungeon without the fear that oh no .. the boss is already dead and there are 50 people in front of us.
I'm thinking of the mischievous approach, such as entering a dungeon zone and finding corpses everywhere. Or hiding behind a tree and watching a hug train of monsters wax everyone trying to enter the zone (i.e., Unrest).
It's sort of like watching a bunch of free climbers at a crowded spot on the weekend. All it takes is one noob to start falling before some of the rest get dragged down. In a dungeon analogy, this can be quite chaotic and exicting. I guess there is the in-game drama it all stirs up.
There is good fun in that, too, you know.
Not really. Plus usually that was NOT what happened. Usually during peak hours, EVERYTHING is the dungeon is killed, and there are many people lining up at spawn spots to kill the next spawn.
What is the fun in that? If i want to wait, i go to the DMV.

i am glad no developer is listening to this dude and goes the instance way. if you want to go take a number and line up, be my guess. Just don't count me in.

I have come to prefer instanced dungeons, all the popular open dungeons was just to easy leapfrogging with other groups to get to the end, with instancing its you and yer group against all the mobs on the way, no leapfrogging and taking turns killing shit, that imo was way easier.
Can maybe anyone with 1st hand expirience say something about AION dungeons?
Just thought about it while browsing through thier site here.

Well, we can go back and forth, but I never saw dungeons totally dominated by the players, such that there were no spawns up. What I saw was generally a few high level folks camping the best stuff, then lower level folks just trying to grind experience and stay alive.
The "staying alive" was what kept things fresh and kept folks on their toes. Now, I sometimes go tired of grinding exp in a dungeon camp spot, but I never got bored. Was too scared of dying to get bored.
I suppose the best EQ dungeon experiences were when maybe there were only one to three groups in the dungeon only to be fair. I don't think instanced dungeons necessarily are a better design- in fact, really they are different appeals. WoW actually, contrary to opinion, has non-instanced dungeons and sometimes having random other people in the dungeon can make it more dynamic, more interesting. In fact, I'd like to see a mmo try a instanced dungeon that allows multiple groups to join and do their own thing. This way you don't just have the monotony/sameness/predictably of a 5-man instance, but you have maybe more of the presence of the 'mmo' aspect that vanishes as soon as the dungeon is restricted to that of a 5-man multiplayer game.
I believe that EQ dungeons were the best designed. They had all kinds of traps, twisty windy passeges, secret doors, and all kinds of neat things. They were probably the best part of the game as they really were dangerous to go into.
My best dungeon experience is unfortunatley in the game Neverwinter nights, it isn't really a MMO with 64 players max but the dungeoning was really fun.
Most fun dungeons in a MMO I played is EQ2, particulary Runny eye seems to have stucked in my memory...
All this talk about EQ Classic brings a tear to my eye
Unrest was probably my favorite, LDoN was possibly the perfect method for getting strangers to team up for a crawl. So much fun back when I could get a group together without waiting for hours...
The Dead Mines because the whole build up to it and ending was just perfect and the best time I ever had in WoW and Westfall was such a great fun zone.
My favourite dungeon runs included World of Warcraft Old 40 man 5hour Molten Core runs..
Molten Core? The most linear, boring, and tank-n-spank instance in existence? Seriously? That instance should just be deleted for all the human hours that were wasted on it to farm gear so people could get past Vael in BWL.
i've been playing mmo's for the past 10 years, Molten Core may have been boring for u, but I thought it was fun..spend hours trying to accomplish something no other guild had done in the world. Kill Ragnaros..I'm not talking about doing it every week, for many months, i'm talking about the first whole clear. The sense of accomplishment everyone felt when killing the final boss. Even the anger that rose in everyone when Ragnaros would bug out at 1% with everyone alive and GM's saying they can't do anything about it. Those were memorable times. Not everyone played past Molten Core, ergo not everyone needed to grind for gear, ergo many people found it fun. Now tell me this, why are people still running Molten Core in Wrath of the Lich King? Because some people find it fun.
I would have to say the first few times through DDO dungeons were great. There's something to be said when you NEED a rogue to make it through(well at release it seemed this way lol).
I've had some really good times in GW's also but there is just something about the way DDO plays that puts it over the top for me.
Quite a few of the DDO dungeons is nothing short of spectacular, especially on the first run.
In terms of play value I do not think any MMO has this beaten yet.
But my all time favourite is Steps of Madness in Anarchy Online.
To this day I can not hear a bicycle bell "pling" without thinking of it.
It was not all that pretty, it was pretty straight forward but DAMN, the mood, ambience and above all the music makes it, for me, the best dungeon experience to date.
But a worthy mention to EQ2 and Soluseks Eye, first time in there with its HUGE grottos, equally huge everything and the glass walkways were giants just waited for you, that was something else as well.
Not to mention Nagafen at the end.
Do not think it is played all that much these days except for people wanting the dragon language and are doing "To speak as a dragon".
Perhaps they added another way to get that now?
But still, quest chains like that is why I think EQ2 is the king of quests.

most fun ive had is killing kronus in Vanguard to complete the epic weapon quest line for some guildies.
hands down,
Zul'Farrak in wow.. the battle on the steps of the temple..... truly truly epic.
Also loved Onyxia the first time.. and Zul'Gurub every time.
VC aka The Deadmines was the first dungeon that ever made my jaw drop... when I walked through that door and saw the Dreadnought in there... wow.
